The other day I returned from a fairly long visit to Poland. To my great surprise (and maybe yours) my first picture is a kind of postcard. I rarely show this kind of photos and I had not expected to post anything from this occasion, but seeing this I rather liked the light and colours, despite the dark clouds.
Furthermore, I took this picture in the company of legendary TE member Malgo (emka), whom I met for the first time after "knowing" her for years on this site.
After meeting at the Old town square in Warsaw we immediately climbed a tower to a viewing platform at the edge of the Old town, Stare Miasto. This is a view facing south, towards the city centre. In the distance you can see the well known Soviet built Palace of Culture, from the 1950's, and a short distance to the right the recently opened residential tower called The Sail (the slightly uneven light blue building), designed by Polish-born American architect Daniel Libeskind. Malgo has posted a much better photo of that particular skyscraper.
In a workshop you can get another glimpse of these two landmarks from a different direction, taken on a much sunnier day several weeks earlier.
Here is a larger version.

Glad to see your new report from Poland. This is very familiar view and this photo brings me back to that tower to Malgo again. ;) Yes, we had have the clear blue sky but I like this graphic of the stormy clouds.
Thanks for memories!
rigoletto (34279) 2014-06-17 6:38
hi gert. you know, this is more than a postcard, an important and rare photo, not for the history of mankind maybe, but for the history of TE: two restless globetrotters have finally met in a "blind date". this is almost as rare an event as the collision of two individual nitrogen atoms in a vacuum chamber :)
nice colors under gloomy sky. i was sorry for you, how you had to cope with lots of rain, compared to malgo enjoying late spring sun in the rest of europe :)
craig&tosca were also unlucky with the istanbul forecast, but it was finally nice after 3 rainy days.

Fine panorama from the center of the city. I like the contrast created by the dark clouds. Well taken.

Hi Gert, welcome back from Poland and from the meeting with our special private guide...ehehe..in effect isn't usual to watch a postcard in your gallery, but as you know i like a lot this kind of pics, and the view is truly beautiful and strange under these dark clouds,an excellent capture made in the best quality as the workshop too.Have a nice evening and thanks,Luciano
danos (96760) 2014-06-17 8:11
nice the panoramic view of this section of the place with the dark clouds ove the old and new buildings of the town.I like the excellent view of this row of the old and beautiful buildings of the foegond as the excellent light and colour management of the image.
nikkitta (17066) 2014-06-17 8:19
Not a portrait but lots of people at the busy street below
Like the panoramic because of the contrasting architecture, traditional and very modern at the back all under a good storming sky
Nice place to meet TE members
Good to have you back, greetings
SnapRJW (31629) 2014-06-17 8:27
Nice to see you back Gert and with a shot 'hot off the press'. What makes this more than a postcard are the people. Your composition, taken from a high vantage point actually made me think of two painters who used similar viewpoints Pieter Bruegel and LS Lowry, they too populated their paintings with figures.
I like the overcast mood here and despite the gloom you have some attractive colours and contrasts.

ourania (44318) 2014-06-17 9:26
you took this picture from a privileged and fascinating vantage point, your composition is very well structured, the street, cityscape and sky are well balanced and of equal importance. I like very much the sweeping depth and the clear details, the reassuring warmth of the buildings' colours that counterbalances the stormy greys. I enjoy very much observing the tiny people, they are so cute and it feels like they are moving and we can follow their routes with our eyes and imagination. A great point of view to share with Malgo. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,

uno splendido panorama da un pov d'eccezione.
Bella la città e bello vedere tutte le persone a passeggio, quasi tutte in coppia.
Con Malgo hai sicuramente avuto una guida d'eccezione.
cornejo (41377) 2014-06-17 10:28
Hello Gert, very good picture of this beautiful composition with these charming facades of this interesting city, very well captured in this beautiful and interesting picture, with good sharpness, nice light, color and quality. Excellent and interesting job well done, congratulations my friend. Thanks for sharing this beautiful work.
Good afternoon and happy week.
Warm greetings from southern Spain.
kasianowak (8743) 2014-06-17 10:31
I know which tower you took this image from. :-) I'll be looking at some of those tall buildings, from a different POV and only for a few hours, next week.
This is an unusual upload for you indeed! :-) But I like this eclectic collection of architecture from very old houses, through soviet-inspired to very modern. As you say, the colours look very nice in the overcast light.
Looking forward to seeing more
PaulVDV (28237) 2014-06-17 12:13
A kind of postcard, you say. I remember that tower with the viewing platform. The typical postcards are the views of the other side, I think.
Here you show us a view of different architectural styles, the heritage of different historical eras in the Polish capital.
I like the contrast between the bluish sky, the red roofs and the softly toned facades of the houses on the foreground.
The people add life to the picture while the atmosphere isn't certainly hectic here.
You travelled for quite some time through Poland, you must have visited a lot.
Best regards, Paul
PiotrF (16854) 2014-06-17 12:15
Welcome in Poland.I know this view:)
Well captured and framed shot of a good perspective.Excellent quality, some good details.Nice composition. Colors, contrast are excellent.

Wow, You visited Warsaw!
Good frame and interesting colors.
emka (95203) 2014-06-17 13:11
Hi Gert, I am very surprised with this photo, I wouldn't expect it from you as the beginning of the Polish gallery. I am amazed with the quality after I saw your tiny camera. Why I carry big lens when it is possible to make such excellent shot with a camera taken from small pocket? The colours in this gloomy rainy day are fantastic, I like the contrast of snow white walls and red roofs.
Excellent sharpness and funny view of the people down there. The traffic there is limited, so good for walking and photos. Haha, I am glad I showed you something you hadn't seen before. You can compare this photo of your with mine taken from the same POV but in such different circumstances.
Looking forward to seeing next shots
legendary (hahaha) Malgo

That city looks very interesting and attractive!
Today, specially here on TE, I've got to know it better, but before I didn't have any idea about it! It's always a good surprise!
I also like this beautiful picture you took!
Special regards to the colors, management of light, chosen pov and composition!
TFS - congrats,

Interesantan tekst o gradu i sastanku, lep pogled na deo grada ...
Dobar trenutak snimka, kontrast i perspektiva, lepo pokazana arhitektura i trenutak sa oblacima koji donose kisu, lepe boje.
Prijatno vece i lepa noc, sve najbolje.
An interesting article about the town and meeting a nice view of part of the city ...
Good time recording, contrast and perspective, beautiful architecture and shown the moment the clouds that bring rain, beautiful colors.
Have a nice evening and night, all the best.
tyro (24362) 2014-06-18 1:13
This is quite a departure for you - a very recently taken photograph - but nonetheless a very fine one too. I love the diagonal composition, the near roadway and the facades of the old buildings leading the eye toward the distant more modern structures beneath a wonderfully interesting sky. The light is delightful and soft, the colours vibrant yet true and the details and sharpness are exquisite, especially when viewed at full size on "beta" TE.
But, more importantly, how nice that you have, after all these years, eventually met up with Malgo. Having met her once three years ago, she is a delightful and also most interesting person and I am sure she was a very helpful and knowledgeable guide to you in Warsaw - at least if you could keep up with her! I'll bet you had sore feet by the end of the day.

Hello Gert. Now So you're in Poland on the go. I'm really looking forward to the many impressive photos. A photo of Warsaw is a good start. And that you could meet Malgo is great. By means of your photos so I will get to know the city and the country. Although I was already in Poland, but not in Warsaw.
Best rgds, Wolfgang.
macjake (67038) 2014-06-18 4:24
Oh i remember this place very well, and I know exactly where you took this photo from because I did the same.
We visited that coffee house a few times on the bottom right as well :)
Although Malgo doesn't enjoy the new modern buildings that we see in the bg, I love them. Its nice to see the contrast between the new and the old styles in one setting - dont' you think?
and hey...if I can post people photos there's no reason why you can't post city photos :)
a fine start to Warsaw, whats next?
jhm (151446) 2014-06-18 5:18
When I not saw the car, and black and white picture, would I think 70 years ago during the WAR II.
Your picture is very nice taken
Your picture is made in high quality with nice pleasant colours.
Excellent perspective and depth, nice choice of your angle.
Composition and presentation be superb.
Very well done, TFS.
abmdsudi (53047) 2014-06-18 11:17
This is the Old Town Square whilst "old" it is in fact relatively "new" from this viewpoint and I am taken by the lovely mix of pastel colours in this which marries so beautiful to the dark sky. Indeed a lively place and i like the way you have framed the shot where the strong diagonal lines really gives the feel of depth to the image and always there's an advantage taking from high viewpoint as the overall view of the skyline further adds lot of interest and beauty around. The composure is spot on and i think you achieve what you set out, Congrats, TFS
COSTANTINO (64198) 2014-06-18 11:55

What a great postcard from Warsaw! I like the scene a lot due to the superb combination of old and new architecture. I must say that the view looks quite impressive from your selected POV:)
Very well seen and taken. TFS!

Hello dear Gert,
Nice to see you again here with this wonderfull capture from Warsaw.
Very good pov and layout and a nice message how our cities pendles between traditional and modern architecture.
TFS and best regards
Tigerlily (3379) 2014-06-18 13:35
Nice to see you are back, and glad to learn that you met Malgo....
I really like this shot. The ink painted blue and grey-ish sky made a beautiful color contrast, the little colourful people made the street full of life. Wonderful clarity and POV. I love the colours... beautiful intensive colours.
A very good evening to you. Give us a call if you come to England, we have a lot of rain here..:-D
jcpix (13914) 2014-06-18 19:20
You snuck up on me, I hadn't even realized your return until now!? Guess I should be paying closer attention. :) Great to have you back, and I can only assume you had a pleasurable meeting with Malgo...I can't believe it took that long for two world travelers to finally get together. Sure looks like you made good use of your time, this is a fine view over the city, and one which carries a lot of dynamic element from the heavy clouds. This may not be your favorite type of image, but look....there's still plenty of people just as well. :) Welcome back, looking forward to following your adventure through the lens. Take care.
rychem (34567) 2014-06-18 21:14

Det är en klyftigt titel som genljuder med en del av Polens historia.
Färgerna står ut bra mot den mörka himlen. Du kan inte undvika att inkludera människor i dina bilder, även om de är som myror.
claudeD (38122) 2014-06-19 4:24
very fine view from Warsaw showing much architectural details and you are right dark angry clouds in the sky. A picture full of atmosphere very well composed.TFS.
With regards from Luxembourg
Kamilutka (8105) 2014-06-19 4:53
so recently you visited Poland! Shame the weather wasn't very good but I still like this picture. The high POV offered really nice view and quite wide perspective and from the distance all the pedestrians look tiny and do not disturb the composition but actually add some interest. I enjoy the contrast between the red roofed houses in the foreground which are more in traditional style and the blueish, steel like buildings in the background which are the more modern part of Warsaw.
Hope you had good time there! All the best
jemaflor (96037) 2014-06-19 9:27
Good pov on the roof, interesting angle, interesting contrast of architecture.
imageme (1790) 2014-06-19 13:39
Hi Gert, Excellent POV which shows what is happening in the street at the moment. The line of buildings on the right side along with the length of the road give sense of depth to the composition. Excellent details and clarity even the dark clouds does not seem helping you. Nice view of part of city in Warsaw. Best regards
eldancer1 (36343) 2014-06-19 15:06
It doesn't look like even the dark clouds is scaring the people from taking a walk. Nice capture of those beautiful buildings, I assume they are apartments with stores and restaurants on the ground floors? Good lighting in spite of the cloudy day and nice details. Well done, tfs.
Gigidusud (20825) 2014-06-19 23:28
Nice TE meeting also!
Merci pour le partage.
Kielia (24077) 2014-06-20 7:57
this was really a difficult task! The result is a symphony of red roofs and a fantastic impression of Malgo’s town almost from the bird’s eye perspective. I also love the cloudy sky. TFS!
Glint (6171) 2014-06-22 10:28
I can see very easily why you would choose to post this. I love the dark sky, it looks to have been painted. It sets off the terracotta colour of the roof tiles so well. An interesting skyline to. Compositionally the triangular shaped street scene works well. I like how the figures are dotted about and have a slightly Lowryesque quality.
Silvio1953 (140815) 2014-06-22 11:48
Ciao Gert, great POV on fantastic city, beautiful parade of lovely facades, excellent perspective,, superb sky, wonderful colors and splendid sharpness, very well done, my friend, ciao Silvio

Excellent presentation of the Warsaw skyline.Very well captured with dark clouds hovering. Thanks for sharing this beautiful work. Keep sharing.TFS.
mjw364 (842) 2014-06-25 6:47
It is as you say the vibrant colours and the light of the sky that make this image stand out from the usual postcards. I like the strong contrast between the red roofs and the blue-white buildings and sky in the background.
chrislo (4155) 2014-07-01 14:33
Splendid viewpoint over the row of old tenement houses and the modern buildings at the rear for a striking architectural contrast. Even though the weather wasn't great, the dark cloudy sky helped to add a dramtic feel to the shot. The people strolling along create a nice lively atmosphere, and the subdued light and colours make this a very attractive image. Very well framed and composed.
adores (45029) 2014-07-14 14:57
Great to see you met Malgo:)! Hope you had a great meeting!
I'm glad you posted this photo. The pov is just great - I like the older houses in front and the modern city in background and the sky is fabulous, you got a good shot even with a cloudy sky.
omid266 (6735) 2014-07-14 21:45

Great view over the roofs of Warsaw. A nice row of traditional architecture in front of the more modern city in the background. A good composition and some nice dark clouds to top it all off.
swapankumarroy (2847) 2014-10-18 10:48
An excellent aerial view of Warsaw under the dark cloudy sky for which dark red colored roof was very much contrast, nicely shot it with well color contrast and great sharpness, I like your good camera control.
ikeharel (69827) 2016-02-01 7:30
Good afternoon Gert,
Warsaw reminds me of Paris archi.-style, especially the building block in the closer range of your photo. The high point photo show well the red roof-tiles skyline.
Excellent combination with the modern edifices on the far side, in fine contrast.
