'Syrenka' (the mermaid depicted here), is the protector and defender of the city of Warsaw. She is poised to strike in the old town market square, which was extensively rebuilt after its almost complete destruction in 1945. From mermaidsofearth.com: 'This mermaid statue was made in bronze by Konstanty Hegel in 1855. The above statue is a zinc cast from the original, placed in Warsaw’s Old Town Market square. The square is one of the city’s top tourist attractions. There are many representations of the Syrenka throughout the city, including another mermaid statue near the River Vistula.
There are different stories of how the mermaid came to be the city’s protector.
One story has it that the Syrenka, whose name actually is Melusina, is the sister of the famous mermaid in Copenhagen. One of the sisters swam up to the Danish straits and stayed there. The other sister swam to Poland and up the Vistula River, right to where the Old Town Market is today. She liked it and stayed and was popular with the people there for her singing.
When she was caught and held prisoner by a man wanting to profit by her, she was freed by the local people. In gratitude she promised to protect the people if they were ever in danger.
Tracing the history of the city’s coat of arms, it started out in the late 14th century as a dragon with a male human head, holding a shield and a sword. The head and upper body were later replaced with those of a woman, with the dragon tail remaining. Eventually in the 16th century the dragon tail was replaced with a mermaid’s tail. In this statue, the Syrenka is a two-tailed mermaid, with a tail on each “leg”.'

An interesting commentary to accompany this well constructed composition. The colourful façades contrast nicely with the bronze tones of the statue. The image is pleasantly illuminated and has very good colours and clarity.

le belle facciate colorate sono uno sfondo splendido per questa statua che caratterizza la piazza del centro storico di Varsavia.
Malgo (emka) ne sarà felice.
Bello scatto, un pov originale.

The buildings are framing well the sculpture. The point of view is showing the details, the colors of the sculpture and of the buildings. The good luminosity is bringing out the colors. Have a nice day.

Great tight composition drawing attention to Syrenka with the colourful facades in the background.
Interesting note - I didn't know the origins of Warsaw's coat of arms. How did a male dragon become a female mermaid I wonder. ;-)

Good evening Chris,
Nicely combined the FG Mermaid stsue against the town houses in diff. colors.
Archi.design show houses in the same pattern, but one has more statues atop on the roof-balcony.
Contrast and clarity well collected in the upwards view.
Enjoy a nice weekend,

Hi, I know this view very well :)). Original composition with Syrenka filling the frame and the tenement houses of the Old Town Square only the background. Superb colours and sharpness. And what a guide I am - I didn't know this story about two mermaids :(.

I love to know about the stories of ancient times which usually include all sorts of mythical beasts and figures.
Your photograph is very well composed and uses a shallow dof to good effect.
Have a great day,

I always wonder why this local heroes are naked when the are upgraded to a statue. Anyway, they are always a nice element in this kind of interesting pictures and the have a story which is worth telling about.

love this mermaid, i remember her well and i have several photo of her too.
really enjoy the various colors of the building in the bg, and i have to say...i'd be eager to step inside those buildings to see how they look. and are they personal homes? are they businesses? are they 1 story appartments or 2/3 story appartments...how do those tenement homes work?
sweet shot, nicely placed in the 1/3 area.

This is a nicely composed shot of the mermaid. The off center placement of the statue works well allowing us to see the colorful buildings in the background. The lighting is nice as is the color and sharpness.

lovely hearing from you again! This is a very attractive picture and your composition is well arranged. The mermaid is well integrated to the characteristic scenery of the city where she belongs and at the same time we can see her face clearly as it stands out against the sky. Dynamism and balance are great, the colours are lovely. There's an effective graphic quality. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,
