City of Płock. The former Benedictine Abbey and the relics of the castle (left) and Cathedral Basilica (right). The Benedictine Abbey was built before 1172. The beginnings of Płock Castle go back to the XIII century. In the XIV century the complete castle grounds were surrounded with a second defensive ring. In the course of the following yers, a section of the complex of buidings slid off into the Vistula river and the remainder were pulled down. The preserved ruins of Płock Castle, which are still standing, are the Noble Tower and the Clock Tower as well as the western side of the abbey. Cathedral Basilica in the city of Plock dedicated to the Assummption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Bazylika katedralna pod wezwaniem Wniebowzięcia NMP). Original Romanesque the basilica was erected on the initiative of Bishop Alexander of Malonne, consecrated in 1144. In the XIV century two additional towers were built.
