This is a photo of the main gate at the former Nazi Concentration camp at Auschwitz in Southern Poland (Polish name - Oswiecim). I guess most people know the history of the site, but for those that don't, further information can be seen at the museum's official site here.
This gate can be found inside the Auschwitz-I compound, and the German writing on the sign translates cynically as "Work brings Freedom". The starving & exhausted prisoners would pass under this gate on their way back to the acommodation blocks after a hard days work, often carrying with them the bodies of fellow prisoners who had died during the day. A small orchestra would also play (situated behind the tree on the right) to encourage the prisoners to march faster.
The photograph was taken in November 2005 amid quite heavy snow showers. The original was in colour, but the weather conditions made it look almost B&W, so i converted it to grayscale which I believe added to the sense of atmosphere. I also increased the contrast. The original colour post is attached as a workshop for comparison.
Please feel free to critique this photo, and let me kow if you think it is better than the original colour version.
Please see my future gallery posts for more photos of the site.

It's a very good shot of this very famous gateway Dave, though there's something about the snow covering that makes it look almost like an atractive scene. Very disconcerting.

Very nice shot of those wellknown gates. It's almost like you stopped the time with this photo. And the snow and clod weather makes a good effect. regards Tommy

Very nice, the choice of black and white I think fits perfectly to create the atmosphere.

The Lies of all Lies.
The most synical of all synism
The Icon for everything that we don't stand for
And still we have to show it again and again and again...
