The Iconic St. Mary's Basilica in Krakow. Again, a subject thats been photographed a million times, but when traveling here, its a must to capture it for yourself.
On a side note, I've mentioned before in my recent uploads that one of my favorite things to do during our vacation was climbing up these tall churches to the tower at the very top. So of course we did that here in Krakow too. In all of the 10 cities we visited, the view from this St. Mary's Basilica was my least favorite.
I was pretty cranky when i reached the top :) I was so disappointed with the view I hardly even took any photo's and wanted to go back down almost immediately. Looking back, I wonder why I was so upset? lol
And its no coincedence that I took the least amount of photo's in Krakow than in any of the other cities. Maybe I was having a few bad days or something, who knows. I suppose it didn't meet my great expectations.
But I loved the view from the street I got here :)

Hello Craig, you have used the super wide lens to really good effect,it most have taken ages waiting for the pigeons to arrange themselves into this lovely pattern..
The lines of the square lead so well to the soaring Basilica,it`s a great shot imaginatively created and well captured.

An out of the ordinary image making excellent us of the wide angle lens. Don't mind the distortion here, it contributes to the success of the shot rather than detracts. The pigeons make a great set of lead-lines toward the Basilica. Superb realisation.

Wow! This is a fantastic presentation of this beautiful symbol of Kraków! Love the way you composed the church with a great foreground full of walking pigeons. Very well done. Thanks for sharing!

amazing DOF in this striking composition. The Sigma lens comes into its own in shots like this. It is a great POV and I wonder whether you were lying on the ground to get it. Superb clarity and detail with captivating light. Excellent!
Have a good week - Brian.

excellent use of the wide angle for a nice compo that includes the pigeons
Have a nice day, cheers

Yes, at least from the street level you took a very attractive picture of that basilica! I like it a lot!
Sharpness, exposure, colors, vertical format, slim black borders and, above all, chosen pov and composition are all excellent!
TFS - congrats,
Sergiom (79601) 2012-10-15 5:54

excellent composition you captured.foreground chose skilful and with this splendid basilica exist amazing landscape.
bertolucci (13362) 2012-10-15 8:23
Ah, in a way a visual revenge on that giant but 'disappointing' church, letting those pigeons take centre stage ;-) And your super white angle lens worked wonders doing that (darned, I have to get one too!) . I really dig the jaunty rhythm of the pigeons and people here too. A great and very smart job!
Have a fine start of the week
Best regards from Rotterdam,
Cricri (119457) 2012-10-15 8:27

indeed,it was photographed a million times, but you were able thanks to your wide-angle lens and your imagination to bring out something unique of this scene.I really enjoy this perspective and vertical format you used here, which emphasis more the foreground of the Basilica with its unique cobblestone pavement, but also the pigeons, without which it is difficult to imagine Krakow Old Town.
Have a nice day

The long foreground bring a very good depth into the picture. It enhances the height of the church tower as well. An interesting picture with an interesting note!

i think great expectations is an interesting title, reminding me of the Dickens novel.
Also from the wid angle view i can understand your great expectations. The doves in the foreground really look attractive. TFS, best regards, F.

Just four days ago, I wrote a critique on this picture which must have been taken from almost exactly the same viewpoint as yours though I suspect you might have been a bit closer with your wide "city" lens.
And your "city" lens has certainly come up trumps here with very strong perspective which not only draws us strongly into the picture but also accentuates the differing heights of the two towers of the church. I see that you also packed a loaf of bread in your camera bag to attract the pigeons!
A beautiful photograph with lovely colours (I especially like the green ?statue above the doorway of the church), perfect lighting and exposure and stunning sharpness. The pigeons certainly add a lot of foreground interest and we can see amazing detail in all the tiny figures milling around the square.

Interesting that Krakow didn't live up, Craig - I've never been, but it has always been held up for me as the jewel of Polish cities. At least you got this beauty out of the trip - You've played with the perspective really nicely with a wide open view, and the presence of pigeons and people leading all the way up to the Cathedral itself really enhances the awesome sense of scale. The vanishing lines formed elsewhere - the buildings, the brickwork on the ground - all lead the eye really nicely. Very well composed shot.

Gidday Cranky Craig
Well I hope you calmed down once you climbed down and got this stunner. That wide-angle lens of yours has worked a treat here, to deliver one of the most original POVs I've seen of this fabulous church. Were you tripodding or just sitting on your b*m for this? Anyway, I love the huge, bokeh'd foreground and am absolutely stunned that you still managed to get a great sharpness for the church, using only f/6.3. And good work with the light here, not an easy one I see.
Cheers and happy day

AWESOME SHOT!!!!! what a magnificent composition of this of this beautiful church in Krakow. This wide lens you used Craig, you done wonderfully with a lot of pigeons in the FG. The effect is striking beautiful. Thanks for sharing. Love it.
All the best,
jjcordier (79297) 2012-10-15 22:17

The wide open spaces and numerous pigeons.
Art and filmography.
Architecture and fine and noble fantasy of living birds of Hitchcock.

Hi Craig, I do not know why you were so disappointed? Iwas on this tower during the TE meeting in Krakow and it was such a fun. beautiful view of the square.
I returned yesterday from South Africa trip. It was fantastic adventure. I am full of great memories (and a few SD cards are also full :)). I will post some of them soon.
Royaldevon (38814) 2012-10-16 3:15
Who knows what causes such disappointment; it could have been the high expectations, that this would be even better than other places you had visited, it could have been the light, it could have been that you couldn't get the type of angle you prefer. Whatever, this is a good shot across the square. The many pigeons, which appear to be moving, act like a guide towards the very imposing, majestic building. You have a good dof and good balance.
Have a lovely day,
dkmurphys (58654) 2012-10-16 3:58
Lovely POV. The distortion works perfectly here, great catch!
Have a nice day.

With its vertical probably corrected the basilica soars skyward dramatically. A beautiful photo with nice visitors and pigeons. Excellent sharpness and depth. Bravo.
Have a nice day

Hello Craig. The angle of view with the pigeons in the foreground is well chosen. The church is really very high, as you can see on the houses. Well done. Not to be missed.
Silvio1953 (143106) 2012-10-18 5:59
Ciao Craig, great POV on fantastic architecture, lovely composition with a lot of pigeons, wonderful colors, excellent perspective and splendid light, very well done, my friend, ciao Silvio
Tigerlily (3379) 2012-10-18 7:59
Superb POV, I really love the foreground.. the lines lead to the main building.. I like the pigeons there, added on more interests. Personally, I would give a little space on the top... great shot, anyway. I like it.
SWEETFREEDOM (24621) 2012-10-19 11:39
i like the low p.o.v. you have chosen, it enanches the effect of the wide angle you used. nice cathedral and houses facades in the bg.

Ola Craig ,
Waylim (25502) 2012-10-22 10:48
Very cool shot, I love the perspective here, with the wide angle lens and low POV.
Well certain monument has been well photographed and presented, but we have to make our own represenation. I find this very cool with the foreground of pigeons and all te line leading in toward the church tower that reach up to the sky.
mumek (20202) 2012-10-23 10:32
Very beautiful capture of the Basilica taken from Main Square. Nicely taken scenery with famous residents of the square - pigeons in the foreground. Thanks for sharing
kiks (12555) 2012-10-25 3:02
Hi Craig, i realy like the perspective you create here with the low pov and teh choice of lens. Lovely composition with good light.
kordinator (20519) 2012-10-26 2:40
Nicely captured the Iconic St. Mary's Basilica in Krakow.
Amazing architecture and lovely pigeons on the square.
The composition is flawless a quality is undeniable.
CLODO (34196) 2012-10-26 2:55
You played well with this the ultra wide angle to have a vertical reading of the image, starting from the pigeons and pavement pattern and to finishing on the church tower. I am sure you post processed this shot in order to have the tower vertical.
I have been in this city 15 years ago and get a good souvenir of this place.
serp2000 (44191) 2012-10-29 9:03
Original and creative view, I like this presentation of Krakow. Good idea, I'd like to visit this place too. May be next time. A quality is great! TFS!
Thanks a lot for your friendly comment!
jmdias (64410) 2012-11-01 6:53
this church is even very photographed, anyway I liked this pov catching the ground full of doves, what makes the compo so beautiful and different of the usual.
In Italy most of tourist love to climb the famous towers and domes but I avoid that because the crowds. anyway I climbed the tower of pisa (because the line was short in that moment) and in san gimignano.
Robert1969 (7160) 2012-11-04 0:34
The Sigma 8-16mm lens and the vertical position
creates a very nice depth in the picture.
The Pigeons emphasizes the depth extra (the
eyes of the viewer will follow them and that
ends by the Church).
Composition and light management are as always
jcpix (13930) 2013-01-27 17:30
I almost feel as if I'm falling into the image...and I like it, another fantastic perspective! This converging viewpoint is really fascinating and has created some fantastic lines in basically every direction. The pigeons dotting the square have that feel of St. Marcos in Venice. Very neat and eye-catching shot, thanks for sharing.
fotka (4405) 2013-06-25 4:43
I like this shot very much, why because you show here main square in Cracow from pigeons point of view. It was an excellent idea to show the 14th century St. Mary's Church this way. The photo has great perspective, colors, light and sharpness.
I am glad that you had good time in my city.
