Photographer’s Note

The name Calvary (polish- Kalwaria) often refers to sculptures or pictures representing the scene of the crucifixion of Jesus, or a small wayside shrine incorporating such a picture. It also can be used to describe larger, more monument-like constructions, essentially artificial hills often built by devotees.

Kalwaria Zebrzydowska it is the best known sanctuary in Poland, after Jasna Gora in Częstochowa. The Mannerist architectural and park landscape complex and pilgrimage park in Kalwaria Zebrzydowska were entered in 1999 onto the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.
