[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is another shot of a veteran aircraft. The Catalina has great history here at Sola airport. It has been used as a search and rescue plane, and to scout for submarines during WWII. This aircraft could escort convoys for great distances, and the crew could during a single mission stay in the air for over 20 hours. At the altitude this aircraft would fly the temperature would quickly drop to 20 below and it would be hard for the crew to keep warm.

The Catalina is a "flying ship" and what is called an amphibious aircraft. Flying ship indicates it being able to land and rescue people or other tasks in the middle of the ocean, and the amphibious indicates that the aircraft can land on land and on water.

This aircraft type can bee seen in the last scene of the film U571.

This is a great piece of history, and I would like to thank all people who keep these veteran aircraft flying.

Hello, very nice b/w and very interesting note. Thank you!

Unfortunatly a bit cropped, but otherwise a nice view of this PBY. this flying boat hs had a long and rich history, starting flying before WWII (in the mid 30's), taking a very active part in the war (Midway, the hunt of the Bismark, reco, antisubmarine warfare and S&R, even antishipping in the Pacific...) and finished its life many years afterwards whith more peacefull tasks(forest firefighting, for example) and some are still flying nowadays.

All the best,

Emmanuel

Hei igjen Halgeir

Now this is a true portrait of a warbird.
The photo looks good, but it is a little bit tightly cropped.
None the less it looks great.
TFS.

Perfect bw work Hallgeir. I guess no better way to present the old lady. Interesting details of the plane, bit difficult light but still a fine overall result.

Beautiful old and glorious airplane, you use again the B&W and I find that this choice is still good to appreciate, like an old movie, these beauties, compliments.
Ciao

Hello Halgeir,
A fine old specimen is captured with good details!
The black and white works well here, as it gives an atmosphere of wartime days...
Well framed, sharp fine details!
Greetings,

:-) OK-

Hi Halgeir,
Flying ships have special form, they are beautiful on their own way. It would be great to see one landing or taking off from the water some day. B&W was a good choice, both for the historic reason and also because of strong midday light that probably left colours flat anyway.
