[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Flåm (pronounced "Flawm") is situated in the innermost part of the Aurlandsfjord, a tributary of the 204 kilometers long and up to 1308 meters deep Sognefjord. Sognefjord is the longest and deepest fjord in the world, and have been a highlight and main attraction for cruise tourists along the Norwegian coast.

Flåm is surrounded by steep mountainsides, roaring waterfalls and deep valleys. The train ride from Myrdal to Flam is one of the most spectacular train rides I have ever experienced. The train will make a short pause for you to admire & photograph a breathtaking view of a waterfall before it continues the steep descent down to Flåm which is the end of railway line from Myrdal.

Fjord arms cutting through the landscape are a common sight along the Norwegian coast. After the last ice age, the wild and beautiful scenery of Western Norway was formed by water melting from glaciers, and rivers that carved their way through rock from the earliest period of the earth's history. When the ice receded, the landscape was completely transformed into high mountains, narrow valleys, and deep fjords.

Photo was taken in the autumn of 1987. There appear to be a cluster of timber buildings at the foot of the mountain on the left & no wooden bridge on new photos I have seen on TE & elsewhere. Click here (by another photographer) to see the changes. You can see a tiny tourist bus right next to a giant ship & some buildings as I have mentioned.

Photo scanned from two negatives - stitched & adjusted in PS CS2. Never imagined I would be able to stitch two photos together - thanks to the digital world it's now possible at no great cost. The first shot was from a higher angle without the foreground boat in. The second was from a lower angle with the boat included but the background boat was slightly cut off on the left side. I have more view to the right with the merged photo but I had that cropped out.

Impressive colours are maintained for twenty years, and the post work is very well done...
A great composition with a wonderful feeling of depth, and the fjord had fine reflective qualities that day in 1987!

Dear Latiff
Simple composition with all the lights and shadows in your favor. It made me realized, the weather can influenced and shaped so much the landscape. It is amazing how breathtaking the landscape of the temperate world.

Hi Latiff,

A vast powerful place .. and yet such a tranquil scene. I love the tone and the wonderful reflection .. again the sky bothers me a bit both in tone and the "halo" effect I feel at the edge of the mountains .. still a tremendous image.

thanks for sharing it.

take care,

John

Hi Latiff,
Well chosen POV, fantastic light. The white boat is a stand-out. The picture has aged gracefully, excellent PP work to bring it back to its pristine glory.

George

Andrea

Hi Latiff,
Beautiful tones on the background mountains and their reflections. The place is great.
And the stitchwork is faultless, I can't see any evidence of it.
Kari

Nice take, very quiet! The colors are interesting especially around the mountains

Your gallery is amazing. You have been to some very nice places and taken great pictures. I really like this one. TFS.

Hello Latiff,

What a placid, ethereal site. The composition and perspectiv, light and shadows, colors and definition are all first rate.

I've been to Flåm a couple of times, and my most memorable moment came from a diametrically opposite atmospheres from yours, Maiden of the Falls. Did you get a chance to visit those remarkable falls. Pease, don't worry about critiquing the photo, just compare what is opposite yours in a mood in the majestic land.

Warm regards,
Bulent

Latiff,
This is a very nice shot of the harbor of Flam. You have done a nice job converting these older photo to the digital format. The lighting and colors are great with nice sharpness and detail. The scene from this photo is far different from the shots I took of this same spot last summer. Here is a shot that I took in June of 2006.

A very nice fjord view ans a impressive stiching work (which I discovered after reading your note) for these scanned pictures. I found here again the very calm sea surface of the fjords, completly protected by the surrounding mountains. Nice natural colors, not much light on the sides but a good effect in the foreground which lightens the image.

All the best,

Emmanuel

Great composition with nice colors.
I love the sharpness of the reflection of the small boat.
Well done!

I like this atmosphere of serenity, calmness.
Very good to have included the boat in the foreground.
Cheers

Hi Latiff, what i like mostly here is the sense of serenity...a good sense of peace from this image...
Good capture and light management!
well done!
ciao!

Hello Latiff,
beautiful panorama!! The foreground is fantastic with the boat, the deep dark colors and the reflections. However, the background, which is beautiful, has not been worked as beautifully as the foreground. A lot of dodging or burning is visible around the hills, which is a bit annoying...But it's an old picture and I understand the difficulty of bringing it back to life. It must be fun to be able to give a second life to those old pics you used to look on paper:D

Marc

Assalamaualaikum En Latiff,
this is a beutifully layered demarcation of tonal background. The leading path to the cliff is meaningful as it meets with the mountain. to me its a another mirroring effect : 1. reflection of the river with mountains 2.reflection of the river with the sky 3. mountain with river ( not the reflection). hope you get what i mean, it is a great one.
i like it very much.Thanks.
