Vikings # 2.
Details of the fore of the Vikingship: Lofotr. This ship is an exact copy of the Gokstad Ship that was said to be the most beautiful ship ever built.
The original was excavated in 1880 near Sandefjord, Norway. The ship was built around 850 AC and was made of oak. It is approximately 76 feet long. Believed to bury a king, the ship also contained the remains of 12 horses, 6 dogs and a peacock. 3 smaller boats were also found in the mound. The ship was able to hold 70 men, a double crew-one to row and the other to rest. Oarsmen would sit on their sea chests.
To day the remains of the real Gokstad ship can be seen in the Viking Ship Museum in Oslo, recommended for all visitors interested in ancient history and/or ships.
This is the second pix in my little series of the Vikings.
Tomorrow: The Pilot..

Very fine detail from this genius construction of a ship. I like the hazy background for this great capture.
How did you get it - where you on an other ship?.
Thanks for sharing Jack.
mortijo (12828) 2004-04-20 5:27
Nice shot with lovely soft colors.

This is very atmospheric, Jack. The grey sky and the slight fog forms a beautiful frame for this epic ship with it's good details.
I like your tight crop too. Very good job, Jack.

Besides the perfect composition, the light is really beautiful to highlight the ship and the whole landscape.
The succession of shadow and light parts on the mountain in the background is superb.
Nice shot and interesting serie and notes.
Thank you, Jack !

A great shot, Jack. This almost has an abstract quality to it. I really like how the curve of the ship's bow divides your picture.
manny (21833) 2004-04-20 9:16
Excellent compo. Jack, the colors are really nice. So peaceful and elegant shapes.

Wow! This detail is such a jewel, Jack! The dark colour of the boat matches so perfectly the moody sky and greyish water. The mountains play the colourful element of your picture and make it completed in its absolute beauty. Excellent!!!
ps: congratulations for the hight of 4000 m above the sea level /and the other sheer amateurs in photography/...;-P

Masterful composition, Jack. Great angle to show the detail of the viking ship, which is also serving well as a frame and divider to show the scenic natural elements behind. Fine colors and light, and the NeatImage treatment gives it a nice soft look without losing relevant detail. Well done.

great detail and i like the mist too, very good work indeed, the whole pic looks like it was taken in the time of the vikings, i mean no high sky rises.

Very well coposed, captured and framed, Jack. You perfectly used the 1/3 and 2/3 rule, and you got an excellent subjext, wonderful view and soft light. Very well done, Jack.

Une image antique pour ma part avec un super cadrage qui met cette pointe de barque bien en evidence sur l'image. Cela a été bien vu Jack bravo.

Splendid, Jack !
Nice background too.
jiherka (4538) 2004-04-20 16:42
Very nice picture of this boat, I like the shade of the picture, all in the grey, but with small shade blue, green and brown. Also the composition is good.
Well done Jack.

A favorite! One of the boat photos I liked more in TE.
The POV is very good and the low saturation colors with the softness create a mistical image.
I just can not escape to the viking aura. Along with the Portuguese sailors, unfortunatly manny of their sailling achievements will never be known and trully appreciated...
roshangar (1680) 2004-04-23 13:45
very artistic shot!I missed it befor!

Hi Jack. This is my favourite one in your viking series (good idea). This one really breathes the atmosphere of the days when Vikings ruled the seas. Good perspective and nice sharp.
Eagle78 (1925) 2004-05-09 13:51
Saw all your viking work Jack and think this one is the one i love more! This is a wonderful composition with only this part of the ship and DOF is great letting us explore the marvelous mountains in the background too. Great colors too. Good job :)

I saw this on your website and sought it out. What a grand and magnificent past you've bestowed upon these vikings. We have known them as ruthless killers, but now we see their life ways in all their richness. This image seems to really communicate that richness.
cgrindahl (6113) 2004-05-15 13:02
Lovely composition and fine note. To me Vikings are the professional football team from Minneapolis, Minnesota, my home town... I'm especially struck as I look at this photo by its darkness, with the overcast sky and flat, greyish water. This, in contrast with the brilliant, sunny photos we see elsewhere, still pleases the eye. It is restful to my Norwegian soul. Thank you.
rabani (9645) 2004-05-25 5:58
This is surreal Jack. Like a scene digitally created using 3D editors. This scene is also pretty grey almost metalic. Very cold and also dramatic composition.
rdans59 (263) 2004-06-01 17:59
Wonderful composition Jack. The sharpness of the boat's lines and the softness of the vegetation on the hills across the lake (or fjord?) make a great contrast. Laso the harmony between vertical and horizontal lines make this image quite special.
I found the whole series not only beautiful to look at, but also interesting, as the notes/descriptions bring the images to life.

Superbe image de cette barque Viking, je me suis demandé
si je n'aurais pas essayé une photo, sans couper la partie avant du navire.?? Merci pour l'image/jr
sn00zie (2384) 2004-10-03 4:03
nice details. i like the way the background makes me feel as though this picture is one from the viking era..

Hi, Jack! Fantastic composition here, you choose an extraordinary angle, which gave an excellent perspective to this photo. Excellent colour, sharpness, depth and detail, this is surely one of the better photos i've seen on TE, so it goes to my favourites, as I really liked it!

Thank you for showing the ship in situ ! I haveseen Goktad ship at the Oslo Drakkar museum in 1991 and have been really impressed by this one (rather than the Osenberg ship, more ornamented but clearly with poorer seagoing qualities).
However, I did not know a replica had been built. Any more information about that ?
All the best,
