We have just returned from 12 fabulous days on the Hurtigruten or 'Express Route'. Established in 1893 to improve communications along the coastline, this passenger and freight shipping service has a ship leaving daily from Bergen that travels to Kirkenes (on the border with Russia)and back. Much of the trip is within the Arctic Circle. We were fortunate enough to have a clear sky one night when the aurora borealis prediction was high and saw a marvellous display of the 'Northern Lights'.
Hammerfest claims to be the most northernmost town in the world although there are smaller settlements further north. Hammerfest Kirke, shown in the picture, was built in 1961. The previous church was burned down when the Germans withdrew from Finnmark in 1944.
As you can see from the picture, the snow came down heavily the day that we visited Hammerfest. The weather for most of the trip was fairly sunny but very cold. In the WS I show a window inside the church.

This is much further north than I have ever been or am ever likely to go. There are not many photos from Hammerfest on TE and this is possibly the first one to show the town in winter. One red coat and a few signs are the only details that break the grey dominance, but the nice composition, along with the many tones of grey and white, still makes this an attractive and quite dynamic picture. The lamp-posts join the church-tower in the strong vertical accent and the diagonal lines of various kinds of slush create a good foreground.

Tu as réalisé une belle image bien composé et bien documentée. C'est un festival de lignes droites et verticales. Un ambiance particulière sous la neige.
Bon week-end à toi.

this is difficult weather to take pictures but if well handled one can be rewarded with very nice result as it happens in your case. I like the falling snow which creates very special wintery atmosphere. The church shown through the flakes is an interesting piece of modern architecture, quite unusual in shape. The whole scene gains from very good composition and the presence of couple of the pedestrians who also bring a bit of color to the image.
Well done! TFS!

Interesting modern structure with something from the viking background. Attractive winter scene, well taken.
Enjoy a fine weekend.

I would guess that most people would go to this remote part of the world in summer, just to see the midnight sun. But I understand that the Aurora Borealis would be equally interesting. But you have taken a very good picture here of this interesting church, along with the diagonal lines from the tracks in the snow. The inclusion of people also adds interest to the picture. A very well composed picture. Did this trip also include the Geiranger fjord?

Nice to see you back and nice too that you've started to upload some pictures from what must have been a wonderful trip. And, of course, I'm really looking forward to seeing some of your pictures of the Aurora - it was actually visible in many places in Britain one night about a fornight sgo but I, of course, missed it.
For someone who doesn't like cold weather very much, you were brave to take on this trip and even braver to stand out here in the freezing cold and the snow to take this one. The light is beautifully soft and the tall triangular tower of the church stands out beautifully against a pale blue sky.
Your composition is excellent, the lampposts mimicking the tall "Shard-like" spire, and the inclusion of people - one dressed in red, of course - adds appeal as well as a fine indication of scale. Lovely soft light and colours, perfect exposure and exquisite details and sharpness.

Hi Ann, interesting photograph of this church with the heavy snow, very well captured in this interesting image, with good sharpness, light and color. Very good and interesting job well done, congratulations my friend. Thanks for sharing this beautiful work.
Good night and good Sunday.
Warm greetings from southern Spain.

un bel contrasto con la bella giornata che avevo qui a casa mia.
Bel documento, sia per la neve, sia per l'architettura della chiesa.
Ottima la presenza delle due persone, il vestito rosso colpisce l'attenzione.

Hi Ann - I've long dreamed of exploring the far northern areas of Norway, but I'm not sure I'd venture there any earlier than June! Good for you for making this impressive trip, and I hope we get to see a few more shots from it. This one is great, you've captured the feel of winter with the snowfall and gray conditions nicely. The falling snow creates great depth as well. Amazingly, it seems that northern Norway has a bit less snow on the ground right now than we did here in Boston just a couple weeks ago!

Nice to see you back posting.
Great image from your recent travels, wow, it looks like a heavy snow storm.
Great architecture in the church spire, it adds a certain mood, the people are great walking out of the scene and add life.

Yikes, that looks rather cold and ungashtly here, but then this is part of being that far north. Live for the locals must be pretty hard.
Great document from a place many of us have heard about but not many will see in the end.
The farthest north I have ever been was to Narvik in Norway, which is the northernmost railway station in Europe.
have a great sunday

Now this is winter weather that I don't like Ann. Everything looks grey and miserable only the red accents add a little cheer to the shot. But, despite the horrid weather you have managed to present an interesting and well managed shot.
I look forward to seeing your pics of the aurora borealis, it has to be worth braving the cold to see such a spectacle!
Nice to see you back.

You were brave to tackle this cold journey, although absolutely necessary to capture shots like this. It is beautifully composed, with excellent lead lines from f/g to the red-coated figure and, ultimately, the impressive, triangular church. The church is so well designed that it appears to be lifting the cross aloft.
Have a lovely week,

Ciao e buona settimana

brr..it looks very cold! I didn´t know that Hurtigruten was open for tourism in this part of the year but it certainly gives a chance to see the Amazing Norwegian coastline during all weather conditions. Great vertical composition of this Church and the lamppost, abundant snowfall increases the impression of cold environments. It was 20 degrees Celsius and sunshine when i was here in the 1980s, perhaps due it was summer then:)I hope to see aurora borealis in a forthcoming picture, tfs!
Have a great day/

Fine view of the unique tall steeple Hammerfest Kirke, through the falling snow with plenty of white coverage.
And I am envious of your voyage here, plus seeing the Aurora Borealis.
Thanks for sharing,

looks like the winter does not want to let go.
But as much as I hate winter and cold:)I must say this scenery is just marvelous.I like especially these well visible here snowflakes, which make here the whole, unique mood of the scene.
Have a nice day

it sounds like a really exciting trip to the end of the world! Northern Lights are I guess on many people Bucket list. I am looking forward to see your photos of it. This one here demonstrates the weather which one probably has to face over there at this time of the year. I like how you have captured the snow particles so clear. The composition is great with the road making a pleasant turn and the church adding a nice geometrical shape.
Very well done,

Hi again Ann
I just love the way you captured the snowflakes dancing in the air! The atmosphere here is unmistakeable that of a cold northern country.
The stained glass window is very beautiful.
Have a nice day
