The majority of the Eurasian cranes (Grus grus) are hatching in Scandinavia and parts of Russia, and the Scandinavian hatchers spend the winter in southern France and Spain. Smart birds…
Four of them were visiting a field near me the other day, and I was lucky to get a few shots of them! Mama, papa and two young birds, and the juveniles are already almost the same size as the parents. The Eurasian crane is a large bird - standing up to 130 cm, with a wingspan of 240 cm and weighing up to 6 kg.
They came by last year too, possibly the same adult birds but then they stayed for a few days. Unfortunately not so this time, as they left after a few minutes in the afternoon. But opposite to last year they brought the youngsters this time! The crane lays only two eggs so this year the hatching was 100% successful…
For your information, the juvenile is the all grey one!

This snap is so perfectly executed by you. Excellent colours and just in time snap to take the folding legs. The colour difference of the birds adds to the attraction.

The trees are framing well the birds. The point of view is showing the details and colors of the cranes. The afternoon light is enhancing the colors. Have a nice day.

Volatile assez impressionnant. Le mâles est beaucoup plus coloré que la femelle , mais il la laisse passer devant. Un beau cadrage qui laisse de l'espace devant.

Waylim (25502) 2011-08-26 10:21
Beautiful couple, almost like they are doing syncornize walking. Beautiful fresh green field and vegetation, the dark green background really bring out the birds nicely with good depth.
PaulVDV (29019) 2011-08-26 14:22
I thought that the difference in colour was related to their gender. But it's the difference between a young and an older bird.
Very good capture and I like how we see them walking through the high grass.
Best regards, Paul

How exciting to have such magnificent birds visit near you, you captured good detail in the feathers and it is interesting to see the contrast between the adult and juvenile birds. Amazing that you were able to get out there with your camera with only a few minutes.

j'aime beaucoup cette photo , meme si elle manque un peu de résolution et même si l'exposition des herbes les rendent un peu flashy.
C'est cocasse et inhabituel, un plongeon agréable dans la nature.
rodgerg (55767) 2011-08-28 0:34
a perfect dubble portrait! Congratulations for this excellent nad not easy photowork. The two birds arise very well in the green color of the Bg and its attitudes are very well collected. Desicive moment too with the two animals well located in the image.

A Composition and presentation are pleasant for look at. You're with original point and wonderfull idea of cranes and in colorful. Nice presentation of couple cranes. An interesting species and colours. Good photo work.
UlfE (14641) 2011-08-28 11:49
An excellent bird photo, perhaps not technically perfect in all respects, but I know how difficult it is to take a photo like this. It is not easy to get close to wild animals and I think you have done a wonderful photo job with this shot. The two cranes both standing one leg is a fantastic capture and I love how the birds stand out against the green grass and the dark background. The sharpness and detail is very good taking into account that you most likely were not very close to these birds. TFS and have nice Sunday evening!
P.S. As usual I really enjoy when you post something unusual.
josepmarin (58357) 2011-08-28 12:04
these two elegant cranes, which you have caught skillfully in this capture, must be on the verge of their travel towards south, in search of a warmer environment.
The image is really sharp, and we can see all the details of these graceful birds, in the middle of a very green landscape, in a photo with a good field depth.
A great work, my friend.
barrufeto_77 (28886) 2011-08-28 13:58
Excellent, excellent moment. For sure, a great shot.
Furthermore, the "greens" in the background are algo great.
Cricri (119577) 2011-08-28 23:33
Beaucoup d'élégance de ces hauts oiseaux, c'est une jolie prise dont vous êtes le spécialiste, bonne netteté et couleurs
maloutim (9639) 2011-08-29 5:56
Your captures of wild life are always such a delight. I have never seen an adult crane from so near as to be able to admire its varied palette of colours.
They look wonderfully bright and elegant against the green background.
One can read the eyes of the two birds : The young one on the alert, ready to obey its parent, whereas the adult is keeping a watchful eye on its offspring.
Thank you for sharing.
agulberk (3794) 2011-08-29 6:53
I was not gonna understand which one is a reflection of other one ,if their color difference was not .

Good capture to a pair of crane, just look like dancing while they are almost taking the same step and in similar posture, weeds in vivid color add fantastic effect to the scene, thanks for sharing an impressive nature view.
jafadabret (56501) 2011-09-05 8:52
