Photographer’s Note

Many of the farms in Oppdal are built between ski lifts and slopes, or to be accurate… It is the other way since the farms were there first!

Like here, you can see a lift in the background if you look closely, and my point of view is shown in the first WS image!

I did mention in my former posting that red barns are not that common in Oppdal, what we see here is the typical mountain barn constructed in a combination of sunburned timber logs and stone. The explanation is the need for warm shelters during the harsh winter in this altitude, as barns are used to house the cattle during the cold snowy season.

The farm here is located in the hillside, and you may note there is no well-defined yard as the houses are built side by side because of the slope. Please notice the small bell tower on the barn, the bell was used to summon the workers on the fields to meals!

I’m also adding another WS showing the location from a distance, and where I have marked the farm in the main posting.

This is the second image in a mini series showing three different farm types/ designs in the mountain village Oppdal. This place used to be a typical farming area but nowadays tourism is by far more important, based on alpine skiing.
