Photographer’s Note

Maybe some remember my red squirrel (Eurasian squirrel, Sciurus vulgaris) from a couple of weeks ago? Here comes more as the little guys are accustomed to me and more cooperative by now, and they are willing to pose without being bribed!

I like to imagine this is a little lady, for several reasons:

- she is submissive to the others
- she cleans her paws carefully after eating
- she brings food to the nest after she has eaten
- she is prettier than the guys hahaha

In a group of squirrels social organization is based on dominance hierarchies within and between sexes; although males are not necessarily dominant to females, the dominant animals tend to be larger and older than subordinate animals, and dominant males tend to have larger home ranges than subordinate males or females.

Workshop I shows a dominat male rising up to an approacing animal. By making himself look even bigger than he is he is able to make the other animal go away without risking injuries in a fight.
