Photographer’s Note
The habitat of the red squirrel (Eurasian squirrel) basically follows the Taiga from the Pacific to the Atlantic ocean, including also the rest of Europe south to the Mediterranean. In Great Britain and Ireland however, numbers have decreased drastically in recent years, in part because of the introduction of the eastern grey squirrel from North America.
The image shows one of the guys I spent hours videotaping yesterday, resulting in around 15 minutes of video, unedited.
I’m so lucky to have two squirrel couples living nearby and it is real fun to study their behaviour. There is some animosity present between the couples, even if they have nest in different trees. They engange in daily fights, but I’m not sure they are so serious… it is more like marking territory. The fights are very hard to film as these little critters are incredibly fast! Up and down trees, around in the grass at amazing speed…
Bribing is of course the strategy to make them cool down and cooperate, and squirrels love brownies! Peanuts are not a favourite but dry bread is fine, I have even seen them nibble salami but that is rather low on the list.
The red squirrel has a typical head-and-body length of 19 to 23 cm, a tail length of 15 to 20 cm and a body weight of 250 to 340 g. The red squirrel is somewhat smaller than the eastern grey squirrel. It is thought that the long tail helps the squirrel to balance and steer when jumping from tree to tree and running along branches and it may also keep the animal warm during sleep.
The coat of the red squirrel varies in colour with time of year and location. There are several different coat colour morphs ranging from almost black to red. The underside of the squirrel is always cream white in colour.
The red squirrel sheds the fur coat twice a year, switching from a thinner summer coat to a thick darker winter coat with noticeably larger ear-tufts between August and November.
In the picture you can see a red squirrel in summer coat enjoying a slice of brownie in the morning sun.
WORKSHOP A shows a fellow eating dry bread and still wearing most of the grey winter coat, WORKSHOP B shows one of the guys up a tree looking for fresh cone buds which seems to be a real treat for them!

Hi Pablo,
Great shot! Something like this is very difficult to pull off (what with squirrels being hyper and usually shy), but you did it marvelously. The show is composed extremely well with the different laysers of vegetation and varying levels of focus, but the squirrel right there crisp, cute and in an action pose.
But wait... You feed the squirrels brownies and salami!?! Hahaha! A squirrel that eats chocolate and pigs... now I have heard of everything.
Cheers,
Jordan

Hi Pablo,
I often saw red squirrels in forests around Paris and even in Paris, but I have never succeeded to photograph them. They move very fast!
Then I appreciate these three photos. On this one, the lighting is particularly successful. The squirrel is really well centred in the vegetation.

Hello Pablo,
We have also many squirrels in the park of the castle of Versailles, but I never could obtain a photograph of also beautiful quality of the animal... Very good DOF on the subject which allows a pleasant development in its natural environment and pretty relief, the light is a beautiful asset. I like much your photographs in WS which shows us that the squirrel of your areas are not so savage !!! Well done Pablo and thank you for the interesting note.

Hi Pablo,
Excellent capture, well framed. I like a lot that little brown fellow on that green, sun-lighted BG. I'd like to photograph some squirrels too, because they are adorable, but I think this is a tricky, difficult action. And, of course, you can hardly find any squirrels in Ploiesti...Very interesting note.

So it is nice to see them. But i met many persons, specially from America who say that they make a lot of harm. Th squirrels on your photos are just like ours.

Hello Pablo,
I always enjoy photos of Nature, and especially such spontaneous shots!
The main photo offers us a "classic" posture of a squirrel busy with eating :)) What is also very attractive about this photo is the depth which is created by the combination of clear, sharp and blurred (each in a different way) areas.
A good photo creating a good mood - and a smile :)

Hi Pablo,
Thank you for the introduction to this beautiful fellow. While this is the best of the three photos, it really takes all three shots for an good introduction to a stranger like me. In this shot I love the sense that he is poised to leap away, in spite of the treat. I actually thought he was some king of rabbit with the huge ear tufts and well-developed haunches. The DOF is perfect with your buddy in sharp focus while his red coat contrasts nicely with the foliage, the soft focus really makes him jump out. The other photos helped correct my misconceptions and the note is very interesting.

Bonjour, cher ami Pablo,

Hi Pablo!
How lucky you are indeed to have been able to photograph these red squirrels! But of corse, they are nearly your pets living nearby!
In the complete wild, they are so hard to catch! You see them quickly, and in the next few seconds, they are gone!
The grey squirrel seems to be easier to photograph and more prone to get used to people, if I draw conclusions from the theme "squirrels". In London, there are thousands of them, nearly coming to eat in people's hands! But what a pity they eradicated the red species!
Your picture is delightful and so fresh and sharp!
Thanks for sharing and have a food Sunday!

Hello Pablo!
The lush green makes a very good background for that red squirrel. The light and contrasts are excellent. The main subject is really sharp and clear. Very informative note! Good work and thanks for sharing.
Best regards
Denis!

Dear Pablo
Fantastic shot, I like squirrels a lot. They are very fast and in Thailand, where also squirrel species are living, they are very shy. Your squirrel is very sharp, as it has to be the background is out of focus. Colors are vibrant and your "actor" is sitting in the sunlight. Perfect DOF. Well done
Best regards
Urs
