Photographer’s Note

MINIMALISM

Minimalism describes movements in various forms of art and design, especially visual art and music, where the work is stripped down to its most fundamental features. As a specific movement in the arts it is identified with developments in post-World War II western art.

Prominent artists associated with this movement include Donald Judd, Carl Andre and Richard Serra.

The term "minimalist" is often applied colloquially to designate anything which is spare or stripped to its essentials. It has also been used to describe the plays of Samuel Beckett, the films of Robert Bresson, the stories of Raymond Carver, and even the automobile designs of Colin Chapman.

Minimalism in visual art, sometimes referred to as literalist art emerged in New York in the 1960s. It is regarded as a reaction against the painterly forms of abstract expressionism as well as the discourse, institutions and ideologies that supported it.

I can't say much about this photo merely because: 1) it's really minimalistic 2) because this chimney pipe looks (to me) like a chimneysweep's hat! only for some reason this is a brick hat :)
What do I like about this photo? it gives room for imagination.

Hi Pablo,

The diagonal lines of the roof and the rectangular shape of the bricks are assets to the composition. The point of view is allowing us to see the details and colors of the roof and of the chimney. The nice blue sky is sending a light which is well managed and is enhancing the colors. Have a nice day.

Hi, Pablo -

I am a big fan of minimalism, but I wonder if this isn't a bit too "stripped down." On the other hand, the more I study it, the more it seems to appeal to me, so maybe I'll leave it at saying this photo challenges me, which is probably what it's all about.

I keep going back and forth, so I'll stop while I'm in "forth" position and say that it continues to intrigue me.

I love the contrast between the old chimmeny and the modern roof even if I am not too fond of such "heavy restorations of old building that I guess this is. Hi Pablo,

I like this “minimalism” very much, and chimneypots are great objects for that.
As a matter of fact, I made quite a lot of pictures of the famous British chimneypots last weeks myself. Maybe I find one between the 3700 pictures I took in the last fortnight in S.E.-England to upload.

Hi Pablo,
I thought about minimalism before I noticed the note. Not really surprising, I know... It's a very effective and catchy compo, with just 3 elements, ecah one with its own colours and textures. It's a bit intriguing seeing that brick chimney with antique look on the top of those metal (?) roof, but that's another thing that makes the photo so interesting.

After the sign post, a single chimney. As you mention, a bit minimalist, but there is an interesting contrast between the plain blue sky anf the - compartively - rich colors fothe bricks.

Love it, Pablo. In the thumbnails I thought the chimney was a building with a very interesting facade. The sense of scale changes the perception of things...The chimney make a wonderful contrast with the sky and the diferent texture/tone of each brick is super atractive in such a simple composition.

Yet, the composition, the textures, the shapes and the colours are so much easier to digest and enjoy!

I think a minimalist composition must be very good; nthere is no room for an attractive subject or scene swaying one's emotions. Here the luminosity of the the sky sets off the warm details of the bricks, the line between the roof and the sky is dead-on straight and contrasts with the slightly tipsy chimney; it all works together well.
