Winter in Oppdal [5] Photo

Photographer’s Note

This image shows one of the shops in the centre of the village called vpg.no. The initials VPG stand for Vertical PlayGround and describes pretty well what their trade is, namely equipment for activities in up- or downward movement! Got it…?

The term “vertical playground” also describes what Oppdal is about as a tourist destination, as many of the activities you can enjoy either takes you up or down, or more correctly both! Downhill skiing, rafting, climbing, and parachuting to mention some...

As the name of the shop describes Oppdal quite well in a short term I also found the image to offer a nice colour contrast to the mainly blue and white winter landscapes in the series!

The workshop image shows the scene in a wider perspective.

Oppdal is an alpine village located between Dovrefjell mountain plateau in the south and Trollheimen mountain range to the west. The village is surrounded by majestic mountains, green valleys with idyllic summer farms and fine trout fishing.

Traditionally Oppdal was a place for winter tourism, but in the later years the range of offered activities for summer has increased. Today you can go mountain climbing, take a musk ox safari or go rafting or visit museums and art galleries if that is your preference, to mention a few.

This small series will show the different sides of Oppdal as a winter destination.

Olá Pablo, funny addition to the series you've been showing. The sign stands out so much that almost seems like a sticker in my screen (I tried to remove it but it didn't work out :o) A detail I like a lot is the presence of the very vertical lamppost in the background. I wonder if there's any sport that involves climbing that post... :))) Nice WS for more context.

The standard lamp points out the verticals which one finds on the part of the wooden building. Contrast between the foreground very sharp and the background is pleasant. The detail shot shows humor, in addition to the announcement of the downhill facilities. In Venice, in one street corner I remember a yellow sign, with arrows pointing to the right and to the left (your image rotated 90°) as directions to San Marco Basilica. Good eye for detail.

Hello Pablo, Interesting & unusual sign one that shows no lack of imagination, without your explanation I think I would not have understood it.
I also think the colour contrast between the reds & blue is very nice. The WS version is also very interesting as it shows a more complete picture of this very beautiful Alpine village. The quality is excellent as always with the correct amount of blur in the BG building & light post.

Actually you are right in saying that this can be taken as a kind of description or symbol of Opdal: red and blue seem its main colours visble everywhere. It's the kind of photos I usually do when abroad, because I think that the peculiarity of a place can be seen even in small details such as those ones: the special shape of a fence or a street lamp. A street sign, etc. things that at home we take for granted. If I had not read your note the meaning of this sign would have been a mitery to me. Looking better at it the composition is a kind of emblem of this town with the roof of the other house in the bg to the left. A photo off the usual track that compels us to stop and reflect.

Strong graphics, helped by strong colours that make a very nice contrast. An apparently banal shot that reveals a great sense of observation.
I like also the WS, for much the same reasons, although it has less impact. Curiously, it features mainly red and blue also.
