Winter in Oppdal [1] Photo

Photographer’s Note

My former posting from Oppdal, an image taken Sunday two weeks ago, was the result of a poorly configured and unfamiliar new camera, which I bought on impulse the day before! A combination of factory settings and lack of experience with the equipment resulted in some rather mediocre images tech wise, but as you all know this is an everlasting learning process...

Last Thursday I went to Oppdal again for business, but the weather was very inviting so I brought my camera too! And this time I was better prepared, as I had changed the configuration of the camera and also had become a bit more familiar with the features.

What we see here is Stølen ski centre, one of three distinct but connected ski areas in Oppdal. Stølen is located to the north of the village, not far from Oppdal Airport Fagerhaug (ENOP). Stølen is the place for the rich and beautiful, flying in with private aircrafts or driving huge 4x4 on Friday afternoon, planning a weekend of skiing combined with heavy parties!

Oppdal is an alpine village located between Dovrefjell mountain plateau in the south and and Trollheimen mountain range to the west. The village is surrounded by majestic mountains, green valleys with idyllic summer farms and fine trout fishing.

Traditionally Oppdal was a place for winter tourism, but in the later years the range of offered activities for summer has increased. Today you can go mountain climbing, take a musk ox safari or go rafting or visit museums and art galleries if that is your preference, to mention a few.

This small series will show the different sides of Oppdal as a winter destination.

All pictures in the series were taken within this informative map of lifts and slopes:

An another excellent winter's view in your gallery with a large composition well balanced. The houses with red colours arise evry well in the image. Light, contrasts, depht... A very good photowork. Interesting too.

Hi Pablo, Your last photo was not so mediocre :)). Here is more interesting also because the weather is more favourable. I can see here two splendid slopes, very broad. The houses are also attractive - the red nicely contrasts with black and white. Excellent sharpness and colourful photo with wonderful blue sky.

The pists make a nice pattern along the slope and the the buildings give a fine combination effect with the white snow and the blue sky. Almost Norwegian colours!

A sunny day transforms everything, the blue sky makes a fine cromatic contrast with the snowy mountains and the red houses. A lovely broad sight of this attractive village.

beautiful landscape in this alpine village in a framing who allows us to enjoy its beauty and the interesting integration of the houses with the hillsides of these mountains.
The chromatic contrast of the snow, the houses and the sky is fantastic.
Don't worry, when we start working with a new camera, it is always necessary to learn to use it correctly, especially if it is a great camera (D300) with many features and multiple adjustments.

This is a well composed winter image. The ski slopes add nice lines to the shot. The houses provide good contrast to the snow covered landscape. The lighting and colors are great with excellent sharpness and detail.

you did a good job on your new acquisition. It's a real good catch. There is no overexposure on the snow and the sky has such an attractive blue tone. I like how you divided the image, placing the horizon line in the second third. Great job!

Hi Pablo,

The point of view takes our eyes toward the top of the mountain which is giving depth to the photo. The curves of the two ski slopes are assets to the composition. The nice blue sky is sending a light which is enhancing the colors. have a nice day.

Hi Pablo. You have to watch that impulse buying, can be quite expensive! Nice capture, excellent colours and sharpness. I might have been tempted to either include or exclude the bottom houses so as not to cut them in half, not sure which would be more effective though. Thanks for sharing and enjoy your new camera.

The little winter village at the base of the slopes gives the feeling of a Christmas card for skiers; great detail, perfect light management. I've add the photo to my collection for snow play.

Congratulations on your impulse AND your rapid learning curve!! It has taken me more than a couple of weeks to sort out my D300, and it wasn't my first Nikon!! Sorry I'm so slow, I've been working on taxes.

Pablo. the brightly colored buildings make the white less daunting I think. I am sure they also collect more solar heat by being dark but they must also perk up the spirits. Your efforts with the new camera are paying off, this is a fine capture.

The winter does not look so menacing when the scenery is attractive as this capture of the blue sky in strong contrast to the white snowy ground dotted with green plants and trees. The gentle slope of rolling terrain also creates a pleasant view of the ski center.

Hi, Pablo. The white of the snow stands out well against the blue of the sky. The ski slopes are well individualized between the different parts of the forest, which creates contrast just as the colours of the houses. Maybe I would have framed just a little lower to get more of the red house on the right in the frame.

Hello Pablo, At the end of March & it still looks like winter, maybe the blue sky is a sign that it is nearly all over, I'm surprised to see it is well covered in with snow. Lovely winter scene with the red houses adding interest & colour. The quality of this image also suggests to me that you have mastered your new toy or should I say excellent quality equipment. ;-)

Do you think is worthwhile to get a D300? I have a D200, looks for your note that it is difficult to manage.
Your shot is very good, maybe next time you can decrease the amount of sky to be able to get the red houses in the foreground without being cut. Nice colors and beautiful landscape,

But with Kids and family fantastic.

The undulating hills, cleared ski slopes and the bare trees remind me of Geilo where I spent a winter (1973-74)working in a hotel.
