Stormy Winter Sunday Photo

Photographer’s Note

Sunday a couple of weeks ago was the most stormy so far this year, with heavy wind all day. Still I did go to Oppdal, a mountain village a couple of hours drive away.

The weather was varied to say the least, with quick change between cloudy and sunny and this resulted in interesting photo conditions. Shady parts broken by direct sunshine on fresh snow, quite a challenge exposure wise...

In the image we can see the southern part of Mt Hornet (Storhornet, altitude 1589 m), visible from almost everywhere in the village and surroundings as it marks the western border of the municipality.

If you look closely at the first workshop image - WS 1 - you will see how the snow blows off the summit, indicating that the weather is not suited for skiing and outdoor activities this Sunday in March!

WS 2 shows a street scene from the village.

I have posted several images from the Oppdal area before, but here comes some facts about the place.

Oppdal is a mountain village located in the south-western part of Sør-Trøndelag county. The place used to be a typical farming area but nowadays tourism is by far more important, based on alpine skiing during winter and different outdoor activities in the summertime. The municipality has around 6.500 inhabitants and most of them live around the centre Oppdal.

A superb winter's landscape very well collected. An image with a great depht of field and acomposition in differents plans well contrasted. I like too in your image the beautiful contrast betewwen parts in light and part in shade.

Hi Pablo,
Sunlight, shadows, clouds and snow do make difficult photographic conditions. However, when the light is handled perfectly, as you have here; the result is very dramatic. I especially like the cloud shadows on the snow and the tree silhouettes against the clouds. The village is very charming and the wind off the top looks like skiing would NOT be fun.

Excellent and really well-composed shot. I love the way the verges of the road start in each of the bottom corners. You also make very good use of the lighting conditions. The sun lit snow covered mountains looks beautiful. I also like the almost blue wet asphalt of the road. Very well spotted. TFS and have a nice evening!

Honestly this is not one of your best. The conditions were too difficult and I find all the lower part of the photogram too dark and with very few definition and contrast. Of course the view of the white mountains in the bg is fine enough, still to my eye the composition is somewhat unbalanced. Maybe I'm missing something here that all the other see. I do prefer the ones in the ws.

Hi, Pablo. The road leads us nicely into the picture towards the hills in the background. The silhouettes of the trees and the black strip of tarmac contrast well with the snow fields. The light is well managed to let us enjoy this late winter scene.

When I am looking at this landscape I feel that it's all cold, so cold that it is even cold to look at it :) LOL
Good choice of the composition. I am so impressed by the sky and the mountains!
In a way it reminds me of the weather which has set in here a couple of days ago: cold, dank, windy, very uncomfortable - and sunny at the same time!

Hi Pablo,

The diagonal line of the road is an asset to the composition. The point of view takes our eyes toward the curve of the road and the mountain in the background which is giving depth to the photo. The trees are framing well the road. The cloudy sky is filtering the light and is giving a good contrast between the colors. have a nice day.

Hello Pablo, The light is really interesting in this cold winter scene, there are some very bright areas especially on the snow covered mountain slopes where the sun must be shinning & very dark shady ares along the road, but I think you managed this difficult light well & produced a very good image of excellent quality. I like the on coming cars with their head lights on & the blue sky which suggests to me that is nice weather not far away. I also like the two WS versions, it must have been cold & very windy on that mountain.

I do not know what amazes me most: the light on the snowy mountains or the clouds coming up from behind the mountains. It is a great capture of the dynamic weather with an excellent management of the light and very nice colors. The photos in WS are also highly appreciated. TFS!

This shot is so beautiful. The leading road is just brilliant going down the hill with the snowy hill in the backdrop. The leafless trees fencing the frame making it pleasing against the cloudy blue sky. I like it and well done.

Bien vu cette route qui conduit le regard jusqu'à la montagne toute blanche de neige et de lumière. Les temps de giboulées donnent des points plus éclairés que d'autres dans le paysage et souvent il faut en profiter pour déclencher.

There is not much color in this photo but I like it for your tonal management. The varied tones from the white of the mountains to the grayish tones of the foreground are very well done. The dark part on the trees could have been lightened by post processing.

Good POV and DOF given by the curve of the road. The cars withe their lights on give some strange feeling, considering the fact that is daytime and that lighted blue sky...

It looks cold and to drive on such roads is not a pleasure at all. Even I always liked snow, but not on the roads, but in the mountains to be able to go skying. Since I live in Asia, I never went skying. What a pity, but I do not miss the snow on the roads. Even flooded roads are easier to navigate the snow roads. Fine color and light management, well done
