Photographer’s Note

What you see here is a roadside diner and motel located near Oppdal Airport Fagerhaug ENOP, one of many businesses in Oppdal based on tourism.

This is the only image in the series from a location outside the slopes map, which URL is shown in the bottom of the note. The airport is just outside the right edge of the map.

The house shown here is built with an architecture resembling old Norwegian building traditions, with timber walls and a sod roof. Traditionally this roofing method was used because it was cheap and an efficient insulator but today this is probably the most expensive kind of roof!

The workshop image shows the motel from another angle.

Quite a few of you who commented on the first image in the series mention the amount of snow this late in March!

Except that 2009 is the most snowy year in ages, there are a couple of other things too: The slopes are always covered with a carpet of artificially made snow in the start of the season, so all the snow is not natural. Besides, this is an altitude up to over 1500 m and spring always arrives later up in the mountains. And in Oppdal snow equals business!

---------------------------

Oppdal is an alpine village located between Dovrefjell mountain plateau in the south and and Trollheimen mountain range to the west. The village is surrounded by majestic mountains, green valleys with idyllic summer farms and fine trout fishing.

Traditionally Oppdal was a place for winter tourism, but in the later years the range of offered activities for summer has increased. Today you can go mountain climbing, take a musk ox safari or go rafting or visit museums and art galleries if that is your preference, to mention a few.

This small series will show the different sides of Oppdal as a winter destination.

All pictures in the series were taken within this informative map of lifts and slopes:
