March is the time when the ice on the river breaks up, that is in a normal year!

But what is normal any more, as ice breaking in my part of the world now is varying between January and March…

This is river Gaula from last year when ice break happened on March 17. To photograph this when it happens you either have to be lucky to be in the right place at the right time, or you need someone living near the river to notify you when it happens! Here we can see how the broken ice is packing up in a narrow stretch in the river, and in years with more ice this can cause problems and flooding.

During the last years ice break is of short endurance since the ice is thin and is moved quickly away by the water…

In the workshop I have included an image with a different angle on the breaking ice.

In a few weeks the salmon starts entering the river, preparing for the September spawning. The longest travelling salmon will have to go around 110 km upstream to reach their “childhood home” in the river!

Hi,Pablo,
Nice shot with well shown northern colours.
I like when spring breaks the ice.
The tender birches' twigs are a good idea.
TFS

Hello Pablo
Une très belle lumière pour saisir ce "moment juste"!!
Le morceaux de glace donne une belle touche graphique à cette photo et le pont s'intègre parfaitement dans cette composition.
Du très bon travail.
Bon WE, amicalement
Hervé

Not dangerous so much ice on the river?
Here for the last 4 years was really dangerous
This year fortunately is better :)
Happy Easter

Hi Pablo,
Great view over the river and the broken ice. The ice creates a very nice pattern along with the already visible water. The composition is excellent too with the bridge placed on the left hand side. Also the inclusion of the branches in the upper right hand corner is good. Thanks for sharing this moment!
Regards,
Lars

Nice view of the Ice break from a lovely POV and interesting note, thanks for sharing Pablo,

have a nice weekend,
Fabio.

Hi Pablo,
An image that makes us feel the cold winter environment, in a good setting with the frozen river, the bridge in diagonal and a great perspective, and the branches in foreground.
Great light and natural colors, in a very attractive composition.
Best regards,
Josep

Bonjour Pablo

Hi Pablo,

Yes, it is the time of the year, spring has arrived in my country. It is still cold and windy. The ice is starting to break on the diffrent rivers like on your photo. The point of view takes our eyes towards the mountain in the background. The ice in the foreground is a good addition to the composition. The subject is well framed and the photo is clear and precise. Have a nice day.

Pierre

Dear Pablo,
Splendid landscape view. The composition is very attractive, colours and lights are beautiful. Excellent shot with interesting note, Very well done my friend! Happy Easter

Hi Pablo,
Great late winter capture of this decisive moment in nature when winter's firm girp is finally broken. Excellent details and sharpness to the floating ice below the vivid blue winter sky. After a cold winter we had a very warm day in early April that cause the ice to break suddenly and it sounded like a bomb going off. The rushing ice went up a flat bank several hundered meters and took out the wall of an old brick house.
Regards, Tom

- It's surprising for we who live in softer areas, however that existed also here but since a few years, that becomes rare, in any case the advisability to make a beautiful photo, cheers and TFS.

It sounds as if you were lucky to catch this moment. It's not a sight we see in the UK. You had difficult light and there seems to be some under-exposure. I was curious to see if any detail could be teased out of the shadows so I hope you don't mind that I tried a WS.

Hello Pablo. You have chosen perfect moment for this composition. The ice flakes is just stunning on the surface creating very interesting texture on the surface. A very fine picture which really gives you the sense of the North.
I've seen the ws done by feather and while it is nice too, I still prefer your version because preserves the high contrast between the ice and the hills-trees, and the cold light present in the scene.
I like very much the high definition of the detalils too.

Hi Pablo,
You sure caught this at the right moment!! The thinness of the ice is evident in your photo. We have a cousin with a beach house on the Northumberland Strait in Nova Scotia; he has an old photo of the breakup years ago where the salty ice chunks were as big as small cars - no more! ! In fact your photo looks a lot like what I saw when I flew back from Denmark last year in July.

Reminds of a line from that 60's song, "Where have all the flower's gone?" It was, "When will we ever learn?" And we thought we had accomplished something but now we have the world's worst terrorist in the White House.

Okay, no more raving, I'm focusing on health, lpove & joy and at least I'm happier.

Hej Pablo.
Very pleasing photo of this ice beaking. Maybe it's a bit dark (but I just saw the great WS done by Kath). The composition with the thin branches is really good and so is the ice-puzzle. About the normal weather; the lakes and the sea around where I live haven't had any ice in this winter (maybe one day or two with very thin ice)

Maybe a litte underexposed Pablo as the background hills comes out pitch black. Beside of that an interesting sompo with good use of the bridge and with fine details of the ice out in the river.

Impressive early spring scene--the blue sky, the brown mountains (no green leaves yet !!), the breaking ice, the special, undecided March light...

Hello Pablo,

Frozen rivers are always a welcome sight, though care is needed to thread over them. Good angle to capture the ice blocks and the bridge on the left. The image is sharp, with nice colours and very pleasant to see. The tree bracnhes do a good job to frame the view of the floating ice. Nice work Pablo.

Hi Pablo, good positioning to capture this breakup of the ice. Having the bridge included in the shot as you do, gives the shot some scale. Your shot may be just a tad dark, Kath has prepared a good workshop for you. The colour is good, and I especially like the texture you've managed to capture with this break up, a sure sign of spring.

Thanks,John
