Photographer’s Note
Some of my fellow trekkers have a habit of using a part of this space to tell me what they find attractive with their work when posting an image. Don’t do that. It is up to me and the other trekkers to tell the poster what we think. Not the other way around.
I have no problem understanding that you like the image you’re publishing! That is one of the main reasons for posting the picture.
I have stopped giving critiques to images that come with a self-declaration!
When I publish an image I always have a message, weak or strong, an idea I hope the picture will communicate! But there is no way I can control if it works if I post the image with a written statement…
I want to read the crits and see if they support my theory, my idea or not… That is an important part of why I am I member of this distinguished society!
And of course you’re free to comment on this image too… Even if the important part of the message this time comes in writing!

Hi Pablo
In one sweep of the eyes,we are seeing what this part of Norway looks like.
Using the road as a lead in,flanked by the railroad,we are transported through the farmer's field to the colored mountain and offered a glimpse of a valley(fjord?) and more mountains on the horizon.
Must be a classic scenery of the Norwegian coast?
Well exposed and with good contrast. No excess in sharpening visible.
Have a good day

A very strong message, Pablo and I am going to go back and reread all of my notes to see if I am guilty!!!
I love the sky in this one above all and the lead-in lines work well. Great colours and textures too

And thanks for your honest critique of my Toronto Sunset shot. I shall be working on improving it over the next few days.

Great image. Now tell me, what were you going for here? :)
Now I personally like the strong sense of line. The mountain, cloud, road and rows int he field all lead us to roughly the same spot. It's too bad we couldn't see more of the small house that is near that point.

Interesting note!
Let me think about it: I think that you are quite right... but I think also that TE friends have to write the reasons why they are posting just that picture.... and, as you write, the reason is "because they like that one", ....so they explain why they like their own work! We say: the cat is running after his own tail!
I think that the reason for choose and post a picture should be connect with TE aim : Learning about the world through photography - notes shoud explain that, and pictures should help us to discover something about the places described, maybe regarding far countries or our home window.
I like this picture of yours because it is well done, sharp, good colours, perfect! And the place is lovely; in the compo I notice the little white pole as a focal point, cennected with a long horizontal shadow (I suppose it is a shadow) parallel with a cloud. I see this structure in your picture, and I like it

That's a strong note Pablo! I just looked back at some of my posts and the only time I have been guilty of that lately is a little bit today funnily enough. It really doesn't bother me when people do it; it's maybe not always to self-promote but as a justification if you are nervous about the quality of a particular image. Not everyone has your confidence.
This photo:- good use of the plough lines as well as the road as a lead-in. Good sideways light on the scene emphasises the furrows well. The Autumn colours among the trees enhance the scene. a very pleasant photo.
You didn't leave yourself time to tell us anything about it, which is my biggest bugbear.
I've read all the replies so you can save time if you wanted to send me one.

Hello Pablo, which curious photograph, all here make me think of a circuit for car, it is a framing adapted well so that you want to show, first of all the hill on the left, massive imposing, then the furrows which seem to slow down the glance until A almost solidified, follows that accelerates with this road strewn with fine gravels accelerating our vision, the whole countered by the railroad which seems rectified the insane curve of the road towards the bottom of l`image, it is what I will call a sight at two speeds, but that does not remove anything with the attraction which I carry to this beautiful landscape, .................Hello Pablo, quelle curieuse photo, tous ici me fait penser à un circuit pour automobile, c’est un cadrage bien adapté à ce que tu veux montrer, tout d’abord la colline à gauche, massive imposante, ensuite les sillons qui semblent ralentir le regard jusqu’a presque le figé, ensuit cela s’accélère avec cette route parsemée de gravillons accélérant notre vision, le tout contré par le chemin de fer qui semble redressé la courbe folle de la route vers le fond de l‘image, c’est ce que j’appellerai une vue à deux vitesses, mais cela n’enlève rien à l’attrait que je porte à ce beau paysage, bien amicalement

(2507) 2006-10-26 10:39
I don't know what you were trying to convey here Pablo. Did you even get out of the car?
Technically it's fine, compositionally it is adequate, aesthetically it doesn't do anything for me. The only reason I dropped in is the title - a cheap ploy to get attention in my opinion.
BTW I don't agree with your notes - in my opinion the photo-taker is quite within their rights to mention what they like about their image. It tells me a lot about the photographer; was the thing they like a happy accident, was it part of the motivation to take the shot, is it teaching me, the viewer, anythig about the image, or technique.
Let people write whatever they want in their notes - life's too short to conscientiously boycott images just because the photographer wrote something about their image that anooys you

Olá Pablo,
I like this composition, in her we see magnificent colors of autumn in the forest, with a great resistance with the blue sky and clouds. The curve of the road attracts our glance and it takes to us towards the infinite, towards even very distant horizon. Wonderful light and beautiful colors.
Excellent!

Hei Pablo,
Very nice landscape, I really like the pattern of the plowed field parallel to the road. I feel it guides my eyes in to the image and towards the buildings.
About your note: I like the way you put things. I allso see that I should sensor my self better, and I agree with you. The viewer of an image should be 100% able to make up his/her own mind about an image.
Thank you for sharing this nice scene and your views on what I should avoid in a note. I think that it is good that someone steps up and lets people know that a photo one person thinks is great another with different experiance and different interests might think is not as good. (I personally am very new to photography, and so I'm getting used to the fact that members of TE with more experiance do not like or see potential in photos I might ber very proud of. I am very gratefull for this, becaus with constructive critisism I'll learn more. And learning to see things in new ways or just differently is why I think that this is a great web site.)
Friendly,

Hi , Pablo .
That's what I call a " wake up call " and after all I am very pleased with it since you give me the feeling of being entiteled to be here among some really professional and skilled photografers .
I am thankful for every single comment I get regarding techniques and washed out skies , but I am not skilled enough to "polish" my photos ( I consider it an advantage because what I see and sense first in a photo has nothing to do with technical skills )- and I am also hesitating of doing too much , because then it is not " my picture " and the way I experienced it . When the sky is washed out , it IS washed out . I try to put meaning to my photos in my notes - also when they are not " eye-catchers " in order to tell what is on my mind - and to share with others the pleasures I find in things and nature.
All the best to you !
Dorte.

Some anger you've had to put up with sometime? At least we get your statement and I totally agree.. And your photos often need no notes their just plain beautiful. About this photo: I like what I like :) No, just kidding:)
Nice curve of the road, the DoF created by the plough rows in the field, small details far in the back. The small pole draws attention too much I think. There's a shadow on the road, but I don't know where from.

Hi Pablo,
Superb use of the road to take the eye well into the frame, with good lighting and shadow effects. The composition is well balanced, the clarity of detail very fine. I agree wholeheartedly with your note; it is up to the critiquer to write about the merits of the photo. On the other hand, I believe it quite in order for the photographer posting to mention some defect, flaw or issue with which he or she has struggled with concerning the posted shot. Well captured.

Hello Pablo
I sort of understand what made you take this shot. The sweeping curve of the road & the forrows joining at a point - this leads our view directly to the centre of the frame. I think the side light helps the picture with the long shadows & highlighting the autumn colours.
Now regarding your note - it's a strong one my friend! But I do feel that the photographer should give an idea of what made him take a photo, the circumstances etc. etc. But yes if the idea is to self-promote, there's no justification at all. Yes & one more thing..I do look forward to your critiques since they are constructive

Hmm, few days without new images and two uploads in a short time ;). I agree with you, I prefer as some other describe own feelings about the photo I`ve made. But we must be tolerant, it is not as big sin as many others ;)

Hi Pablo,
The tiny size of the golden flares of autumn color make that mountain seem very tall; assuming those flares are trees. The foreground is an interesting mix of straight and curved lines. The shade of blue you show in the sky indicates to me great clariy of color and the filmy cloud detail, good light mangement.
As to the self critique, there is a clear and strong statement, "You may not critique your own photo," when one opens their own photo. I can see you have a valid point; although it's something that hasn't bothered me before. I seem to learn from all critques. I don't think I self critique perhaps because I have so much information I want to share about the setting.

Hello Pablo,
Lines, lines and more lines! Curved lines on the road, vertical lines on the fields, diagonal lines on the mounts. This combination results very well and creates a nice pattern inside the photo's patterns. The light and colours and the view you show us are very nice but these lines really attracted my eyes.
Have a nice WE.

Hi again, Pablo. I don't like this one as much as the old shed, not at all, although it's got a breathtaking perspective and nice light and shade. But I would like to say that the type of note you are talking about in your own note I have not often seen. When I have, it hasn't really bothered me. I much prefer that 'I liked the way the blah blah blah...' type of thing to nothing at all. Sometimes a member will say he or she liked something about the subject of the photo, which is not the same as liking something about his or her own photo. Me, I like to read something interesting about an unusual building or scene, or a little story about the taking of the shot, preferably with a bit of humour. The thing I like the least is the mere reproduction of the lyrics of a poem or song, left to stand by themselves as the note.
I think one of the things one has to be tolerant of is that many people are writing in a foreign language and their intended meaning may not come across with perfect clarity.
Anyway, good to read something discussable, debatable!
Regards,
Andrew

There's some movement in your picture I like.
In order to get admiration, I think you have by yourself to be proud of your own work. Art is communication. And if it communicates well to others, you have reached the goal. Too often this communication becomes a self-communication and so it's a poor job.
I like your work because it communicates to me. So you are an artist Pablo.

Yes Pablo I committed that very crime in my last post and was a bit overwhelmed by the amount of replies that repeated my comments either to reinforce my thoughts or that they had come to the same conclusions. Now your photo, excellent leading lines and strong diagonal elements in the composition along with good colour make this an eye catching image. The building at the end of the road is a good focal point also. Thanks for sharing.

Hi, Pablo.
The message here is clear and understandable. I just hope your comments on other pictures are so strong and meaningfull. About the shot, all I can say is LOVELY, the curving road, low northern sun giving texture to things and the clear air, stronger with the usage of the polariser are simply perfect. I like that there is so much detail even in such a small format and I wish I could see this photo in full resolution.

Hi Pablo, Nice work. This road seems to curve just as the road in my shot you've critiqued lately. Only mine does disappear around a corner and yours vanishes in to the distance.
Real great depth, it seems really far away in the distance, very small houses. Great. Lovely autumn colour on the hill in the distance, I like that one. Also the lines in the field seeming to come together witht he road in the distance.
Full of colours and good sharpness.

Hi Pablo!
I admit, I've opened this one only because of the tittle ;)) but the picture catched my eye for a while... so only at the end I read the note... I confess, I am guilty ;)) And to the one that confess the half of penitence is forgiven ;)) Well, this is my point of view: I like the grain (generaly speaking), (film or digital it doesn't matter) sometimes I also add it to the photo to acchieve that look that I wanted to... but at TE are also people that didn't like the grain... they call it NOISE, (oh I hate that word) so in a special case like that I specify in my note that I liked that sort of "error" and the people finally see also other things beside noise. But mostly I write what I like in a photo because I don't know what to write... ;)))
Have a nice weekend,

Olá Pablo, this is a very curious note and a surprising one from you. I understand your point of view and I mostly agree with it, but I'm not so harsh as you are. We have so many and diferent personalities here...I tend to accept each ones goals and if someone likes to selfcriticize the photo posted, I will accept it and contribute with my own opinion.
About this image: Roads are allways great to give dynamism and perspective to landscapes and this curve in foreground is no exception. I mainly like the graphism of the lines on the field and the autumn colors (the yellow ones) of the trees on the hill. The sky is very attractive as usual in your images.
