The first snow of the winter, in Rogaland, fell on December 19th 2009. By early January the temperatures had plummeted to a low of minus 16C, and the fjords and edges of the sea froze. These ice crowns are caused by the differences between high tide and low tide. The tidal movements here, at the innermost reaches of Hafrsfjord, are relatively small, and the wind-speeds had been minimal, resulting in small 'crowns' of ice.

What a beautiful and fascinating sight! You caught it in a favourable light which emphasizes the beauty and noteworthyness of the scenery in a wonderful way. I also like the colours and the whole composition here - and the technical quality of the picture! Great!
By the way, Welcome to TrekEarth!
Greetings from still winterly Germany!

It's not often that we see frozen sea Amelia! For me it's an amazing phenomenon, and you have captured it well. The composition is good, the colours clear and natural. You have used the low winter sun well, to show the crowns better. And, the photo is perfectly leveled!

it is interesting to see the frozen sea and the long shadow at 13:09, but it is probably normal in Norway during the winter.
Only ice "crown" disturb calmness of this photo. Excellent composition and peaceful color.
All the best, Boris

I've just been doing a spot of idle browsing and I came across your gallery. People here must be blind not to have been startled by this one. Even the thumnail is impressive, but the full-size picture is stunning!
The exposure is perfect, the colours beautiful and the lighting on the ice, the foreground rocks and the overhanging branches is superb. Excellent sharpness too.
And a fine informative note to accompany this beautiful photograph.
