I believe I once commented in a note that the winterstorms would be bad this year....well we really haven't had any visible ones yet. All the hurricane force winds have been at night.
Unlike the more known storms that hit eg. the US, the storms in Norway are not strong enough to cause the same chaos. Either that or we simply are a more hardy people!
I took this photo from atop a small hill at Oelberg just outside Sola. We have had strong gale force winds the last week and with hurricane force winds in the night. After the worst wind and rain had died away I took the chance of bringing my camera out.
Fighting through strong gales, sea spray and the search for the right wave crashing moment i was rewarded with this photo.
This place is considered the best place to witness storms, the big rock you can see just off shore is said to be just big enough to stop all but waves larger than 10 meters... so seing this wave crashing in gives a good impression.
The photo is heavily cropped and part of a much larger view, but it is only this area that i consider of any interest.
I hope you like it.

It is very powerful how the sea leaps out and the birds seem to recoil away from it. Beautiful texture on the water and the sky is good too.

Hi Odd Jarle,
Power of huge wave is easily recognizable from your excellent shot. Working B&W increase its value with many birds are on air. Congratulations. I wish you a very good week-end.

Very nice picture. I love those scenes.
Maybe a little more light on the water would give a nice touch to your picture.

A very lively picture, with the waves and the seagulls. I am not sure I like it better in B&W rather thn in colors, but it sureley increases the dramatic effect.
All the best,

This is a typical maritime winter scene with fantastic dark atmosphere. I can imagine how freezing was the wind and how wet you got, to get this photo but you were rewarded as besides the wave crashing on this rock you also got the extra to have all this birds flying by at the time you took the photo.
It's strange to see them with such a storm flying by over the sea, normally here in Portugal when there is a storm at the sea and group in safe land, normally on the rooftops.

Just great. The gulls fighting the wind gives the right impression. I like B&W. And the wave...

Good work Odd Jarle, not only displaying the strong sea but the gulls flying around there is a fine well included detail. Choice of bw seems right for this compo by the shore of the sea.

Whay I find most interesting in this photo is the flock of gulls above the stormy sea. I think your gulls are hardier too; ours all land in the soccer field beside my house to wait out the storm. Even when you walk right up to them with a camera, they are reluctant to take flight, they just step briskly away. HLJ, Pat

Hei gjenn Oddi,
Nice and windy scene. Seems to be a lot of fish in the area, the seagulls are gathered... I think that you did a good job with the composition of this image, and you've captured great movement in this as well. TFS.

Impressive photo! BW is a good choise to strengthen the photo. Waves and Birds are so good.

the black and white really seems to embrace the rest of your composition ... it adds to the dramatic almost menacing nature of all the elements ... focuses me on the textures. ... wonderful shot.
kiwi_explorer (12209) 2007-02-10 5:12
You've captured that wild sea perfectly. There must have been a school of fish judging from those birds flying around. The use of B&W is quite appropriate to emphasize the gloomy weather. Well composed ... good job!

Hi Odd Jarle,
in this black&white version with the waves over the rocks and the doves you captured my personal impression of the North Sea (is it also North Sea in Norway?). I like this rough pictures, the ocean is always a challenge and lovely. Thanks for the idea of scale in your note.

the raging waves are clearly detailed and composed. BW choice is apt!

Hello Odd Jarle,
A lot of my photos are of the ocean and sea life.....anything associated with water doesn't get passed my lens without me taking a photo! So for this photo I would like to thank you. An amazing composition with great clarity and most of all movement and emotion!

Hallo Odd Jarle
the waves, the birds look awesome, you captured them nicely
and very conversion to BW, the contrast is excellent.
btw, I am going to Oslo 5-8 april, could you give any tips of the place ?
Davidwh (3662) 2007-02-14 17:02
Hi Odd Jarle,
Its been a while and good to drop in and see you again.I like this one out of your latest a lot.The strength of the raging sea is well dipicted with the splash of spray, the cold low light, the threatening sky and dark cold rock.A great choice for B&W.Well done and take care.

Belle prise des mouettes qui dance au dessus de cette vague en colére, douce lumiére, jolie présentation

Hi Odd Jarle,
this is such an impressive picture, sea and it's power..
Beautiful, i like a lot this view.
branley (3681) 2007-02-18 5:50
a very dramatic image showing clearly the power of the sea and mother nature. Good to see it in B&W, maybe a little dark but that probably increases the effect. A fine capture, well done.

Tres belle photo avec ces oiseaux qui semblent êtres attirés par cette vague.
