Waiting for the ferryman
A desolated place along our largest and longest river Glomma. A little place called Glennetangen – a fine place to wait for the ferryman to take you to the other side.
Being there alone on a grey, windless and silent day in November where the clear water of the summer have turned into a brownish soup, I also come to remember the story of the more mythological ferryman: Charon:
In Greek mythology, Charon was the ferryman of Hades who carried souls of the newly deceased across the river that divided the world of the living from the world of the dead. A coin to pay Charon for passage, usually an obolus or danake, was sometimes placed on or in the mouth of a dead person. Those who could not pay the fee, or those whose bodies were left unburied, had to wander the shores for one hundred years.

Have a fine day out there ;-)

Hey Jack,
This photo has a ton of ambient. It is thoughtfully composed, with a phenomenal subject. The gray nature is beautiful, yet foreboding. PP is elaborate as always. Lastly, the frame is very fitting.
Fine stuff.
Best regards.

i like the dark colours very much as well as that you place the wooden house in the corner giving more space to the river...you're really lucky you were there lonely and enjoy the autumn!

Hi Jack
The idea was same with my subject but with different weather.
Nice view indeed, very well framed but you should post a second one with the ferry :)
Cheers.

A very dull sleepy day, nothing is moving. You captured very well the atmosphere in a very well composed picture, which gives space to the flat water.

Interesting and effective application of the rule of thirds. The large void on the right contrasts well with the red hut. Would still be nice to have something small and colorful on the water. Fine work. Regards,

Hello Jack,
Bien vu !

Sorry about this but i have to take this in swedish but when you start talking aboy the ferryman it's hard not mention Charon or karon, I started to translate the poem of Carl Michael Bellman but gave up.

Hei Jack
Excellent off-centred composition. I like the way the path draws the eye to the red hut. The contrast between the sharp, colourful structures and hazy water is lovely. The D90 is a good toy isn't it ?

Hi, Jack. Is there a better picture to illustrate the sadness of autumn? The large expanse of water on the right is flat and dull and the hills in the background seem to vanish in the haze. Fortunately, there is that red cabin on the left to give light and contrast in this grey landscape. It is as if the wharf separated two different worlds.
Have a nice evening,
Philippe.

Hello Jack

Hi Jack, The composition is really very good, I love the position of the red wood house & it adds some great colour, there is a great reflection of the hut & the view down the walk way drags the eye into the shot, the expanse of gray water is so still, TFS, kind regards Wilson.

Ah Jack,

Hi Jack,
The photo is very well composed. This is proof that even on a dull day, in a seemingly dull place, it is possible to create great shots.
Just like Said I miss a post of the ferry.

Hello Jack, The pontoon like line of prospect supported well by its red hut and are reflection shows l' ideally; autumn and its mysterious fog, history of the frontier runner, although morbid, is instructive, and sticks well with the posted image, the force of foreground gives the must to this image, image which profit from a break point which is lost in the distance of the Glomma river, sincerely ..........Bonjour Jack,
