Photographer’s Note

The Oseberg Ship in the Viking Ship Museum, Oslo. This ship was originally buried under an enormous burial mound in southern Norway. The bodies of two women, one old and one young, were found buried with the ship, as well as a variety of artifacts and remains of many different animals. The reason for the burial of the women, and exactle who they were, remains a mystery, although theories abound.

The ship was buried in 834 (according to dendrochronological datings) and is 22m long. Most likely it was used as a pleasure craft for royalty and shorter voyges, as is was not built to withstand storms on the high seas.

As for the photo, it is a merger of three separate shots.
