I came to notice that this is my #700th post at TE and had the idea to use a photo from the same day and place as my first post; A little valley, Hedalen, along E16 north of Oslo.
My first post in sep 2003 was a detail from the house used by the local priest (..and my first critic to recieve was from my friend DIDI (Said) whom I later on have met two times for small photosessions down in South of France).
Also later in the year I used another photo displaying the whole building.
Today I present the old Hedalen Stave Church of the place - one of the smaller ones, but with an interesting history/legend:
There is a legend about the church; during the Black Death in the middle of the 14th century Hedalen was depopulated, and the valley became a wilderness. A hunter one day shot an arrow after a bird, but instead of hitting his prey, it missed and struck the bell. Then, there he found the church, standing in the middle of the dense forest.
As the hunter believed this must be a church for huldra or other supernatural beings, he took his flint and steel and threw it over the church. This was something believed to seize property from huldra, and so he wanted to prevent the church from disappearing. On the place where the steel fell, a farm was later built which still has the name Ildjarnstad (Firesteel).
In the church the hunter shot a bear which had made its lair by the altar. The skin from this bear still hangs on the wall of the sacristy.
Truth or tale? In a neighbouring valley, Vassfaret, there is a small national park, and this national park is made specifically as a breeding ground for bears, although in recent years the bears prefer to do business in other landscapes.
Added material: The interior of the Stave Church

Double compliments!!! Firstly for your 700th post and finally for the picture itself.
The superb sky is, from my POV, the best in the picture.

Congratulations on joining us the happy few above #700, welcome !
A nice idea to use this opportunity to get back to the roots, you have here an atrractive subject, it gets quite dramatic here with those grey clouds that have nearly the same color than the tombstones, overall there is a rich palette of greys in this image !
Have a nice day,
isabela_sor (47748) 2006-12-11 5:31

ChrisJ (112285) 2006-12-11 5:36
Congratulations on your 700th! I like the partial desaturation, which makes the graveyard & steeple look more like Transylvania than Norway. Needless to say, spooky & atmospheric. Superb sharpness & repetition of the tombstones. Tfs!
Lix (0) 2006-12-11 5:36
good, another beautiful shot!
I like the contrast between the green and this grey sky, well done!
bantonbuju (51815) 2006-12-11 5:42

the effect of the sky here is spectacular, this is a great scenery for some historical movie about worriors, first years of christianity in scandinavia, or so...

jinju (14265) 2006-12-11 6:17
incredibly strong and dramatic shot, that sky is a stunner. I think that this could work well in b/w as the modo is there to carry it off.
Oh, congrats on 700!

Bonjour, mon ami Jack,

Hi Jack. Congrats on your 700th TE anniversary, it is an impressive milestone that few have passed yet. Good idea to go "back to the roots" with this one, and a nice post-work to accentuate the mood provided by the cloudy cover above the church and quiet graveyard. This is a fine example of where a centered framing works ideally, and I quite like the photo. I appreciate your contributions to TE, and I am sure that the Rotterdam meeting was not the last time that we saw each other and got the chance to shoot some photos together.
gilou530 (34) 2006-12-11 12:50

Hi, Jack. You're a real pillar of TE. 700 pictures, added to your more than 10,000 critiques, that's a milestone. Congratulations on that.
I like the composition very much here with the tombstones that lead us in a kind of triangle to the church. The only part of green is in the churchyard and I think it provides excellent contrast with the rest of the picture. The sky is very dramatic and allows the church spire to stand out very well against it.
I've got a question here: how much of the picture is desaturated?
cessy (13647) 2006-12-11 19:03
wow... 700th post !! congrats
and this one is great picture
so gothic and dramatic
hitesh (594) 2006-12-11 22:37

Congratulations for Your 700th post! You have put a really big work to achieve such a number of photos! I like Your idea to return to the roots and roll a big circle in your journey! Very nice place and fine, almost monochrome graphic. Good job!
miuky (3335) 2006-12-12 3:02
Nice drama above, and silent ground...
As I'm living on the Adriatic coast, with mild temperatures in winter, with the snow every 20 years, I'm afascinated by those very much leaning roofs, mostly covered on this kind of fish skin(sorry for my english), that you show perfectly here...
vincz (19113) 2006-12-12 3:31
Congratulation on your 700th! This is a great picture with a dramatic sky. Almost all black and whit except for the grass and a little bit of the sky! There is definitely a very personal touch in this picture.

Congratulations on your 700th post, Jack. You work seems to me to have developed a strong sense of authoity and certaintiy, since your earl days. You have developed a recognisable personal style.I like the sharness, cleaness and geometic precission of this one, all this is reinforced by the lovely ecconomy of color.

The sky is superb and the pov very good.
Very well done!
danyy (0) 2006-12-12 13:44
rbcy1974 (20758) 2006-12-12 14:59
Congratulations on your 700th post.
Really beautiful, the environment is quite haunting with this menacing sky. Excellent contrast, nice greyish tones. While I understand the use of the leaves as a framing tool, however I think that without them it would look very interesting too.
JCG (35129) 2006-12-12 15:57
Congratulations for this 700th publication. It is superb, I like very much the image processing used. Qualities of the photograph are undeniable. A very beautiful composition, still cheer.

pablominto (53746) 2006-12-14 1:56
Being your image #700 I think this one deserves to pass the 100 points line!
But also because it is an interesting image, the fact it is dating back a few years shows in tech stuff but the composition is very attractive!
Congratulation on the achievemant!
sebcz (2345) 2006-12-15 8:34
Wonderful shot! I also read the note attentively, 700, wow. Some time has passed, hasn't it?
Keep up good work!
bakes888 (18499) 2006-12-15 14:12
Hi Jack. Great photo, great story (true or otherwise). I love the POV and the framing although the spire does disappear into the tree. Your PP of the colour has given the shot a sombre mood which suits the subject well. Thanks for sharing.
dorte_s_t (2287) 2006-12-17 3:55
Hello . Jack .
Very interesting photo . My eye can hardly tell me if it is in colours all over or if it is both coloured and black and white .
I was really fascinated by the tale !
Again it is up to one's imagination to decide : is it true or a tale ........?
All the best to you !
sabyasachi1212 (19779) 2006-12-21 14:06
This must be a very nostalgic. I mean 700 posts in 3 years, thats incredible, a feat that would be hard to beat. And to top it all, you have made such valuable contribution to the site. The desaturation simply works wonders here. Great job.
With Greetings from India
premels (2400) 2007-01-07 9:27
Very impressive, threathening greys for this color picture. It seems the sky is painted with coal. Congratulation and many thanks for the many wonderfull pictures you post on TE.
I wish you the best for 2007

Very good composition
cherryripe (21033) 2007-01-08 10:24
Godt nytt år !
Very spectacular stavkirke which stands out so well against the dramatic cloudy sky. I like the idea of the leaves making a border although I would have just separated the top of the spire from the leaf.
