I was driving down Setesdalen in Aust-Agder, Norway when I decided to make a short stop by some old waterlocks. Just them a guy from the local authorities comes up to me and asks "Are you here to see the opening of the new locks?"
I had no idea this was happening then, he told me that an old steamer was going to come through as well.
So natuarally I stayed.
This was the most perfect shot I got of this steamer.
It is called D/S Bjoren
The steamer "Bjoren" was built at Akers Mechanical works in 1866, it was 52 feet long and had 14BHP engine. In 1897 the boat was extended with 6 feet and in 1914 it was further extended with 10 feet. It had a new boiler installed and new engine that produced 42BHP. This is the state it is in today. It is 68,9 feet long and weighs 26 tonnes.
In the early years "Bjoren" travelled at a place called Kilefjorden, but when a narrowtrack railroad was opened in 1896 it was moved to its present location in Byglandsfjord where it was in service until 1957.
In the 1920's busses took most of the traffic in the valley and eventually when a new road was built in the 1950's the traffic reasons for the steamer was gone.
The boat was put in storage, but in the 1970's a group of enthusiasts decided to make an attempt to preserve the boat.
The boat was restored at Drammen Shiprepairs A/S.
The engine runs like a clock and the hull is sturdy and safe. It is counted as a floating technical museum and is in regular use in the summer.
If you ever go to Setesdalen I advice you take a trip on this beautiful boat.
Photo has been cropped to remove some other small boats.
Enjoy.

Hello Odd Jarle,
A well composed image, nicely balanced and with good lines!
The distorted reflection and also the steam adds interest value, good foreground interest by the rocks...
And an interesting little boat of course, good movement into the frame!
Greetings,

Romantiv voyage, I like the pov and action - boat seems a bit small, but that adds to the intimacy of the moment....
Cheers
