This another picture from our recent trip on the Hurtigruten. The 'coastal express' is a fleet of 11 ships, one of which leaves Bergen everyday to travel the 12 day round trip to Kirkenes on the Russian border and back.
The first boat, the Vesteraalen, left Trondheim for Hammerfest in 1893, with the aim of improving communications and industry for the scattered coastal communities. With limited navigational aides in dangerous waters the 'postal' boat became established with Bergen becoming the most southerly port. The route extended northwards and Kirkenes was included in 1914. Tourism has always been part of the function of the fleet to supplement the freight and ferry services for the locals. The route is known as 'The world's most beautiful sea voyage'. The ships stop several times a day (and night) to deliver and collect cargo and load/unload passengers. The stops vary from 15 minutes to several hours and it is amazing to see the efficiency of the small fork-lift trucks that get into action as soon as the ship docks with its roll on/roll off facilities. Sometimes the harbour entrances are rather small and difficult to navigate. A few are exposed to open sea rather than the sheltered waters experienced most of the way. Two major storms led to aborted attempts at docking on two occasions. We were on the Finnmarken (built 2002) and unless we were were watching the storms (Force 12) it was not at all apparent that they were happening as the stabilisation system is so good.
This photo was taken between Havoysund and Hammerfest within the Arctic Circle and not far from the North Cape. A snow storm was blowing but the light filtered through. It is always exciting to see other ships from the fleet pass by. This one is the Vesteralen built in 1983.

The snowstorm brings an air of mystery to the composition; we wonder where this ship is heading for. You have composed the shot well with the ship heading on an oblique trajectory and well placed in the frame. I like the soft light and understated colours.

The winter scenery and especially this snow storm create here unique mood of the scene.
And I like also the way you composed the scene-just the ship and misty(created probably mostly by the snow) surrounding. It has something mysterious in itself.
Have a nice sunday

You've written a very interesting and informative note, so much so that it inspired me quickly to check out the Hurtigruten website. So was this the "Round Trip" from Bergen to Kirkenes? Did you have many opportunities to get off the ship and explore various places? You must tell me more!
Your photograph inspires me even more and the morning light, together with the falling snow, adds a wonderful and mysterious quality to the image, the ship appearing to sit in a pool of liquid silver and set against a wonderfully dark and sinister sky. And is that land or an iceberg in the distance on the right?
Gorgeous light and colours, perfect exposure and exquisite details and sharpness.

Finnmark is the only county in Norway i haven`t visited. A wonderful atmosphere and lighting in this shot. I can almost feel the cold air just looking to this fabulous shot. Very nice work:)

J'aime beaucoup la position du bateau dans l'image. On voit que la tempête de neige ne l’arrêtera pas . J'aime beaucoup le ciel très gris qui se mêle à la mer.

Gosh Ann this is full of atmosphere, what a brilliant shot. I get a real feel for the weather here. The slight vignette works very well and I love the play of light across the sea.
This is a trip I would like to do but I am not sure that a winter voyage would be my first choice!
Hope all is well with the family

Lovely storm shot here, Ann, and it looks like just a bit of sun was peeking out somewhere to create that nice warm glow in front of the ship. The effect is really cool and ethereal, combined with the misty surroundings and clever vignette. Nicely done.

Maybe this is not exactly what a paintng by Turner would have looked like if he had been alive today and travelled the Hurtigruten. But the hazy light, the reflections of the sun and the fine tones of gold and silver still make me think of some of his paintings. It's a fine and very enjoyable photo.

Your sister ship here on this "speedy route" looks very lonely here in this misty surrounding. Not really like the Flying Dutchman, maybe a Flying Norwegian. A very good picture anyway.

Ciao e buona settimana

Great! Fantastic view and fantastic light, this here we can feel the cold atmosphere of the snow storm
kasianowak (7321) 2014-04-07 2:40
I really like the misty light and delicate colours here. It makes me think of the journeys of the great Arctic explorers with big unknown lurking beyond the invisible horizon.

A good way to capture snow--using this massive ship as a background. I can see snowflakes against the black hull. very well done, tfs.

a shot that highlights the weather conditions and moody light. Dramatic and evocative, a fine image that captures the moment, I love the mood that is very well conveyed and felt by the viewer. My compliments also for the interesting notes!
photographer_sg (4410) 2014-04-07 10:43
that is a superb capture with great control of the exposure under what appears to be a difficult light condition. The oblique placement of the vessel with space to the left has given it excellent dynamism. The lovely light reflecting off the water and the fine details of the ship make for a fine visual experience.
Thanks for sharing and have a nice evening.

Un très bon cadrage sur ce bateau, les teintes amenée par le mauvais temps sont très subtiles.
Très belle lumière également.
williewhistler (15035) 2014-04-10 12:49
I do like the vignette effect and the moody atmosphere created by the snow storm and the little pool of sunlight in front of the vessel.
With the flag billowing and the ship well placed across the vertical corners there is also a good sense of movement created.
Kindest regards Les.
marina7 (8055) 2014-04-10 13:55
superb work! The light is the star of the picture, I can't even figure out where it comes from. The shimmering on the sea is fantastic and the overall misty atmosphere adds to the impression. Excellent composition and top quality.
Thanks and best wishes!

Wow, this is a great shot. It looks like something out of the Titanic movie. I love the muted light, the snow and that golden halo of light just in front of the ship. It's very atmospheric and beautifully realised. Jeez you get around don't you: Cuba, Route 66 and now the Arctic! My best friend used to work as a translator on one of these cruise ships (she's Norwegian but speaks many languages) and she always remarked on the diversity of people that she would meet on them. Good for you!
Thanks for sharing, have a lovely evening
sandpiper (6788) 2014-04-11 4:31
sounds like you enjoyed your trip a lot, despite the storms LOL. Can't imagine not noticing a force 12 storm!
Fine view of the ship in a snowstorm, good composition.

I love the magical light in which you've captured the Vesteralen, and the informative note. I had not heard of this particular voyage, but it has certainly intrigued me.

You used an interesting artifact on the sky with the grad filter
Very good lights control on the sea
The ferry gives an attraction to your composition
macjake (58992) 2014-04-17 9:34
who needs bright light right! haha
this is great, and we can see the snow falling in the blue areas of the ship.
hard to believe the captain could see very far into the distance, but i suppose thats what the radar is for.
love the darkening of the skyline at the top, was that natural or added after? looks great.
Waylim (25368) 2014-04-28 17:37
Excellent shot, Love the mood and the quality is really amazing considering the snow storm and all. so much details and we can see the snow falling so clearly, against the ship, as the sop is cover is heavy clouds bearing down on the sea.
Love the light manage to peak through and illuminated the water.
adores (39272) 2014-05-01 14:35
Great winter atmosphere with the snow falling! The light is really good also, we can almost feel the cold. It's a very good photo and I like the PP!

Your photo is superb as the narrative and poetic time. It is superbly realized.
A beautiful image not trivial!
