Going to Spitzbergen - the flight. Photo

Photographer’s Note

The flight north to Spitzbergen (in the neighbourhood of the Nort Pole) takes app. 4hr. from Oslo (had we gone south to IE Malaga, Spain, the flight time over Europe is 3,5 hr.).

This flight with SAS, DC8 started at 23.00 (11pm) with arrival 04.00 (4am) after a stop in Tromsoe on the mainland. During the flight some of the passengers took the opportunity to have a little chat with the captain. Not so unusual on some of the long domestic flights, at least not before 911.

This is in the end of May 2001. Pic. is scanned from papercopy, 300dpi, run through Neatimage. Quality is OK but not as good as wanted. Anyway, in the next days I will present you some few pics. from this travel, mainly from the Russian mining community on Spitzbergen: Barentsburg.

An interesting picture! Nothing much to comment about techniques but a great TE picture as it shows us, first hand, to go around the earth

Hello Jack,
Why showing this picture 4 years after the submission? Just because I'm planning a trip in the north... Probably to Rivaniemi, Nordkap, Tromsoe and Lofoten. And in the book they say that there is flight from Tromsoe to Spitzberg... Is this an interresting destination? I think yes, but I have to persuade my wife, my son have seen that there is soem white bear... so He want to go. Have you seen it when you was on it? What to do on the island? Do you have some good idea. There is not a lot of picture from the Spitzberg.
Also on the north of Norway can you give me some nice place to go. I plan to stop in Nordkap, Alta, Tromsoe and Lofoten. I will rent a car.
For the picture, it was a good time when we can go into the cockpit to talk with the pilot, I have been every flight, for my work because I built some aircraft part, but not only, just to see the view... so nice.
I have to search in my old paper picture, I have some nice view to scan.
