Kirkenes is the turnaround point for the Hurtigruten fleet of ships. This is the border area between Finnland and Russia and therefore sandwiched between two different time zones - Helsinki and Moscow. The Pasvikelva river forms part of the Russian border. There are about 5,000 inhabitants in this area which is south of the Arctic timeberline and therefore more fertile than the rest of the Finnmark coast. There are many Russians living there and many also come across the border to shop in Kirkenes. A trip took us to the official border crossing in a forest area near the river. There seemed very little activity going on although we did meet a small Norwegian patrol on skis.
Kirkenes was occupied by the Germans in June 1940 and a year later became part of the German assault on Murmansk in the Soviet Union. However, the offensive hardly advanced for the next three years. The town was bombed over 300 times. Kirkenes became the first place in Norway to be liberated by the Red Army.
This picture was taken near the border.

Looks mighty cold!! I like the point of view and the light and colours. Excellent detail to be observed in the icy cascades. The reindeer(?) warning sign adds a splash of contrasting colour and makes a good focal point. Thanks also for the very interesting note.

I have seen some half frozen waterfalls in China but never the whole whole ice wall like this one. Amazing view and well presented. The row of the trees on the top of the ice cascade adds odd contrast to the severe wintery landscape below. I like the little red sign with moose which is a cheerful bit of colors in the picture.
Thanks for sharing and enjoy your day

a WOW! shot this. I would love to see this close up, it looks amazing and so other worldly. The diagonal composition makes it all the more dramatic and enthralling and I love the line of trees atop the frozen falls. Stunning place and capture!
Enjoy your weekend - B.

Little bit a Greek name for the Norway place ;) Wonderful photo, it reminds me the Snow Queen's Kingdom. Thanks for so informative and useful note. I have been lived near the Finnish border in 1987, there is wonderful nature, fantastic sunsets, the clear air in the Karelian forests and the Vuoksa river.

Another fine and impressive photograph from your recent trip to Kirkenes! And a very interesting and informative note too.
I love the strong and bold diagonal composition, the bleak ice covered cliff face taking up the majority of the frame. Even although the cliff face is in relative shade, yet we still see excellent details within it and the picture is nicely lifted by the bright sky and trees above and the little triangle of sunlit snow at bottom left - to which our attention in cleverly drawn by the red road sign warning us of deer.
Funnily enough, I was at a camera club judging last night and the judge marked down quite a few pictures because of bright bits in the corners, stating that he thought they were "distracting" - but in this case I really think that little area of bright snow adds very much to a very pleasing composition.
As always, lovely light and colours, bang-on exposure and exquisite details and sharpness.

good use of the diagonals have given even more drama to an impressive winter scene with the red warning sign adding a nice splash of colour as well as giving a good sense of scale.
The colours are true and believable and clarity first rate as always.

Ciao e buon fine settimana

Une photo très intéressante et c'est vraiment merveilleux ces glaçons sur les rochers, on dirait une vraie chute. Il ne fallait surtout pas manquer cette photo.. Excellente présentation.

Another impressive composition. The ice looks so artistic that I am tempted to ask who made this installation. The rock and the trees on top of it make a very nice diagonal and the reindeer warning sign gives the view that little extra something.

The only thing here that shows that this is actually in Norway is the eye-catching elk warning sign. This is indeed very far away from Oslo... The massive layers of ice are very fine in this picture and the blue sky above makes the picture even better. How cold was it here?

Attractive frozen water patterns over the rocky cliff, a cascade of varying white patterns, with a line of trees above, and a moose or elk crossing.
Thanks for sharing, plus the historical note,

Great scene of this frozen waterfall in the Finmark. It looks really cold here.
And oh boy, how do I know about all those Russians crossing the border. The region where my in laws live in Finland is right at the border and the whole region is catering almost exclusively for the masses of Russians that cross the border every day, coming up from the region of St. Petersburg. Hotels, Shopping centers, Resorts, Casinos everything is in russian hands today.
have a great day

That's just wonderful in extreme temp, what a place Finland is in winter just gives me the shivers looking at this. This is quite hypnotic when the snow turns the cascading water into a sort of sculpture and shape all of their own and, unbelievably pretty colours too. Spot-on in every respect including the touch of bright vivid red.
The power of ice is respectable........
Great shot, Congrats

Wow. Just, wow! As the Americans say. This blows me away. Having seen snow once in my life up close, I feel like a child in a lolly shop with this photo. That water is frozen solid. Jeez nature is amazing. And I just love the little moose sign - again another novelty - contrasting beautifully with its red colours. This is a natural wonder Ann, thanks so much for sharing it with us.

Beautiful but it look so cold! However, it's a great image to look at on a hot day in Las Vegas like today with prediction of over 100 degrees. Good pov and nice details even the icicles. Well done, tfs.
SnapRJW (31625) 2014-05-27 3:23
Hello Ann - A fascinating note and judging from the conditions here it is of little wonder that the Germans progressed much here... trying conditions even when you are dresses fed and adequately sheltered!
But what a beautiful shot. The light could not be much better with the merest hint of warmth to enliven the scene. The frozen falls is a wonderful sight and well presented in this composition. I like the line of trees at the top off the frame they add to the conteaxt and my impression of the landscape.
kasianowak (7501) 2014-05-28 7:29
This is really impressive. Again, just like in the image with the boat, you created a powerful sense of scale here by including the road sign which also adds a sense of place as it shows one of the symbols of Norway.
Have a nice evening
Gigidusud (17673) 2014-06-11 14:10
Great capture to the icy cascades with nice perspective and good light management. Splendid graphic effect, well done!
macjake (60596) 2014-06-14 16:24
this is brilliant!
what a subject to show and to photograph.
I think its great that you visited these places, rather than staying in Helsinki the entire time or most of the time. Thats fantastic.
so funny to see the Moose crossing sign sticking out of the snow. and that cascading frozen water is the kicker!!
wicked shot Ann
ikeharel (62111) 2014-07-14 7:24
Good evening Ann,
A fabulous sight of the frozen waterfall. The warning sign is for the Deers to be carful from the cascade, or maybe for the tourists to be aware of a hiding per under the falling ice... my humor only.
Superbly managed white on WB camera set, and good clarity.
Lovely frozen scene.
