This is another picture from our recent trip on the Hurtigruten into the polar waters of Northern Norway. Having spent some time exploring the town on foot we returned to the ship and watched activity on the dock from the deck. Whatever time of day or night the Hurtigruten ships very efficiently dock, unload, load and cast off on time. Time in dock can vary between 15 minutes and several hours. Further information regarding the 'coastal express' can be found in my previous posts.
Hammerfest claims to be the most northernmost town in the world although there are smaller settlements further north.

Hi Ann,a very original pic from your trip on the nord,an essential composition made by tis diagonal so well exposed to take the best white and the snowflakes with the best detail too, very well done! Have a nice weekend and thanks,Luciano

Oooh, this one is just a bit scary for me what with my acrophobia (not vertigo, to be correct) - just how easy would it be for that fellow squatting down on the slippery snow, pulling on a heavy hawser, to end up sliding into the icy water below?
That aside, this is a fabulously taken shot with wonderfully simple and striking composition. Two huge contrasting triangles - the white snow and the dark sea - splitting the frame diagonally and with the only real colours being in the man and the ropes which lead to him from the bottom left corner. And with the main subjects selectively lit by a shaft of sunlight, also running diagonally across the frame.
Gorgeous light and colours, perfect exposure and exquisite details and sharpness.
P.S. Sorry I've not been too active over the past few days here - still reeling from having won the annual nature competition trophy at the camera club - largely due to my red squrrel picture which got a 20/20! :o)

C'est une très belle composition, bien cadrée avec la séparation par la diagonale.
La scène avec ses détails, est intéressante; la couleur jaune donne un bel éclat à l'ensemble.

like your originality and use of the diagonal to create something both fascinating and compelling. Wonderful use of the light and yellows to add that little something brighter than the snow as way of contrast. Works superbly. Well done!
Have a good weekend - B.

I like this clever and attractive omposition very much. You managed a perfect diagonal between the corners, dividing the picture in a black and a white half with fine colours and human presence between them. I an very impressed by the superb simplicity of this photo.

Ciao e buon fine settimana

Excellent composition ! I really like the square format, divided in two equal parts : water and dock. The yellow man and the yellow rope are perfectly placed (i love how the rope underlines the diagonal.
Good job !

Le cadrage est très original avec les cordes jaunes dans la diagonale séparant l'image en deux zones contrastées.

I really like the POV you chose for this scene - it created quite original result. The snow covered shore divides the composition at interesting angle and proportion and the yellow rope enhances the split. The man working at the end of it adds not only strong human element to the image but also thanks to his bright clothes contrasts very much with the white background.
Great idea for capturing this scene and very well executed.
Thanks for sharing and enjoy your day

I think you got perfect colours on this. Yellow safety clothing and rope. And strong contrast between snow and dark water. Diagonal from bottom left to top right makes a strong composition. And high viewpoint adds to originality too.

it was not cold enough in England! A very good picture with the general diagonal separating the snow in the shadow and the water just lighted, undelined by the yellow rope leading to the man in the same color.
We can guess it was still snowing.
Have a good WE

I like the way how you put simple elements together creating superb composition and strong diagonal with graphism value. The contrast in colour and shapes is so eye catching! You saw this well, it would have been so easy to walk past and a few steps either way and this would not have worked, you have a good eye. Nice shot, I like it!! Congrats

A perfectly composed picture with this yellow rope and green man on the diagonal line between black water and white snow. A given picture!

Intéressante image et scène, grand contraste des couleur noir et blanc en diagonale, le jaune dans la lumière ajoute un éclat de couleur agréable, belle réalisation

this is a superb composition with a really effective use of the diagonal. The details of the snow brought out superbly with the ropes and the brightly dressed sailor (?) providing excellent colours.
Thanks for sharing this beautiful picture.
Have a great new week ahead.

Interesting, less serene, image of harsh daily life in Norway. I like the composition along the yellow diagonal line. The snowflakes in the darker half and the footprints on the right provide eye-catching detail.

Sorry, I missed this, but am so glad that I delved into the archives. It is a splendid shot for its excellent crisp details and its fine diagonal composition. There is no doubt about the wintery conditions!!
I love how the only colours in the shot link so well and, of course, the focal person is so strongly placed.
Have a great day,

My goodness that looks a dangerous job, one slip on the ice and snow and you are in that cold sea.
Splendid Pov, the bright yellow ropes of the boat and his florescent jacket stand out well. Boy do's it look cold!
photoray (13981) 2014-05-02 7:09
From the thumbnail view I thought this was a steep mountain slope, and was pleasantly surprised to view the snowy dock and cast off rope instead.
Thanks for sharing,

Better late than never! I agree with everything that John has said (apart from winning a competition!) For me it's the tight composition and the slash of colour across an otherwise monochrome frame that makes this so effective. Good work.
mesutilgim (96260) 2014-05-03 23:57
I missed this nice capture in your gallery. Perfect pov and very good pictorial geometry.
A good sample, how a good photographers eye can see everywhere a "photogenic" theme !
TFS and have a nice weeekend

I like the simplicity of the shot, its graphic quality. The strong diagonal line and the yellow, white and grey are a good combo. I also enjoy the parallel lines of rope, pipe and footprints as well as the man being well placed in the frame.

bellissima diagonale, sottolineata dalle linee gialle e dall'uomo dello stesso colore.
Gran bello scatto.

I love the composition that cut the photo diagonally. Great daily life shot of docking the boat. Well done with good colors, light and sharpness.
Have a nice weekend,
