History

In about 1880 the first proper driven tugs appeared on the Rhine which developed more speed and needed less crew. The Pieter Boele was built in 1893 by the P.Boele shipyard in Holland and was named Wacht am Rhein VIII. She was fired by a coal fired boiler and powered by a compound steam engine developing some 300SHP and was specifically designed to operate in the area's of the river where strong currents predominate. The steering and control gear behind the funnel gave little forward view, but has the advantage of allowing an unrestricted view of the towed vessel.

Throughout her long working life she had a number of owners and name changes and the period between 1924 and 1957 many significant alterations were made to her appearance and power plant. In 1972 she was renamed Pieter Boele, after her builder, and she now resides in the Prins Hendrik Maritime Museum in Dordrecht

Here, a little piece of the Dutch Steam Society

The invention and development of the steam engine was the driven force behind the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century.
The steamship was a natural part of this development and represents an important period in our cultural history.
We are a small group of enthusiasts who cherish this part of our history and wish to preserve it for future generations.

Every one of us is familiar with the impressive funnels and loud whistles of these vessels that once plied our harbors and rivers.

They deserve to be treated as part of our maritime heritage.
The purpose of our association "Vereniging Stoomvaart" is to preserve these ships and the related steam engineering skills.
To restore these vessels to their original specifications and outward appearance is an enormous task.

The "Vereniging Stoomvaart" number about 20 members" who try to keep 25 ships under steam.

During maritime events these steamships are there to be admired in full splendor.

Our steamships participates in many events and are there, in full splendor, to be admired.
And visitors are invited on board te experience the bygone days of steam in the engine room.
Completely restored and meeting modern safety requirements, the again steam the Dutch waterways.

It was not easy to get this information about the Pieter Boele and the other Steam tug boats. My father was a captain of such a boat, I took an urly shot of this subject with the canon d 350. This one is taken with the canon d40 I hope you enjoy the shot.
