Sugar City, at Halfweg (pop. 2,330), about 6 km west of Amsterdam and 6 km east of Haarlem. The name Halfweg, which translates as "halfway," comes from its location... exactly halfway between these two cities.
In 1632, the Haarlemmertrekvaart, a canal from Amsterdam to Haarlem, opened for passenger traffic by trekschuit (towed barges). At the halfway point the passengers needed to disembark and change boats.
A towpath was then laid along the canal, and this route became the Haarlemmerweg. From 1904 to 1957 Halfweg was a stop on the Amsterdam-Haarlem-Zandvoort electric streetcar.
The first sugar factory at this location became operational in 1863, but It shut down after a few years. Then the N.V. Suikerfabriek Holland opened. It became part of the Centrale Suiker Maatschappij, the Central Sugar Company. Part of the factory were the former headquarters of the Watercouncil Rijnland. This building, called the Gemeenlandshuis Swanenburg, dates back to 1645 and housed production kettles until 1950. The factory definitely closed in the 1990's.
Sugar City is presently nearing its final stages : offices, a mega-cinema and all kinds of public facilities to make as much money as freaking possible, as usual, are scheduled on the premises. The only good thing is that this site is part of the European Route of Industrial Heritage, therefore the factory can't be demolished to make room for more yuppie condos...

Hi Fulvio.
I like these warm orange paints, well-coupling with intense blue sky.
I like the nice water's reflection too.
Well done.
Best regards.
Bobo.

Hallo Fulvio,
Groet, Henk

Hi Fulvio
I am amazed at the quality of light you are able to capture. Excellent front lighting with the sky remaining fairly dark. Well done indeed this is a stunning shot.
Phil

Ciao Fulvio,
nell'architettura industriale si trovano spesso spunti per fare delle belle foto come hai fatto tu. Molto bello l'edificio rosso mattone che contrasta con un cielo azzurro intenso .
molto belli i riflessi sull'acqua.
ottimo lavoro
Giorgio

Ciao Fulvio, bell'architettura industriale, magnifici colori e ottimi riflessi, bravo, buona domenica, ciao Silvio

Hi buddy,

I'll have a wonderful sunday thinking how great is photography seeing this image :) Serious, I really like your photo work here. The warm light coming the left against the intense blue sky is what makes this image a pleasant seen. You please keep biking in those spring afternoons, ok? Great job indeed...and thank you for your nice words on my last post.
TC,
Carlos

hey, there you are, DON! :))

wonderful, wonderful, my friend! the pic seems quite unusual for you (the content), but i like it. the buildings appear almost hanging in some blue universe. floating... and the light is incredible (warm). by the way, the factory building reminds me a bit of some soho artist lofts. maybe that's an idea the red-hats should play with? turn it into an artist paradise meanwhile preserving its historic image (something similar was done at Mass Mocca in North Adams, Mass).

cheers from across the ocean, Fulvio!
having a beer to your health right now

Hi Fulvio,

groet Jaap

Hi, Fulvio -

Well, the sky color looks a little odd (on my monitor, anyway), but overall the colors are good, and strong. You captured the shimmering effect of the vertical lines on the left very well. And the bits of green are a nice touch, too. Interesting construction of the water space.

Best,
Dan

Again... another image where the lighting makes the picture. The composition is great and colors superb.

I took some pictures last weekend with good lighting in the small community of Monmouth, Oregon USA and seeing your picture inspires me to select, process and upload one. The sticking point, of course, is finding one interesting enough. :)

Hi Fulvio,
Indescribable color! You have captured this tremendous light in the background of dark sky with the good framing.
Stunning shot!
Have a nice day, Hisashi

Fulvio, what a mix of old and new, I love it, and the lighting you have captured is fantastic, I love this late afternoon light. Here in the "New World" when we first made sugar we used it to make rum, a real essential of life...

Hello Fulvio,

John

Hello Fulvio. I like the glow of the diagonal light on the architecture. Stunning sharpness of the image. Pristine reflection and saturated sky. Well done and thanks for sharing. Jusni

sorry to be late for this Sugar party, hope there's some cake left :)
I'd say this is one of your best, Fulvio. thanks to TE (you and Henk in particular) I've grown to appreciate and love light, and I've learned to see what difference light makes, like here. the steel blue and polished sky, rich organge and red - funny how this industrial scene mirrors some of your Wild Wild West shots, but I guess it's the light - again - that makes them special. I don't say that too often, but I'd really like to have such photo in MY portfolio. love it.

take care,
Kristine
