Another wonderful day in The Lowlands : about 74F. and nothing but... sunshine!
So, I jumped on my mountain bike real early and by 9.00 am. I was in Haarlem.
This is one of the city's most famous trademarks : De Adriaan windmill.
De Adriaan was built on the foundations of the Goevrouwetoren, or Goede Vrouwtoren (Goodwife Tower), a tower that used to be part of the city's defences. Towers were located on the river Spaarne, on each side, to defend Haarlem from possible attacks over water. The Goevrouwetoren was demolished in 1778 to make way for the windmill, as it proved to be no longer useful in its original role. The city border had moved to the north, and building on the foundations of the old tower would make it easy to get the windmill as high as possible, which would help in catching wind. De Adriaan was officially opened on May 19, 1779.

The man behind the project was Adriaan de Booys, an industrial producer from Amsterdam. He bought the Goevrouwetoren and the land around it from the municipality of Haarlem on April 24, 1778. He had to increase the strength of the tower's foundations and added extra wooden supporting poles for his windmill. The new tower stuck out above the city: the highest point of the mill is about 34 meters above the water level of the Spaarne.

De Booys was granted permission to build a windmill that would produce cement, paint, and tan. The latter is basically oak bark. Once processed it can be used to tan hides. The windmill was built under supervision of miller Henricus Ruijsch from Waddinxveen. De Booy earned the concession to be the sole producer of cement in the city for 25 years.

De Booys, sold it to Cornelis Kraan in 1802. The monopoly on cement didn't prove as lucrative as De Booys had hoped (a competitor evaded the law by importing cement from Dordrecht). The windmill got sold for 1650 guilders, and Kraan converted it into a tobacco mill to produce snuff. Kraan already owned a tobacco shop, on the Grote Houtstraat #12.

In 1865 a steam engine was placed in the windmill by the new owner, J. van Berloo, to make it more competitive. However, it was not efficient enough, and its fate looked sealed. Then, in 1925 the Dutch windmill society Vereniging De Hollandsche Molen bought it for 12,100 guilders, to prevent demolition.

On the evening of April 23, 1932 the windmill burnt down. Lack of funds prevented its reconstruction for 61 years. The first new pole hit the ground on April 21, 1999 and De Adriaan finally reopened on April 23, 2002, exactly 70 years after the fire...

Hellou Fulvio,
very nice atmosphere for this wonderful place.
Nice exposure and colours.

Ciao, Fulvio,
what a shot!! You have an advantge, though, because I don't think you can GET bad light in the Netherlands. It's beautiful. Wonderfully sharp and clear, perfectly saturated colors, and very well composed. What more do you need?? :)) Great job!! Many thanks and warmest wishes,
Shelly

Hi Fulvio,
Excellent capture of one of Haarlem's prides on this very sunny day. De Adriaan looks great in all its splendour and is well placed in the composition. The colours are also nicely saturated. Thanks for sharing!

hi Fulvio,
your trademark polished look to this shot, I like it a lot, it emphasised that luminous light you get in The Lowlands (sometime). did I tell you I read somewhere that the light falls in particular angle in the Netherlands? supposedly that's what inspired the Dutch masters. and looking at this photo I readily believe that :) really fine colours and details too. nice :)

take care,
Kristine

Hoi Fulvio,
Groet, Henk

hello buddy

i see, your x-ion kiometers pedaled this morning have brought some fruits. the light is lovely and so is your painter's polishing touches. the story of the mill is quite fascinating, friend. thanks for posting and sharing.

warm regards,
kristaps

Fulvio, I love it, organized chaos... Even rebuilt it has root is history and it is wonderfully clean an neat (as we outsiders would expect of Holland), AND it is preserved for it's historic value. Great shot tho, clean an sharp and colorful, great job man.

Greg

A gorgeous, gorgeous scene! Great framing and color. Another exceptionally well composed image. The dock perspective and angle on the mill is appeals to the eye. Hope this does not come across offensive, but this is picture postcard perfect.

I really like the additional information included in the note.

Hi, Fulvio -

Great colors and composition. The touches of orange here and there are really nice, and the bit of pier in the R FG is a necessary element.

Best,
Dan

Ciao Fulvio,
in questa foto c'e' tutto l'immaginario dell'Olanda , dal mulino a vento alle tipiche case e infine l'acqua .
perfetta l'esecuzione .
complimenti
Giorgio

Hi Fulvio
This is a magnificent replica that they built and your image does it justice. I like the placement in the scene which allows for some other Dutch architecure to be included. Great history lesson too.

Phil

Goedenavond Fulvio,

Ciao Buddy,

a happy scene from the Netherlands spring. I like the way you framed with the windmill and a bit of the water and its reflection. It's a very particular architecture...I'd love to be there making good use of the bike and taking shots like that. This scene is the motivation I need for this cloudy and rainy friday. Grea job, my friend!

Carlos

Hi Fulvio,
Very crisp clear colors and wonderful charming details to this lovely canal image.
The pastel sky makes for the perfect backdrop to the intricately detailed wind mill.
Striking reflection in the riffling canal surface and love the dock poles and man working on his bicycle (very Dutch).
Have a great day and give the pooch a hug for Gunner & Buddy.
Regards, Tom
