The Old Moat
 |
|
| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
The Old Moat (Dutch: Oude Gracht) is a canal that was dug from the 11th century onward, to connect the river Vecht and the Kromme Rijn river.
The latter used to be the main arm of the river Rhine untill Roman times. When, in the Middle Ages a dam was built in the city of Wijk bij Duurstede, the water level dropped drastically and to maintain a connection to the ocean via the river vecht, a network of canals were dug.
Since the late middle ages, the water level in the canal could be kept low at all times, this enabled the owners of the houses lining the canal to extend their basements underneath the street so that their basements could be directly reached from the quays along the canal. This system of medieval wharves and quays is unique in the world and it is currently a candidate to be put on the UNESCO list. |

Hi Johan,
Beautiful shot well composed with great colors and lights. These trees that framing the picture on the left brought out the reflections. Well done, Regards, Consuelo

Hoi Johan,
Mooie, zonnige foto van de Oude Gracht in Utrecht. Uitstekende framing door de bomen aan weerszijden en sterke verticale compositie om de grachtenpanden en brug vol tot hun recht te laten komen. Prima fotowerk!
Groeten,
Lars
Very good framing for this characteristic Utrecht view, Utrecht is the best in good weather and your picture shows it well.
Cheers
A.
