The red light district in Amsterdam isn't the only place in the city centre where you can find red lights. For most prostitues, it is the safest place though. This is not the red light district, it is on the other side of the city centre (Singel/Herenstraat).

In the red light district most women are relatively safe thanks to the the hordes of tourists strolling through the red light district. The women stand stronger together, usually exploit themselves (instead of being exploited by someone else) and due to tourists/pickpocketers the police is always nearby. In streets like this women tend to be less safe, their pimps are usually on a streetcorner to make sure the women do their work.
