Photographer’s Note
Castle De Haar is one of the most famous and visited castles in all of Holland and was originally founded in the late 1300’s by the Van de Haar family, whose standing in society allowed them the comfort of building a fortified abode.
By 1449, the castle became the property of the Van Zuylen family thru marriage. In 1482, the castle was destroyed due to differences of opinion (quarrels) between the city of Utrecht and its bishop
By the 17th century, the Van Zuylen family line had become extinct and the castle was inherited by the Van Stembors, who originated from the south of Holland - present day Belgium. French soldiers attacked and damaged the castle during the years 1672 and 73.
In 1801, Castle De Haar passed to JJ.van Zuylen van Nijevelt, a distant cousin of the Zuylen family. JJ had inherited a castle that was in a poor state of repair due to 200 years of neglect. Upon his death, these magnificent ruins passed to his son Baron Etienne van Zuylen van Nijevelt in 1890.
The rebuilding of the castle was started in 1892 under the guidance of one of Holland’s most famous architects Dr PHJ Cuypers. It is his influence on Castle De Haar that we see today. PHJ Cuypers rebuilt the castle as close as possible to the original outlines and were there was not sufficient material to work with he used his own ideas of what a medieval castle should look like. The interior was rebuilt to a luxurious standard with the inclusion of electricity. A new bailey with an entrance gate was built on its original foundations.
Today the castle is surrounded by parkland but this was not always the case. From the medieval period to the end of the 19th century, the village of Haarzuilens had been surrounded the castle. Haarzuilens was completely demolished and relocated some one and a half kilometres away to the west. The village chapel however was saved from this wilful destruction and incorporated into the new park.
Castle De Haar is now a museum and opens to the public except during the month of September when the Van Zuylen van Nijevelt family turn it back into a home for their month long stay.

Hello Dear Jaap,
An extraordinary image of Castle de Haar. The water in the moat is a mirror, accordingly the reflection is perfect. All the elements have come together to make this a spectacular shot. Seven people before me looked, and walked past the remarkable picture hanging in your gallery. By the time I finish writing this short critique, no doubt half-a-dozen others will have commented in awe.
At Oxford University I knew a Dutch physicist named Denis ter Haar, who, I was told, came from a noble family. Would he possibly have been a member of this clan, or is the name common?
Warm regards, Jaap, have a good weekend.

Hi,Jaap,
It's a very elegantly shown castle.
I also like you've shown its reflection in the water as well as what I guess is a bridge, ah?
But it's interesting. Is it where you've seen your princess:)))
Well, stay well and TFS

Hallo Jaap,
Prettig weekend, Henk

Hello Jaap -
I do like the image for all of the obvious reasons. But what confuses me a bit is the dismantled bridge or is a reflection or what right in the FG and leading into the image. It is just a confusing element in the image and IMO not really adding to the composition. Maybe it's me! Anyway, for the rest of the image it is pot on the money.
Thank you for sharing.

Hi Jaap,
excellent work, of your style and with the quality of image and color that is habitual.
The reflections are very elegant and pretty, but I think that the horizontal symmetry is not perfect when being cut a little the tower of the castle.
In spite of this small detail, I like the photo, it's very attractive and very well made.
Best regards, my friend,

Dag, Jaap.

Olá Jaap, no spring mood, but instead you have a fantastic reflection effect. It's almost dificult to distinguished which one is real. Great luminosity and contrast of colors from the red bricks emerged in blue scenery. I feel I can jump on this wooden structure and fly over the lake ;-)

Hi Jaap,
I like much the light which comes to gently light the frontage of this marvellous castle. Indeed this kind of bridge which is not useful any more I think… create a beautiful prospect. Obviously qualities of the image are as usual neat and impeccable, Jaap cheer and thank you for the note.

prettig weekend,

Hi Jaap,
Again an astonishing picture full of purity and clearness because you know what to put in the frame : a perfectly calm water plan in the background giving nice reflections, a smooth and deep blue sky for the overall background and finally a subject perfectly placed in the frame. All these points come with a great usage of the ambient light. So well done !

Bonjour Jaap,
Have a great sunday.
