Today I went out for lunch to try out my new camera. Target was the library of the Delft University of Technology as this nice piece of modern architecture offers some great photo opportunities. One of them is the roof, which is covered with grass with some concrete tiles. Any comments/workshops on colours and composition are most welcome.
Tech (in Photoshop): cropped, auto contrast, saturation +10, midtone blues +10, little brightening of the cloud, USM 100/0.5/0, frame added.
UPDATE: Hmmm... just found out that I've made this picture unnecessarily small. Don't know what went wrong when I saved it before uploading to TE, but it is only 25k in size. The JPG compression is too heavy :-( Better luck next time.

I never would have guessed that was a roof. I like this shot because of its simplicity and the color; without the cloud, it would not be very interesting, but the cloud gives a focal point. Well done!
naxius (16685) 2004-07-26 13:21
Very well framed and you respected the tier rules!
Nice colors and contrast.
Rinie_Hoff (9340) 2004-07-26 13:42
Wow, Michael, you had a great lunch today. This is a fine image with your new D70, congratulations! I like the way you composed it with the steps in a fine diagonal. You could even enter in to the hunt, for a path leading into a vanishing point. Did you order that cloud there? ;-) The colors are really nice and you did a wonderful job this afternoon.
Very well seen!
A big fat snmiley for you!
madska (0) 2004-07-26 13:44
that's a very simple then very attarctrive picture. the path leading to the sky is full of rich symbolism.
RGatward (20050) 2004-07-26 13:59
Very nice simple compo Michael, well seen.
Liora (1857) 2004-07-26 14:21
What a wonderful interpretation Michael! It makes an already great photo an excellent one! Perfect composition, very good colors and contrast.
Roly (2024) 2004-07-26 14:29
Outstanding simple composition, nicely saturated colors. It certainly isn't your usual roof... I wish the image was larger.
brants (259) 2004-07-26 15:48
Well, if you ask me what I like in this picture -- I do not know... I'm just adding it to my favourites.
Japie (72) 2004-07-26 15:53
So who cuts the grass on the roof? I love the simplicity yet effective message in this. Well taken
dominique (11414) 2004-07-26 17:14
doreeneden (1014) 2004-07-26 17:32
A roof with a difference. Nice simplicity to the photo and colours are very good,
Jeppe (18654) 2004-07-26 17:49
Wonderful composition Michael - simple but effective - I also like the title you choosen - says it all :-)
jane-d (154) 2004-07-26 18:02
Wow! Love the simplicity and the rythm of the picture! The cloud makes it all so real... But where did you get the blue sky from? Can´t believe what a sunny lunchbreak you had ;-)
Clochette (8076) 2004-07-26 18:03
A roof ??? Incredible !...
Anyway a very nice perspective, thanks to your eye Michael !
I thought it was a hill, and the title could have been "Stairway to heaven", even though this one has been used and used and used... ;-)
cgrindahl (6113) 2004-07-26 19:16
Bigger, bigger, bigger!
This is a lovely image Michael that deserves every pixel TE offers us. Before you post an image check the dimensions in your image processing software and size it accordingly. With the fine equipment you're using I don't doubt you are capturing very large images and reducing them. Simply reduce them less.
As for the image, it is first rate. The repetitive stone path leading up the nicely saturated green slope toward the gorgeous sky and cloud. This is worthy of Carlos Martos. We want more!
spence (65) 2004-07-26 19:38
Simple and excellent. Very well seen, Michael.
cmartos (242) 2004-07-26 20:47
Very simple composition, but nice result, very effective. I like the blue/green proportions and the lonely cloud ;-). Well done Michael!
kikvel (4784) 2004-07-26 20:53
eduogawa (7) 2004-07-26 23:41
What a wonderful composition. So simple but so eye catching. The sky that go from almost white to blue and the green, and the extra touch: the cloud. The black frame is also very nice selection, you need to copy write it!
maphoto (8082) 2004-07-26 23:42
Original view, very well presented great colors an very appropriate title. I like the light on this very nice blue blue sky, simply beatifu, well done.
miguel (1912) 2004-07-27 0:16
What a wonderful composition!...and so simple.
But I think it deserves a bigger size and less compression.
Excellent work anyway.
carper (96) 2004-07-27 2:55
Very good one Michael,
It's small but good. Exelent composition, great cropping, fantastic colours. One thing the big fat black border. I don't like that.
Farther it's very good job.
deekay (166) 2004-07-27 3:34
great composition! it reminds me of another shot that i recently saw in TE with one cloud, 1 tree and this kind of atmosphere in the picture. i love the simplicity and at the same time the power of this image. the contrast and the lines are also great. I maybe would have personally like a bit more saturation on the colors to enhance the contrast between green and blue, but this is a personal taste. great not too.
hdl (6995) 2004-07-27 13:11
cdewet (0) 2004-07-27 13:46
Simple, effective & striking. Very good image
manny (21833) 2004-07-28 2:54

Although small this image is quite intense! Great colors and details. Excelent graphical image. That cloud is a real plus!
CoolDan (2516) 2004-07-30 10:10
Jolies couleurs Michael. Well done.
Burnham (2428) 2004-08-04 6:24
Nah, compression is no big deal here Michael, the compo is just too good to be bothered with such details ;o) I love this one, nothing new to say expect it goes staright to my favorites ;o)
rabani (9645) 2004-08-05 4:55
Hie Michael. You got me here. Looking at the thumbnail or even the photo itself, I thought it was a green field and blue sky. Who would have thought it was a roof.I am sorry about your colorblindness.Still, it didn't stop you from getting great photos is there? Great work here Mike.Points later ok. I be back.

Beautiful minimalistic composition, bravo!
RandomCameraGuy (3069) 2004-08-07 14:20
Very cool. Great colours, great composition, and great luck in getting that beautiful cloud to appear at just the right moment and location! Cheers MG!
BTW I'm considering the purchase of a D70 myself. What are your general impressions so far?
nwoehnl (122) 2004-08-09 12:21
A lovely piece of work, Michael. It seems the composition couldn't be any simpler, but it is very well conceived, with the diagonal of the walkway seemingly pointing to the cloud, and with the perfect cropping and color contrast. Great stuff.
You've got to consider a re-post in a bigger format though, this is just too pretty to remain that small ;-)
Proxilva (2157) 2004-08-09 13:32
mikee (2354) 2004-08-10 2:26
This has the right ingridients for a great composition: the tiles which seem to form a path from the bottom left corner up towards the sky and the cloud on the blue sky in the upper right corner, which, I guess is the result of mother nature being on your side. Out of everything this green lawn could have been on, I would have never guessed a roof in a university center. Well seen. Well done.
lemon_logix (1054) 2004-08-14 12:11
A roof! I thought it was a path. how deceiving photos are, good thing you have notes to tell us. I like this pix, simple and effective. Simple colors.
chappy77 (306) 2004-10-05 8:55
So simple but so affective. Great composition, and I think the colours are just perfect the way they are!
aznegrao (10296) 2004-10-29 11:27
Simples e fantastico Michael.
retesh_gondal (173) 2004-11-16 11:54
well a perfect pitorial repersentation of the phrase...sky is the limit...nice shot
Steft (5975) 2004-12-14 15:06

ash_parikh (2266) 2005-05-13 2:43
great composition and very well noticed. the path to heaven.
remcos (707) 2005-09-18 16:04
This could also be titled. “Stairs to the cloud”
Lovely picture colours are great.
maurazos (0) 2005-10-01 18:50
A really oniric and surrealistic image, like a Dali painting. Impressive colors. Regards.
shal (944) 2005-11-07 5:13

onmax (849) 2006-03-14 18:23
Beaconx (81) 2006-08-13 9:49
Beautiful capture. So good, it seems like it has been set up. The colors, the transition and the angle of the tiles are perfect with the position of the cloud. Cheers,
kwazireal (181) 2007-12-02 14:16
Image has a magenta color caste. It is interesting, well composed and nicely exposed, except the polarizing filter effect is just a little too strong. The saturation added in PS did not help this image.
Photographer's Note was excellent.
Chengappa13 (6) 2012-05-03 5:55
The stone paved path, leading our vision towards the cloud has done the magic in this pic! Very refreshing pic!
