Photographer’s Note

Autumn has finaly come back on the Southern part of the Netherlands and the miserable weather that characterized this summer changed a little bit for better. This allowed me a few walks along the North Sea or as it is the case forn this picture, in the nice cities in the surroundings of The Hague. We are here in Delft, the city f Vermeer and we are looking to the Oude Kerk (the Old Church) along one of the many beautiful canals of the city. I have thought that the sepia treatment was nice to give a nostalgic athmosphere to the shot (and to get rid of quite poor light conditions), but the orange beetle was so flashy that I didn't want to desaturate it...

L'automne est finalement arrivé sur le sud de la Hollande, après une période estivale misérable du point de vue météo. Cette saison a été un peu plus agréable et j'en ai profité pour faire quelques balades au bord de la Mer du Nord et dans les villes des alentours de La Haye. Nous sommes ici à Delft, la cité de Vermeer, et longeons un des nombreux et agréables canaux de la ville, jusqu'à la Oude Kerk (la vieille église).
Le treatemen sépia m'a paru adéquat pour donner une ambiance un peu nostalgique à l'image (et avouons le aussi pour passer sur des conditions de lumière bien pauvres). Cependant, le orange de la coccinelle était si "flashy" que j'aurai trouvé dommage de le désaturer!

Hi Loic,
Good thinking - this town view is very suitable for using B&W and desaturating that Orange Beetle would indeed be a shame.
Hope there will be more day coming that you can enjoy a walk on the beach.

Great shot! Wonderful viewpoint and composition, great atmosphere of autumn and nostalgia. Cars are better in b/w, but you made this one little Beetle look great in orange. Very well done.

Excellent POV, perspective and composition. The light managment is perfect and so is the "effect" of partial desaturation that functions perfectly well. Congratulations!

Effective desaturation of almost the entire image bar the orange volkswagon at right. Nice reflection & symmetry of the steeple in the canal, with good perspective & pov. Tfs!

Bonjour Loïc,
On ne voit que la voiture, on s'intéresse au reste de l'image qu'ensuite. L'image a une bonne précision et une bonne profondeur. La lumière n'est pas celle de Poussan, mais malgré tout, il y a beaucoup de charme. Bel ouvrage.

yes, this works fine and is an eyecatcher. The canal in the middle gives also some depth and reflects nice the tower of the church. The left side has a bit less contrast in the beginning I think.

Effectivement, Hervé a raison, je suis passionné de cox et de Beetle. Donc, je ne serai pas impartial dans mon jugement! :D

Très jolie perspective avec un beau reflet dans le canal. La cox est fun et la désaturation attire bien l'attention sur elle (au détriment du reste, mais c'est un choix). Un photo bien sympa...

Joli style, que j'aime bien, la "coccinelle" est bien mise en valeur dans une photo qui offre aussi une perspective qui de canal qui se termine dans le clocher.
Bien composé, c'est très attrayant comme image.

Bonjour Loïc,
en premier lieu, mes félicitations par ta photo 200ème sur TE.
Et c'est une photo de célébration avec le traitement sépia qui la fait plus intéressante et avec une apparence ancienne, en donnant plus de force à l'image automnale.
Le détail de non avoir désaturé la coccinelle est réellement intelligent, donne une touche chromatique à l'image et une voiture classique et sympathique se fait remarquer.
Tu as fait un bon travail photographique ici, j'aime bien.

Hi Loic,

great idea, the POV is perfect, allowing to see the tower reflected on the water. The only colored subject attracts our eyes giving life to the entire artwork.

- Ecoute Loïc, pour cette fois je ne vais pas choisir des photos de "cailloux" mais celle-ci, parce que déjà le traitement m'amuse, j'y joue souvent aussi, puis c'est ta #200 donc ça me donne l'occasion de te féliciter pour "l'ensemble de ton œuvre" et bravo en particulier pour ce poétique canal !

Interesting POV ... I like the mixed medium used here. The canal and the lined tree directs ones focus towards the tower ... well captured. The reflections also adds dimension to the scene. Well composed with good tones and contrast. Well done! tfs

Une pointe de gaieté à travers cette prise de vue tristounette, la coccinelle redonne vie à l'ensemble.
Bravo d'avoir su trouver l'originalité et la mise en valeur de cette composition.
Il ne faut pas oublier, malgré tout, l'édifice religieux qui se mire sans déplaisir dans les eaux du canal.

I always associate this kind of image with the film Schindler's List and the girl in the red coat. It's a well composed image using the perspective of the canal as lead-in. The church at the end is in the perfect situation to make the most of its reflection too. Congratultions too for reaching 200 posts. Well done

Good idea to make this old fashion postcard with the Royal (orange) “Kever”. One of the princes has a job at the university in Delft so maybe this is his car :-)

Bonjour Loic -

At first look I said to my self "...a very nice B&W conversion..." but then I spotted the orange VW. Wow, what a touch of genius! I do like the canal and the embankments as leading lines into the church steeple in the BG. The lighting conditions are a bit dull but your conversion makes use of the poor conditions. The church steeple does look a bit out of vertical but does not really distract from the image. I think this is well seen and well done.

Delft et son célèbre "bleu", tu aurais pu choisir cette couleur comme variante au sépia mais je pense que cela n'aurait pas eu la même ambiance. Idée originale la désaturation pour donner une touche de couleur dans l'image. Bon point de vue avec le clocher qui se reflète dans le canal. Une belle et agréable image, merci Loïc.

Ça ne serait pas ta 200ème ? Super, l'effet rendu par cette Cox, c'est une très bonne idée d'avoir préservé sa couleur. Tu as fait le bon choix en désaturant le reste, on oublie effectivement les conditions de lumière.

Bon cadrage tout en perspective,tous les elements contribus a guider le regard sur le clocher,tous sauf la cox...d'habitude j'aime pas trop les desaturations partielles mais là ...le orange...ça fait tellement NL que sa passe.
C'est bien de nous montrer des images du pays ou tu vis...je viens de remarquer un truc:c'est mes yeux ou il penche severe le clocher?pourtant le reste de l'image est recta,c'est zarbi!

un traitement de faveur pour cette coccinelle, je retrouve bien là ton coté écolo !!
un travail tres sympa sur une image de base soignée.
tu avais aussi la solution d'un format carré en virant 1/3 à gauche (moins d'interêt) donnant ainsi plus de presence au clocher, à son reflet et bien entendu à la fameuse cox.

Sympa ce canal bordé de vieilles maisons, qui se dirige vers l'église au fond, dans le ciel et dans le canal! La coccinelle qui frime toute seule dans la rue est bien mignonne! Belle composition eterci du partage!

It was really an interesting idea to turn image into sephia tone and to leave one object coloured. It is often interesting effect, but this one is perfect! Nice concept and fine execution!

belle désaturation qui permet d'attirer l'oeil sur la coccinelle, mais je préfére plus le cadrage avec cette belle perspective sur la cathédrale et son reflet d'eau, pour une 200 elle est bien choisi et bravo pour ce chiffre rond, en route pour les 200 suivantes

i could work this one out quickly from the thumbnail
to me this is a typical dutch canal shot with a good end detail in the spire to fill the upper half of the shot
the drivers in those cars need to be careful when getting out and keep their feet steady
