Photographer’s Note
Yesterday, I visited a small patch of nature near the urban area of Zoetermeer. I was walking along a brook with friends when I saw this dragon fly. I made several shots and this was one of the best. I love the beautiful colors of this insect.
As I am no expert on insects, can anyone help me in telling which species this is.

I have no idea about the species it belongs, but I like your capture: good colours and composition.

Jan, I think this is a male Ischnura elegans (blue-tailed damselfly). Females come in different colours, one of them is the violet form.
The tail end of your damselfly looks sharper than the front end. Did you shoot at 1/30 sec? (I think 30 sec must be a mistake when entering the data..). 1/30 is on the slow side for handheld, if you want a sharp shot.
Had the damselfly been sharp, this would have been very good, because you have a clean background to set it off. However, you need more DOF than f 5.6 will give you, more like f11 or f13.
If you have too little light, you might try using the setting M, pop shutter to 1/200, F-stop to 13 and onboard flash on. This works well for macros in a lot of situations, so I've come to realise (I've a 300D too).

Good shot I would have to agree with all Bente had to say,
quiet a few of my shots come out at speeds betqeen 1/30 and 1/60 because digital cameras seem to have software capable of handling a litle camera shake. the slight blurring of the head is because he turned it as you pressed the shutter. all i can add is good 1st efort lets see a few more as good as this and the odd one will come out superb.

Hello Jan, I like details a lot captured in the damselfly, I published a similar picture, to yours but with the tail in color orange: Damselfly Orange The details of the lines in the paws are fascinating, as well as the tone of the blue color in the tail. The color of the leaf on which this sustained is of the best thing to appreciate their beautiful colors. Cordial greetings. *Ninfa Urania *
