This is an Air France Airbus A340 landing at Princess Juliana Airport in St. Maarten, DWI. The photo was taken from the deck of the Sunset Beach Bar. It is a daily routine for visitors to St Martin/Maarten to stand on the beach and get sand blasted by jet blast (see Workshop).
The airport is famous for its short landing strip only 2,180 metres/7,152 ft, which is barely enough for heavy jets. Because of this, the planes approach the island flying extremely low, right over Maho Beach. Countless photos of large jets flying at 10--20 m/30-60 ft over relaxing tourists at the beach have been dismissed as photoshopped many times, but are nevertheless real. For this reason as well it has become a favorite for planespotters.

Very great shot, it4s very amazing. The plane seems to crash.
haraldpr (16) 2007-06-18 10:12
Impressive shot. The plane makes the place much less idyllic!
sowhat (1004) 2007-06-18 11:25
Oh la la! I never seen somethinh like this before. The image is quite stunning. I can not imagine the noise and the jet blast there.
The pic is well composed, nice colors, a little quality problem due to resizing and sharpenning, perhaps.
Fis2 (82006) 2007-06-18 13:19
Curious shot! Good frame and colors. Very impressive picture. Good work.
ribeiroantonio (22637) 2007-06-18 23:43
I would like to go there just for the picture and nothing else. It must be very annoying to hear those big birds arriving or departing. I do not see the point of staying at the beach and listening to the noise and inhale the pollution. Well done.
AiresSantos (56155) 2007-06-19 3:33
Magnificent details in this amazing picture. I like the dove and how you captured the plain.
Good POV and sharpness.
TFS and greetings
trips (1598) 2007-06-19 5:25
This view is incredible! How can people be relaxed on the beach?!
It should be also a great experience for those who are inside the airplane!
ktanska (24144) 2007-06-19 6:33
It must be quite an experience. A340 with it's four engines is a beautiful plane. And the scene all in all quite surreal. The gull flying to same direction is a funny detail.
Cretense (68685) 2007-06-19 6:47
Very impressive close up! Incredible view of this plane landing right above the heads of the people. Great focus and composition. congratulations!
Budapestman (82620) 2007-06-19 6:50
Wow, this is stunning image. I like the contrast between the idyllic atmosphere and the unbelievable spectacle. Very impressive POV, composition and excellent realization. Great shot! Have a nice day
xuaxo (6846) 2007-06-19 6:55
Finally I see a photo of this beach with a plane that I believe is not "photoshopped". I could hardly believe the similar photos I saw before.
This is really amazing. I'd like to go there just to take pictures from the plane window, then pictures like yours, then go back home in the first flight. It's certainly impossible to relax with the noise and pollution.
Your picture has a great plus: the bird in same course of the plane.
Silke (3027) 2007-06-19 9:37
Stunning capture -- I must compliment you on the superb sharpness of this!
Excellent composition too: it makes the airplane feel VERY close
Paolo (41222) 2007-06-19 12:46
Hi Asa, funny and interesting picture, with a really unusual landing...on the beach.
good quality, POV and funny view on the WS.
lucasgalodoido (21051) 2007-06-19 13:16
Finally the photo! It was very nice, impressive as the runway is short too for great airplanes as this! Interesting the comparison of the great bird of metal with the pigeon flying togheter, really the decisive momment!
Congratulations my friend!
jmcl (14535) 2007-06-19 20:32
That is almost beyond belief .. amazing capture .. everything is so sharp and crisp. .. both a flight and a beach I think I will avoid : )
luiscar (3286) 2007-06-20 4:40
Hello Asa, I like this image for the impactante that is and for the difficulty that it has to frame the plane and also with big definition.
it seems as if the plane was irritating few meters of the heads of the swimmers.
Scharan (14144) 2007-06-20 22:59
Bela captura num momento mais que decisivo...ótimos detalhes e cores, boa nitidez de imagem. Parabéns!
kebek (5438) 2007-06-21 6:48
Me again :)
As i'm working at the airport, it is not a theme i comment on very often, you know, i'm here to relax, hehe ;) But this must be really something for the spotters, kind of one and only spot. And yes, i've seen some movies from this place, but here i really love the seagull apparently racing with the "bigger fellow". Great timing and quite enough sharpness on the plane.
Mikos (4326) 2007-06-21 10:14
Hey I know all about this place, it has to be great to be right there and check what you have photographed in person!
So shocking and amazing your awesome image!
Cheers and thank you for your words about my last image!
isabela_sor (47541) 2007-06-21 11:04
My Goddddd!!!Stunning!!!Can fly so low????Without any incident!!!!!?????Very very impressive! This is a real decisive moment...your oic is going in my favorites theme :)
gilou530 (34) 2007-06-21 15:08
wpuah, impressionnante cette prise de vue, et cela devait l'etre encore plus sur place, mais je qui me parais dérisoire c'est la mouette juste a coté de l'avion, bien cadré et net
evanrizo (456) 2007-06-22 6:33
What!!!??? Is it possible? Tell me it is not a montage!-:)
Superb, the timing is great, a plane and a seagull over the heads of the people, congratulations for this.
Signal-Womb (13048) 2007-06-22 7:10
That is unbelievable and shocking! Great opportune moment you capture here. I don't like flying and would certainly be terrified that that plane would make the runway each time. I can understand the excitement on the beach though. Il check this out on you tube. Regards Steve.
jrj (34841) 2007-06-22 10:11
Incredible cut and compo ASA. Looks like the big flying machine is in for a beach party. Very effectful, interesting work (and place)
sam_wald (720) 2007-06-22 12:51
Nice moment to catch! Everything around seems to be so relaxed... I can imagine how much noise it was.
belido (19934) 2007-06-22 13:41
incredible shot! It looks the plain was pasted. My God, it should be not more than 10 meters from ground. Very decisive moment. I wonder how loud is the noise at the moment...great shot, Asa!
testmaniac (13508) 2007-06-23 11:21
Good shot at the right moment!.
The plane and the bird is looking like they race together:)
TFS and greetings
ls7902 (7314) 2007-06-23 22:41
A very interesting post. It looks dangerously low for the people on the beach. I wonder how loud the noise would be. Great notes to go with the posting. Regards. Latiff.
worldcitizen (6483) 2007-06-23 22:57
I saw this scene on television once, and it is amazing to see it again in your photo! It is both exciting and scary!! Great job capturing the plane at exactly the moment it flew over the beach. It is funny to have the seagull racing in at the same time, too!
guillaumejm (0) 2007-06-24 13:24
It is incredible to see the plane so low altitude just over the heads of people!. And your WS shows how close people are from planes.
I thin personnaly I would never go to this beach (even if I'm french as the plane is!!!).
Any way very funny the bird flying together with the plane. You were in the good timing.
Gerrit (44243) 2007-06-24 18:22
St Maarten realy has an impossible airstrip. Great catch, the inclusion of the people watching is very good.
kLe (2196) 2007-06-25 3:38
as you say, this is a wellknown place there are hundreds of photographs of it. But always interesting to see and to make some comments to this one.
Probably it is difficult to get a good artistic picture: almost impossible to choose a preferred point of view, complicated background and much light. The interesting part is of course the strange conditions that those bathers have to bear during their short two-weeks-break after one year standing nonsenses of the boss.
I do not like on the other hand how the heads of the tourist intrude in the foreground. I have tried how the picture would be without them and does not work good because you loose a reference. Perhaps would be better to have see a part of the of them.
I like the seagull that seems to make a race against the plane to see who reaches first the end of the landing strip. It is known that for long distances planes are better than seagulls but the runway is very short and the seagull maybe has a chance this time.
JoeyE (178) 2007-06-26 6:00
That is so low!!!
A great shot with good composition.
TOMHIL (236) 2007-06-26 11:36
Hi Asa, this really is quite an incerdible photo and I can see why some people could mistake for one that has been photoshopped. It doesn't look like a great beach for putting a hat over your face and falling asleep, but it's a great picture nicely captured. I especially like the seagull that looks like its trying to mimick and race the plane!
rossy85 (2879) 2007-06-29 3:27
I just checked your gallery and found this shot. It`s amazing, and very impressive. I read with interest your note and I can`t believe in my eyes. It`s incredible how low this plane is flying.
Very good picture
donluicu (24718) 2007-06-29 12:57
i knew that in St Martin the airport is kinda weird...placed in a strange way...
incredible image here..
thx for showing it to us..
feather (51130) 2007-06-30 14:18
Amazing photo. I can't believe I never heard of this before. What makes it even more incredible is the seagull guiding the plane into land. You also seriously risked your camera being sandblasted. Well done
rushfan2112 (2965) 2007-06-30 22:45
What a place to build a resort!!!??? Are these people mad?? The pilot would only have to get it wrong by an incredibly small margin and BOOM - disaster. Great shot - but not somewhere I'm ever going to visit!! Regards, Paul.
banyanman (7789) 2007-07-01 8:59
Wow, this is low over the beach, Asa, and I can understand why people would think a photograph like this has been photoshopped. I believe you that it has not because nearly everyone on the beach seems to be looking at the plane. The seagull seems to be racing the plane - an interesting detail. Cheers . . . David
dcawker (5717) 2007-07-04 7:11
This is just amazing! Looks dangerous too! Regards, Doug
bibiweb (8) 2007-07-04 22:04
Wow! Now that's really impressive and I don't think I'd enjoy spending a day on the beach here (well, I don't like beaches anyway). This is a great LATW (Learn Abouth The World) photo and it was a good idea to post it on TE. I love the detail of the gull flying by the plane.
Have a nice day.
danos (83093) 2007-07-05 6:04
very strange to have made the airport to pass above from the heads of tourists and from the hotel.I see the umbrellas to lean from the pressure of the air. This appears very well in the workshop.Excellent daily reportage.Well done.
nivaldo (15415) 2007-07-06 12:37
Hi Asa !
I thought it was a montge!...
A very impressive (and dangerous!!!) landing I would say! Almost unresponsable, isn´t it?!
Great capture, a good flagrante!
UlfE (14639) 2007-07-07 1:12
Wow! What a fantastic shot. Totally unbeleiveable. I really understand why is a favorite of plane spotter. TFS and have a nice week end!
Uhu (8399) 2007-07-07 12:05
You know... Maybe I got a crooked mind, but I don't think that it's very safe. More than that, it looks like very dangerous idea of airport. Photo is perfect, really, but I hope that they'll do something with this landing route. Expand it, or something.
yesterday (9833) 2007-07-07 23:14
WOW it is low, spendid capture, and a special picture.
king (2905) 2007-07-07 23:52
What a ridiculous situation here. No place for me!
I admire the sharpness of the well composed picture. The flying bird on the foreground is a humoristic touch.\Gr.
startacked (1331) 2007-07-08 12:49
Hi Asa (great name!),
The first time I saw a similar picture I thought it was photoshopped. So it does really exist. Great capture with that fast shutter. Workshop is great too, I would love to experience it once. TFS, Gilbert
cdmonson (4478) 2007-07-09 10:10
Wow. Cool capture. It looks like chaos is about to break loose with this shot. It seems a little blurry, but otherwise is quite nice. Great job.

great timing for a340. I thing the beach location is very dangerous. well done. have a nice day.

stunning image, something unbelievable! Great moment capture!
CaptainJack (0) 2007-07-12 10:12
Hi Asa - wow, this is an amazing sight. As you note, it almost looks fake, but guess its the reality. You've really captured the closeness to the beach on the plane's descent onto the runway, even including the water in the composition to show how close to the edge it is. Nicely done!
fserajian (2293) 2007-07-13 23:38
What a dramatic shot, I really like, well done and TFS
Rosa (0) 2007-07-15 0:17

lilylambrouille (314) 2007-07-15 4:32
Quelle photo impressionnant !
Les vacanciers n'ont pas forcément l'air dérangé, la preuve il y en a sur cette plage... J'imagine l'etat d'esprit des voyageurs se trouvant dans l'avion...
bruce_wayne (1507) 2007-07-15 15:01
incredible shot!!! Nice and funny composition, congratulations for your fast shot!

This is really impressive! Incredible how they almost touch the ground here. What a feeling to be on the beach on that moment. I like this, it's a good shot taken on the right moment!
happypoppeye (4817) 2007-07-19 17:36
Asa, I've seen pictures of this airport before. I just find it amazing that the runway is so close to the beach. I want to say it's extremely poor planning on the part of St. Maarten but it may be necessary considering the size of some of these islands.
Great catch. Good timing. The photo is sharp with good color. I would have thought you would need a higher shutter to get the plane this sharp.
marianita (3455) 2007-07-20 3:41
perfect timing! i bet the people smell teh fuel coming from the plane! beautiful capture
Giorgio (11279) 2007-07-20 23:16

JCG (35129) 2007-07-21 6:03
Surprising and original photograph. I will not like to be in the place of the pilot of the plane or a tourist on this beach !!! Superb glance Asa, cheer. The image is remarkable and in more there is the gull which seems to make the race. Beautiful work.
With all my friendships and a good WE,
bazal (7900) 2007-07-21 9:23
I have seen a TV program about this airport with the beach and swimmers at the immediate neighborhood. It's an amazing situation and you managed to make a very impressive picture with the giant from AF landing so closely from the head of he watchers. amazing, indeed.
Thanks for sharing.
jaywalker (16095) 2007-07-21 12:53
Hi Asa, This is one of the most amazing aircraft photo I have ever seen, to me this would be to low for comfort if I was on that beach, it is a first class daily life shot, thanks for this stunning voew, kind regards Wilson.
tabora (0) 2007-07-23 8:14
J'ai vu la même situation a Majorque,je m'étonne des parasols qui ne s'envolent pas,ce n'est pas un endroit ou j'irais me baigner, prise au bon moment, photo nette et belles couleurs.
krakowiak (4762) 2007-07-24 14:07
This place is incredible especially for planespotters. What is like here is the gull flying in the same direction like landing jet ;) Very nice catched moment!
logios (1903) 2007-07-26 22:10
Excellent picture Asa, you have captured in the right moment. Very impressive.Congratulations!
pierrefonds (54984) 2007-07-29 9:16
A nice image of the Air France Airbus A340 landing at St-Marteens airport. The photo has a good composition, DOF and nice colors.I would probably go on vacation there just to be able to take photos of aircraft. Thanks for sharing.
vinicio (23415) 2007-07-30 5:53
Incredible view of this airplane so low over the beach, dangerous situation indeed, but fascinating I think, your image is really interesting and good, Asa, and it's nice the gull that fly with the airplane, well done, compliments.

I like well aviation and your shot is really interesting !
Very good sharpness with many details to watch.
I imagine reactors noises there...
Well done !
ekinokswest (2994) 2007-08-02 16:05
once again I am amazed by how interestin all your photos have been in your gallery. one key element that makes this photo special is , how the people look towards the airplane. it is ironic because since it happens so frequently I d assume they were used to it but they seem not really .
sevman13 (553) 2007-08-07 23:03
impressive moment and shot.
very suitable pic for the soul of TE, really teaching something..
wautersw (3647) 2007-08-08 11:59
Not really a place to enjoy some peaceful and quiet holiday ;-). A very spectacular view. Good details and colors. TFS

Hi Asa. This is really scary. I remember the airport at Corfu where you land over a chapel and take of just over a highway, but this is really something else. Well done!
cessy (13647) 2007-08-10 9:31
wooww... so low ....
very nice capture of the moment
it looks like as if about to touch the umbrellas
ppmiranda (373) 2007-08-12 6:04
Impressive the mixture of plane, bird and persons, doubtless an excellent photograph.
atus (15838) 2007-08-14 9:40
a very well captured, incredible and impressive shot! The perspective is fantastic and the overall sharpness very good. The seagull flying in the same direction is a pleasant addition. Great one!
Tfs and best wishes.
Emile (20350) 2007-08-14 21:19
When you see a shot like this one you know that the airplane is landing in only one place, St. Maarten Island. Scary but at the same time very impressive shot. Well done. TFS.
ryno (6739) 2007-08-16 4:49
Hi Asa, I don't know how I missed this one before. Scary stuff! Almost unbelievable how close to the people the aircraft is here. You've caught the plane very well here, especially considering the speed at which it was travelling. Great work!
cobbydale (1958) 2007-08-18 10:09
Wow - this is an amazing shot Asa! Can't believe they can fly so low above the beach!
EOSF1 (1944) 2007-08-18 10:52
Hello Asa, a classic but it's always impressive to look at. Technically good, great POV. Well done, thanks !
PS I also like the Gull trying to imitate the Airbus...;-)
terminus (563) 2007-08-23 9:02
Amazing shot. I had seen some other shot of the same spot, but I specially like yours for the oportunity of the gull just bellow the airbus. It looks as if on purpouse.
Didi (55103) 2007-08-25 9:43
What a disturbing place to spend noisy holidays.
Interesting subject and I think local people must complain for their sake; the place looks not safe in case of accident.
eyesthetix (641) 2007-08-25 13:11
this is a very amazing shot.
You managed to capture the movement without any blur on both the jet or the people/background :-)
Very well done :-)
Best regards, Daniel
mikeo (12129) 2007-08-26 22:53
What a shot! Really unbelievable!
Despite difficult conditions you kept the good sharpenes!
placombe (7815) 2007-08-29 14:11
Stunning picture. One must be scared to death when he wakes up under the parasol with 300 tons of metal over his body. It must be quite a thrilling place to be, for an aviation fan...of course.
Bluejeans (64247) 2007-08-29 14:59
Ola Asa fantastica foto , com o poder das turbinas do avião não neve ficar nada na praia , que momento incrivel !!!!
Gostei muito do WS
Um abraço Gonçalo
riclopes (35577) 2007-08-30 4:27
Wow, what an impressive scene you show us here, Asa. It surprises me how the hell can this be a normal situation and happening all the time, everyday. It can't be healthy...or at least a relaxed place to be. I can see that you even got a seagull flying with the plane. I've never seen such a strong impact from those flying creatures. Well done and tfs.
danbachmann (1746) 2007-09-01 1:35
This is amazing that this is the normal flight plan! You did well to fit the airplane, the beach and some other people all in the frame as well as a well exposed sky.
pembsexplorer (21) 2007-09-04 0:42
Like it has already been said, I would like to go there just to get this picture!!! A truely amazing photo..Brillaint!!

This airbus is under good escort, for sure......or is it the exact opposite leading role!
Very spectacular juxtaposition!
Jean-Luc (5488) 2007-09-12 1:50
jmdaoudal (82) 2007-09-13 22:12
Definitly impressive... It is what we can call a colateral effect about mass tourism :-))
I like the gull going the right way in parralel to the plane..
Good quality and very good moment for the shot.
I like it

I happily join the chorus of admirers of the remarkable photograph. I though I had critiqued this photo before. It must be a freightening experience for beach dwellers for flight coming over so close. In Hong Kong, many years ago when the old airport was still functioning, was for the planes to fly between skyscrapers, for occupants of the buildings to look out from their offices and see the behemoths at the same level. The fleeting moment you've captured has a seagull, paralleling the plane.
MarcT (20964) 2007-09-24 4:48
this is indeed a rare picture taken just on the spot.
Brendon (285) 2007-09-26 15:53
One couldnt imagine the roar of that beauty soaring, or for that matter searing overhead. Very impressive! You have incorporated many components to make this scene work out really well. The beach going bystanders who seem somewhat unfazed by the whole ordeal (mind you the two guys in the forefront I would like to have seen just a touch more of them in the picture).
Quite impressive, TFS this modern marvel of lunacy!
Loic_bzh (7646) 2007-09-28 6:47
incredible, I was talking with a friend of mine of this airport few days ago. He moved to St Marteen recently. If you don't mind, I would like to post this pict in the discussion forum...
You're shot is perfect. The plane is sharper than the rest of the pict and it shows its speed.
marknunnerley (2780) 2007-10-02 3:31
Superb shot Asa. I bet they were really blown away by this on the beach;) I also like the seagull that is kind of saying 'Bring it on', ha, ha. Really good work.
Lee30 (78) 2007-10-04 18:01
San Maarten' Maho beach is THE ULTIMATE place for any aviation enthusiast, I wish I'll make it there someday.
PLD_images (7149) 2007-10-14 15:46
Just a superb shot. I was in St-Marteen for a day on a cruise, but I did not see any planes that day. Well done on your part.
Regards - Paul
RegisMinot (1541) 2007-10-17 13:08
It's almost incredible. How can tourists quietly bath in this beach, when planes land so close to their bath towels ?
Noise and danger seem to argue for a closure of this beach. Surprising ! Nevertheless, excellent picture !
Seiei (426) 2007-10-18 18:02
Hi Asa !
Impressive shot, really ! And the people can stand so close ?
mphotographies (1976) 2007-10-26 0:48
Just go with the flow as the seagull imitates the jumbo jet! I'm an airplane fan, nothing amazes me seeing this shot! Carefull with all those sandblast, might get those sand particles in your sensor!
All the best!
Moyano (163) 2007-10-31 4:16
This is a shot for Airliners.net! :-) Pretty low, that! A bit closer and it'd be enough to blast some of those tourists a whole end into the water...=)
derek3755 (2341) 2007-11-18 7:15
must be pretty impressive for plane spotters, but as a holiday resort, it's not a destination i would go for. The pollution and noise and getting sand blasted at you, would not be ideal for a relaxing holiday. Great capture though, and quite funny that the gull is flying in the same direction too.
MarianneS (15338) 2007-11-18 14:24
This is an incredible photography (and an incredible situation). This is an amazing shot! I like the way the bird flies as if he wanted to compete with the plane.
Jakab (3867) 2007-11-19 4:53
a "Decisive Moment", indeed. Astonishing situation on a well captured picture where everything is on place - except the plane perhaps.
eska (522) 2007-12-01 7:46
Even blind planespotters would have had luck here. Very interesting place, thank you for showing. Workshop photo is very informative too, little overexposed, I think you could adjust for that. I have tried to apply some corrections to it, works but being shrunk for TE it looses details. You could try having original of it. It is good addition to main post.
PS.I think this beach could serve well to relieve some gastric problems, like obstruction, it would work for me. ;-)
denisn72 (8300) 2007-12-11 7:54
Oh my God! The plane is so close from the ground! Excellent point of view on this huge plan. What a spot for the ones who like planes. Thanks for sharing. Well done.
wolf38 (30318) 2007-12-16 2:42
Hello Asa. A landing airplane, beach with people, sea gull. Fantastically. You photographed in the correct moment. Really impressing. Very beautifully. Best regards, Wolfgang.
tmx (1324) 2007-12-17 4:58
hi Asa, I also put some points into that picture. really amazing moment, couldn't belive in such a short landing. I really could imagine that special sound of the huge jet above my head. cool! regards!
Bruno40 (6658) 2007-12-17 5:30
Fantastic capture. Perfect timmig. I would like to take something similar some day here in Manila, but the closenest of the plane with gound can only be achieved here.
very good job
Benedict (7076) 2007-12-20 21:10
that is too low whooowhhh!! that seagull seem like competing the race. well timed capture. i remember my very first travel abroad was on AF.
pastadog (13111) 2007-12-28 13:15
Hi Asa, yes, I saw this amazing "sight" when visiting St Maarten, and your impressive shot catches it spectacular fashion... the bird there is a perfect bonus, cheers ;) Daniel
Koopman (1247) 2008-01-03 12:45
What a spectacular shot, well done and thank yoy for sharing,
jafadabret (56501) 2008-01-07 2:38
Asa, c'est une des photos des plus impressionnantes. La vie continue sur la plage alors que l'avion n'est qu'à quelques mètres du sol, j'imagine le bruit.
jemaflor (80806) 2008-01-07 10:31
Very good timing and perfect pov, impressive result, bravo ... i have, of course, during my holidays in St Martin island see this impressive view ;-))
carper (96) 2008-01-20 5:55
I had mis this fantastic capture of your.
it is a very good photo from that airport on the beache of Sint Maartem, good photo, I like it a lot, have a nice day.
Vasa (16736) 2008-01-20 15:44
normally this photo is one of my favorites. It is not useful to repeat all compliments. My admiration for this shot. I wont to contribute to your personal record: so two points and my smile.
Best regards from Belgrade
delkoo (68) 2008-01-31 4:31
i missed this one, it's very impressive to see this Airbus A340 so close of the people on the beach,
very well taken and Opportunist.
randompics (955) 2008-01-31 18:50
Wow this is the most incredible shot of an airplane I have ever seen. I just wonder how do the people manage to relax in that beach when the planes are flying inches over them. Your timing and composition is just perfect.
sebinho342 (19317) 2008-02-14 1:58
Hi Asa, eh eh i was sure to have seen already a picture of that place, it was yours !! I see it recently in jemaflor gallery with a more little plane, this one is so big and so french that i can't resist writing again few words on this shot :)
So "incongru" as we say in french, this is realyl an amazing place on earth, stunning picture
wojteczek (1148) 2008-02-18 8:28
Bird ans aeroplane. Great compostions:)
irfanat67 (223) 2008-02-22 21:02
When I looked at this picture, I thought the plan was going to crash. Amazing picture with an excellent moment.
magiqa (1292) 2008-02-28 3:09
Perfect landing photo, but so close to the umbrellas and the people on the beach! Very effectful photo, and you clicked exactly in the right moment!
amfdj (1986) 2008-03-20 4:50
This doesn't look the finest place to spend your vacation. But the photo you realized here is really great. Good timing and a god composition also.
cfreire (11739) 2008-03-26 4:46
This a wonderful shot very well captured in the exact moment. Colors and contrasts are beautiful and all the scenery, too. Good POV and framing. Well done. Regards, Consuelo
hispic (9619) 2008-04-02 2:55
Very famous scene, Airbus lands skimming the surface of the beach at Princess Juliana International Airport in Saint Martin
It's very funny that a seagull seems like to challenge the big bird to a race.
Have a nice day, Hisashi
tpstrek (2168) 2008-04-02 6:05
Good shot at the right moment, because of the race between the seagull and the plane. This situation reminds me of Kerkyra/Corfu in Greece were Pontikonisi or "mouse island" is visited very often. Here you'll be at the end/beginning of the airstrip; the difference is that the planes will be +/- 100 meters above your head.
jimkilgallon (0) 2008-04-03 15:29
This is a fantastic shot......... looks like something out of a movie. The good thing also about this image is the bird flying next to the plane, really well captured. One of the best shots ive seen on TE, nothing short of unusual.
lraew (42) 2008-04-06 10:22
Nice capture. You recently critiqued my fishing boat shot and I decided to check your gallery out. Very nice photo that certainly has color, clarity and an incredible balance bewteen the animate and inanimate. Would make for an interesting day at the beach. Seriously I do think the composition pulls in everything for perfect contrast refocusing the eye back to the plane!
Juntas (7958) 2008-05-07 16:07
Hi Asa. Some time ago, a friend sent me an email with several pictures of this beach but none of them had four wings; was it a race? who won it? That's an amazing photo. tfs. Paulo
Jean51 (24) 2008-05-13 12:07
pavelilioski (218) 2008-05-26 9:36
Very impressive close up! Incredible view of this plane landing right above the heads of the people... Great focus and composition. congratulations...
mark_mk (266) 2008-05-31 11:27
it must be an amazing moment seeing this plane landing and the picture is just great. The seagull is a great detail and all these people looking at the plane, great!
I really like that pciture, thanks for another favorite.
avene (12675) 2008-06-24 11:23
it's impossible to pass this shot without a comment :) I will not comment on technical or artistic aspects of the photo [the compression is way too high, the file is barely 56K instead of 200, and it shows; the sharpness could be better, and those two heads in the foreground remind me too much of a casual shapshot. the curve of the beach is great though, I like a lot how it leads the eye through the shot], but I'll be happy to add my 2 smileys for the timing and quick reaction - that's quite a decisive moment to have the bird flying the same direction as the plane. great work in capturing this.
sevy (15325) 2008-07-23 7:45
Not original from my side to commen this photo, but it is so incredible!
I am not sure I would have gone to this beach. Your photo by the framing is well placing the big plane in the environnement and the WS is providing the end of the story.
raszid62 (18583) 2008-07-28 8:15
Great Shot. I do not know how you made this, the picture of airplane near at hand over beach amazing. Congratulations.
francio64 (38264) 2008-07-29 6:06
this photo is very impressive!
Beautiful shot! Compliments!
A similar photo find you it in the gallery of RPoole5552

Incredible. Really trange. You get here a perfect capture.
It is fascinating.
Thanks for this post
Filko (1134) 2008-07-30 8:59
I want to go there next year just to sea the planes.
I checked the prizes, and everything... well, not so cheap, but I'll go there just to touch the planes ;-))
es841 (2113) 2008-07-31 13:34
corniste (4278) 2008-08-15 10:02
The shot is not perfect technically, but the effect is incredible... I can't beleave you got over 300 points for a single picture!
Have a great day!
ruisc_pt (10373) 2008-08-17 9:36
Nice shot Asa
Impressive height for a such a big bird.
Frightening shall I say.
fanni (14377) 2008-08-23 0:45
very very impressive shot... and very dangerous landing! (I wonder how can people (on the beach) get used to such a thing??)
With the latest air disaster in Spain this photo looks frightening... to remind us, perhaps, how valuable and fragile our life is!
pally3100 (3413) 2008-08-23 7:23
hello asa Jernigan
I am a fam of aviation since my young age , i have many photographies of planes militaries and civilians when i was a young boy i was often at the end of of landing road of Melsbroek become now zaventhem Bruxelles airport
and a day i be not able to go in my favorite place this day crashed a boeing 707 of Sabena belgian airline killing all passegers and farmer in this field where i often take place for taking photographies....
Your fantastic picture remembered me this old time.15 fev 1961
nota it is now impossible to take picture at this place because railways and ring of autoroutes are building there
nota in 25 may 2008 a B 747 crashed at the same place without burning and killing anybody...ouf friendly HC
mikele_pl (2400) 2008-08-25 8:21
quite a lot has been already said about this picture, so let me just add that it still manages to impress. Well done!
THAR (3870) 2008-09-01 7:34
Photo extraordinaire d'autant que le Goéland vole dans le même sens que l'airbus; peut être va t'il aussi se poser?
Herquin (7267) 2008-09-14 3:39
fantastic and very dangerous landing !!!
Have a sunny sunday .
Colombiana (2951) 2008-09-15 19:50
This is what I call "Great timing!"
It is impressive to see this airplane landing
so close above these people's heads.
AirFrace should pay you for this photo
and use it for advertising.
"Want a beach vacation? Just look up and AirFrance will take you there!" ;)
finlay (1549) 2008-10-09 0:32
Just an incredible picture. Impeccable timing.
tiagoalmeida (1475) 2008-10-09 12:04
nice shot but isn't it dangerous for people? i like your work very much
Jackos (3544) 2008-10-19 12:19
Wow! It looks a bit terrifying but it's very well captured moment. Well done.
kamphajm (111) 2008-10-21 13:13
Scary, isn't it? I saw several films of these landings on YouTube too. Unbelievable....
Funny to see that a seagull is competing with the aeroplane to see who gets there first!
josepmarin (57511) 2008-10-25 6:23
Simply impressive! This scene seems to be unreal, I already had seen photos as yours in presentations in PowerPoint, which are got for e-mail. And I like this one because here I can notice that it is an amazing and authentic image, and in addition, your WS shows us how there are people who amuses herself with the sand blast.
Excellent capture, very dynamics and managed well.
MLINES (12516) 2008-10-29 18:13
Hi Asa, This is very fun and a bit scary to see also. The noise must be really loud so close. Well timed and clear for such a fast moving target. TFS. Murray.
Felip (3907) 2008-11-09 10:13
Where does this bird think it goes? Landing in the beach?. I wouldn't like to be there...unless they would promise me all planes wear mufflers! Jokes apart, it's a very impressive shot, with a perfect timing!
Yves-triga (5149) 2008-11-09 12:04
C'est un endroit ou je rêve d'aller, voir ces avions attérir au bord de cette plage.
super belle vue.

Let's do that again, together !
Will add my version during next open window.
Kielia (22913) 2009-04-07 10:51
this is one of the most spectacular images here, it has deserved two points more, that is for sure. A great capture with a fantastic atmosphere, one can even hear the noise! Congratulation!
Vasylis (1410) 2009-04-11 11:01
I'm sort of envy on you ....that's one of my dreams ...to be there and take some shots with landing jets.
Incredible shot !!!
Probably it's a memorable moment.

jmdias (52706) 2009-06-13 8:07
very strange image, mixing the plane and the beach. I guess I wouldn't like to stay under the plane. haha. Very nice details like the bird flying, perfect sense of time to get this image in few seconds.
jjanczyk (2579) 2009-06-17 3:37
Woooow! That's something I really like - airplanes.
In a few days I will upload a few shots from Air Show in Paris.
An excellent view. The Airbus A340 looks amazing.
Stunning POV. I like that bird flying under the plane.
Have a nice time in Paris! The city has a special atmosphre, you will like it :)

Ahhh, yes ,the famed St-MArtin Airport-on-the-Beach :D
Very nicely captured, the contrast could be better (damn overcast) but superb timing and framing.
jackart (6700) 2009-09-05 5:21
It must be very relaxing place with sun sand sea and jets he he...
This shot deserve for its high note! Extraordinary scene very well captured!
ophelcia (0) 2009-10-26 1:45
I saw the landing at this airport somewhere on you tube:) I love the picture as I admire planes and I love flying:) I'd love to be there:)
maloutim (9627) 2009-11-23 18:55
This must be an incredible experience, somewhat frightening except for the people who are really used to it! And you captured the scene extremely well! Is that a sea bird in competition with the aircraft! Good shot!
I see no tourists are lying or going about their usual business! They are all on the alert. I suppose no matter how often one has experienced such a landing, it must always be quite something to see (and hear) every time!
Thanks for sharing, and have a good week!
Ricx (13495) 2010-02-07 6:47
No margin for error.. What an unbelieveable photo.. Extrememly well captured especially with the seagull.. ( Possible for inclusion into the theme " Spot the seagull) I like how you have kept in the people in the foreground to give the image further depth. Well done Rich
Rafer (14883) 2010-03-21 9:59
Impresionante momento muy bien compuesto con mucho color y mucho detalle como el del pájaro...saludos Mr. Asa.

I've seen a similar picture hundreds of times but it's always nice seeing another great capture. Really well done. Perhaps one day I will be one one of those AIR FRANCE planes.
Have a great week.

What a crazy airport!
This is unique picture .. you capture in the right moment ... the plane looks close with the beach
alfhwa (461) 2010-09-26 10:09
I'll just pile on to the already existing commments to say that this is an amazing shot. I'm not sure how fast these planes approach the beach, so kuddos that your shot was able to capture the entire plane. Nice job!
Mamont (144) 2010-10-21 12:52
Until I read your description, I also thought the picture was created in the Photoshop. Very nice and clear capture.

brech (189) 2010-12-29 9:41
What a dynamic capture with so much going on in this image. The landing of the Air France Airbus along with the seagull just above the beach and the people there make it a wonderfully exciting image.
Impressive - wish I could give you more than 2 points!
ingvar (2086) 2011-02-06 7:13
As many have already written - the picture is incredible! I share opinion of all, but the port authorities they must do something!
Did You send the photo to the airport?
It would be a good idea!
HFASSOURAKIS (4) 2011-02-06 7:21
THIS IS DOCUMENTARY PHOTO

EXCELLENT MOMENT AND LIGHT.
IT'S ABOUT THE SAME IN CORFU ISLAND, WITHOUT BEACH BUT WITH A WALKING STREET AND YOU JUST BEND YOUR HEAD DOWN NOT TO TOUCH THE WHEELS !!
VERY NICE PHOTO

fabianoleite (9371) 2011-10-22 9:49
Unbelievable. I can"t be that close, there must be a kind of optical illusion and it is farther than it appears to be. But anyway, impressive shot, and you also managed to have a good framing and a good composition. Good work, congratulations!

Noel_Byrne (20860) 2014-07-20 8:27
A big smile from me on this :) what an amazing sight this is, all of the holiday makers sitting there without a care in thE world, while this massive jet is just feet above them! I have to be honest, I was not aware of this place, and this is a fantastic way to learn of it.
Many thanks for sharing a very unique scene.
Ecureuil (506) 2014-07-24 10:42
je m'arrête sur cette photo qui est vraiment impressionnante. La prouesse de la prise de vue dépasse de loin la qualité technique de la photo.
Un post qui mérite franchement son succès.
mcmtanyel (10569) 2014-07-24 21:58
My son and I would have a heyday on this beach. I would not call myself a plane spotter, but he could be when he grows older (and independent). If i show him this photo, he would ask that we go to St. Martin next year. Lovely photo, even i am tempted to suggest we go there next year.

I couldnt imagine that you made this picture in the Netherland, but reading your note I remember that I have heard of this spectacular situation in the Caribian. In fact is St Maarten since 2010 not a part of the Netherlands, but a equal partner of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
