This is an Air France Airbus A340 landing at Princess Juliana Airport in St. Maarten, DWI. The photo was taken from the deck of the Sunset Beach Bar. It is a daily routine for visitors to St Martin/Maarten to stand on the beach and get sand blasted by jet blast (see Workshop).
The airport is famous for its short landing strip — only 2,180 metres/7,152 ft,[6] which is barely enough for heavy jets. Because of this, the planes approach the island flying extremely low, right over Maho Beach. Countless photos of large jets flying at 10--20 m/30-60 ft over relaxing tourists at the beach have been dismissed as photoshopped many times, but are nevertheless real. For this reason as well it has become a favorite for planespotters.

Hi Asa,
Very great shot, it4s very amazing. The plane seems to crash.
Olivier

Impressive shot. The plane makes the place much less idyllic!

Oh la la! I never seen somethinh like this before. The image is quite stunning. I can not imagine the noise and the jet blast there.
The pic is well composed, nice colors, a little quality problem due to resizing and sharpenning, perhaps.

Witaj Asa!
Curious shot! Good frame and colors. Very impressive picture. Good work.

I would like to go there just for the picture and nothing else. It must be very annoying to hear those big birds arriving or departing. I do not see the point of staying at the beach and listening to the noise and inhale the pollution. Well done.

Hi Asa,
Magnificent details in this amazing picture. I like the dove and how you captured the plain.
Good POV and sharpness.

Hi Asa,
This view is incredible! How can people be relaxed on the beach?!
It should be also a great experience for those who are inside the airplane!
Good shot!

Hi Asa,
It must be quite an experience. A340 with it's four engines is a beautiful plane. And the scene all in all quite surreal. The gull flying to same direction is a funny detail.
Kari

Hi Asa!

Very impressive close up! Incredible view of this plane landing right above the heads of the people. Great focus and composition. congratulations!

Best regards,

Hi Asa,

Hi Asa
Finally I see a photo of this beach with a plane that I believe is not "photoshopped". I could hardly believe the similar photos I saw before.
This is really amazing. I'd like to go there just to take pictures from the plane window, then pictures like yours, then go back home in the first flight. It's certainly impossible to relax with the noise and pollution.
Your picture has a great plus: the bird in same course of the plane.

Hi Asa, funny and interesting picture, with a really unusual landing...on the beach.
good quality, POV and funny view on the WS.
Thank, ciao

Hi Asa!
Finally the photo! It was very nice, impressive as the runway is short too for great airplanes as this! Interesting the comparison of the great bird of metal with the pigeon flying togheter, really the decisive momment!
Congratulations my friend!

Hi Asa,

That is almost beyond belief .. amazing capture .. everything is so sharp and crisp. .. both a flight and a beach I think I will avoid : )

take care,

John

Hello Asa, I like this image for the impactante that is and for the difficulty that it has to frame the plane and also with big definition.
it seems as if the plane was irritating few meters of the heads of the swimmers.
big work
a greeting.

"Grande" foto!
Bela captura num momento mais que decisivo...ótimos detalhes e cores, boa nitidez de imagem. Parabéns!

Me again :)
As i'm working at the airport, it is not a theme i comment on very often, you know, i'm here to relax, hehe ;) But this must be really something for the spotters, kind of one and only spot. And yes, i've seen some movies from this place, but here i really love the seagull apparently racing with the "bigger fellow". Great timing and quite enough sharpness on the plane.
Be well,
Mat

That is unbelievable and shocking! Great opportune moment you capture here. I don't like flying and would certainly be terrified that that plane would make the runway each time. I can understand the excitement on the beach though. Il check this out on you tube. Regards Steve.

Hello Asa,
A very interesting post. It looks dangerously low for the people on the beach. I wonder how loud the noise would be. Great notes to go with the posting. Regards. Latiff.

Hello Asa,
I saw this scene on television once, and it is amazing to see it again in your photo! It is both exciting and scary!! Great job capturing the plane at exactly the moment it flew over the beach. It is funny to have the seagull racing in at the same time, too!

Hello asa,
It is incredible to see the plane so low altitude just over the heads of people!. And your WS shows how close people are from planes.
I thin personnaly I would never go to this beach (even if I'm french as the plane is!!!).
Any way very funny the bird flying together with the plane. You were in the good timing.

Hi Asa,
as you say, this is a wellknown place there are hundreds of photographs of it. But always interesting to see and to make some comments to this one.
Probably it is difficult to get a good artistic picture: almost impossible to choose a preferred point of view, complicated background and much light. The interesting part is of course the strange conditions that those bathers have to bear during their short two-weeks-break after one year standing nonsenses of the boss.
I do not like on the other hand how the heads of the tourist intrude in the foreground. I have tried how the picture would be without them and does not work good because you loose a reference. Perhaps would be better to have see a part of the of them.
I like the seagull that seems to make a race against the plane to see who reaches first the end of the landing strip. It is known that for long distances planes are better than seagulls but the runway is very short and the seagull maybe has a chance this time.

That`s insane! Doesn't the wind rip out all of those beach umbrellas?

Hi Asa, this really is quite an incerdible photo and I can see why some people could mistake for one that has been photoshopped. It doesn't look like a great beach for putting a hat over your face and falling asleep, but it's a great picture nicely captured. I especially like the seagull that looks like its trying to mimick and race the plane!
Tom :)

Hi Asa,
I just checked your gallery and found this shot. It`s amazing, and very impressive. I read with interest your note and I can`t believe in my eyes. It`s incredible how low this plane is flying.
Very good picture
Thank you
Rossy

HI Asa
i knew that in St Martin the airport is kinda weird...placed in a strange way...
incredible image here..
thx for showing it to us..
regards

Amazing photo. I can't believe I never heard of this before. What makes it even more incredible is the seagull guiding the plane into land. You also seriously risked your camera being sandblasted. Well done
Kath

What a place to build a resort!!!??? Are these people mad?? The pilot would only have to get it wrong by an incredibly small margin and BOOM - disaster. Great shot - but not somewhere I'm ever going to visit!! Regards, Paul.

Wow, this is low over the beach, Asa, and I can understand why people would think a photograph like this has been photoshopped. I believe you that it has not because nearly everyone on the beach seems to be looking at the plane. The seagull seems to be racing the plane - an interesting detail. Cheers . . . David

This is just amazing! Looks dangerous too! Regards, Doug

Hi Asa,
Wow! Now that's really impressive and I don't think I'd enjoy spending a day on the beach here (well, I don't like beaches anyway). This is a great LATW (Learn Abouth The World) photo and it was a good idea to post it on TE. I love the detail of the gull flying by the plane.
Have a nice day.

Hi Asa - wow, this is an amazing sight. As you note, it almost looks fake, but guess its the reality. You've really captured the closeness to the beach on the plane's descent onto the runway, even including the water in the composition to show how close to the edge it is. Nicely done!

Asa, I've seen pictures of this airport before. I just find it amazing that the runway is so close to the beach. I want to say it's extremely poor planning on the part of St. Maarten but it may be necessary considering the size of some of these islands.

Great catch. Good timing. The photo is sharp with good color. I would have thought you would need a higher shutter to get the plane this sharp.

Great work.

Hello Asa, a classic but it's always impressive to look at. Technically good, great POV. Well done, thanks !

Mario

PS I also like the Gull trying to imitate the Airbus...;-)

Hi Asa,
Amazing shot. I had seen some other shot of the same spot, but I specially like yours for the oportunity of the gull just bellow the airbus. It looks as if on purpouse.

Hello Asa
What a disturbing place to spend noisy holidays.
Interesting subject and I think local people must complain for their sake; the place looks not safe in case of accident.
Cheers.

Hello Asa,
this is a very amazing shot.
You managed to capture the movement without any blur on both the jet or the people/background :-)
Very well done :-)

Hello Asa,
What a shot! Really unbelievable!
Despite difficult conditions you kept the good sharpenes!
Wel done!

Hi Asa
Stunning picture. One must be scared to death when he wakes up under the parasol with 300 tons of metal over his body. It must be quite a thrilling place to be, for an aviation fan...of course.

Pierre

Ola Asa fantastica foto , com o poder das turbinas do avião não neve ficar nada na praia , que momento incrivel !!!!
Gostei muito do WS
Parabens!!!!
Um abraço Gonçalo

Wow, what an impressive scene you show us here, Asa. It surprises me how the hell can this be a normal situation and happening all the time, everyday. It can't be healthy...or at least a relaxed place to be. I can see that you even got a seagull flying with the plane. I've never seen such a strong impact from those flying creatures. Well done and tfs.
Ricardo

This is amazing that this is the normal flight plan! You did well to fit the airplane, the beach and some other people all in the frame as well as a well exposed sky.

Like it has already been said, I would like to go there just to get this picture!!! A truely amazing photo..Brillaint!!

Hi Asa
This airbus is under good escort, for sure......or is it the exact opposite leading role!
Very spectacular juxtaposition!
Best regards.

Bonjour Asa,
Amicalement
Jean-Luc

Definitly impressive... It is what we can call a colateral effect about mass tourism :-))
I like the gull going the right way in parralel to the plane..
Good quality and very good moment for the shot.
I like it

Asa,
Unbelievable shot here. That guys ebery 5 minutes wake up whit those noise. Excellent decisive moment shot.

Hello Asa,

I happily join the chorus of admirers of the remarkable photograph. I though I had critiqued this photo before. It must be a freightening experience for beach dwellers for flight coming over so close. In Hong Kong, many years ago when the old airport was still functioning, was for the planes to fly between skyscrapers, for occupants of the buildings to look out from their offices and see the behemoths at the same level. The fleeting moment you've captured has a seagull, paralleling the plane.

Warm regards,

Bulent

Hi Asa,
this is indeed a rare picture taken just on the spot.

Hello Asa,
One couldnt imagine the roar of that beauty soaring, or for that matter searing overhead. Very impressive! You have incorporated many components to make this scene work out really well. The beach going bystanders who seem somewhat unfazed by the whole ordeal (mind you the two guys in the forefront I would like to have seen just a touch more of them in the picture).
Quite impressive, TFS this modern marvel of lunacy!
Brendon

Hi Asa,

incredible, I was talking with a friend of mine of this airport few days ago. He moved to St Marteen recently. If you don't mind, I would like to post this pict in the discussion forum...

You're shot is perfect. The plane is sharper than the rest of the pict and it shows its speed.

Cheers,

Loïc

Superb shot Asa. I bet they were really blown away by this on the beach;) I also like the seagull that is kind of saying 'Bring it on', ha, ha. Really good work.

San Maarten' Maho beach is THE ULTIMATE place for any aviation enthusiast, I wish I'll make it there someday.

Hi Asa,

Just a superb shot. I was in St-Marteen for a day on a cruise, but I did not see any planes that day. Well done on your part.

Regards - Paul

It's almost incredible. How can tourists quietly bath in this beach, when planes land so close to their bath towels ?
Noise and danger seem to argue for a closure of this beach. Surprising ! Nevertheless, excellent picture !

Hi Asa !

Impressive shot, really ! And the people can stand so close ?

Hey Asa,

Just go with the flow as the seagull imitates the jumbo jet! I'm an airplane fan, nothing amazes me seeing this shot! Carefull with all those sandblast, might get those sand particles in your sensor!

All the best!

Jom

This is a shot for Airliners.net! :-) Pretty low, that! A bit closer and it'd be enough to blast some of those tourists a whole end into the water...=)

Greetz,

Natalie

Hi Asa

must be pretty impressive for plane spotters, but as a holiday resort, it's not a destination i would go for. The pollution and noise and getting sand blasted at you, would not be ideal for a relaxing holiday. Great capture though, and quite funny that the gull is flying in the same direction too.

Derek

This is an incredible photography (and an incredible situation). This is an amazing shot! I like the way the bird flies as if he wanted to compete with the plane.
Great job!!

Hi Asa.
Even blind planespotters would have had luck here. Very interesting place, thank you for showing. Workshop photo is very informative too, little overexposed, I think you could adjust for that. I have tried to apply some corrections to it, works but being shrunk for TE it looses details. You could try having original of it. It is good addition to main post.
Chris
PS.I think this beach could serve well to relieve some gastric problems, like obstruction, it would work for me. ;-)

Hello Asa
Oh my God! The plane is so close from the ground! Excellent point of view on this huge plan. What a spot for the ones who like planes. Thanks for sharing. Well done.

Hello Asa. A landing airplane, beach with people, sea gull. Fantastically. You photographed in the correct moment. Really impressing. Very beautifully. Best regards, Wolfgang.

Hi Asa,
Fantastic capture. Perfect timmig. I would like to take something similar some day here in Manila, but the closenest of the plane with gound can only be achieved here.

Hi Asa, yes, I saw this amazing "sight" when visiting St Maarten, and your impressive shot catches it spectacular fashion... the bird there is a perfect bonus, cheers ;) Daniel

Hi Asa,
What a spectacular shot, well done and thank yoy for sharing,

Asa, c'est une des photos des plus impressionnantes. La vie continue sur la plage alors que l'avion n'est qu'à quelques mètres du sol, j'imagine le bruit.

hi asa
i missed this one, it's very impressive to see this Airbus A340 so close of the people on the beach,

very well taken and Opportunist.

Hello Asa,

Very impressive view! It must not be very confortable for the tourists on the beach!

Kind regards - Franco

Wow this is the most incredible shot of an airplane I have ever seen. I just wonder how do the people manage to relax in that beach when the planes are flying inches over them. Your timing and composition is just perfect.

Hi Asa, eh eh i was sure to have seen already a picture of that place, it was yours !! I see it recently in jemaflor gallery with a more little plane, this one is so big and so french that i can't resist writing again few words on this shot :)
So "incongru" as we say in french, this is realyl an amazing place on earth, stunning picture

Bird ans aeroplane. Great compostions:)

When I looked at this picture, I thought the plan was going to crash. Amazing picture with an excellent moment.

TFS, Asa.

Perfect landing photo, but so close to the umbrellas and the people on the beach! Very effectful photo, and you clicked exactly in the right moment!

Hi Asa
This a wonderful shot very well captured in the exact moment. Colors and contrasts are beautiful and all the scenery, too. Good POV and framing. Well done. Regards, Consuelo

Hi Asa,
Very famous scene, Airbus lands skimming the surface of the beach at Princess Juliana International Airport in Saint Martin
It's very funny that a seagull seems like to challenge the big bird to a race.
Have a nice day, Hisashi

Hi Asa,
Good shot at the right moment, because of the race between the seagull and the plane. This situation reminds me of Kerkyra/Corfu in Greece were Pontikonisi or "mouse island" is visited very often. Here you'll be at the end/beginning of the airstrip; the difference is that the planes will be +/- 100 meters above your head.
TFS,
Henri

Wow Asa

This is a fantastic shot......... looks like something out of a movie. The good thing also about this image is the bird flying next to the plane, really well captured. One of the best shots ive seen on TE, nothing short of unusual.

Jim

Nice capture. You recently critiqued my fishing boat shot and I decided to check your gallery out. Very nice photo that certainly has color, clarity and an incredible balance bewteen the animate and inanimate. Would make for an interesting day at the beach. Seriously I do think the composition pulls in everything for perfect contrast refocusing the eye back to the plane!
