Photographer’s Note
This article is about the recording artist. Bob Dylan Robert Allen Zimmerman (Shabtai Zisel ben Avraham v'Rachel Riva) was born on May 24, 1941, in Duluth, Minnesota, and raised there and in Hibbing, Minnesota, on the Mesabi Iron Range northwest of Lake Superior. His grandparents were Jewish emigrants from present-day Turkey and Russia. In his 2004 autobiography, Chronicles, he wrote that his paternal grandmother's maiden name was Kirghiz and her family originated from Istanbul, although she grew up in the Kağızman district of Kars in Eastern Turkey. His paternal grandfather was from Trabzon on the Black Sea coast of Turkey. His paternal grandparents sailed from Trabzon to the Black Sea port of Odessa in Ukraine from where they took off to immigrate to America. His parents, Abraham Zimmerman and Beatrice "Beatty" Stone were both Jewish, and their family was part of the area's small but close-knit Jewish community. Zimmerman lived in Duluth until age seven. When his father was stricken with polio, the family returned to nearby Hibbing, where Zimmerman spent the rest of his childhood Abraham was recalled by one of Bob's childhood friends as strict and unwelcoming, whereas his mother was remembered as warm and friendly.
Bob Dylan is a Grammy, Golden Globe and Academy Award-winning American singer-songwriter, author, musician, and poet who has been a major figure in popular music for five decades. Much of Dylan's most notable work dates from the 1960s, when he became an informal documentarian and reluctant figurehead of American unrest. Some of his songs, such as "Blowin' in the Wind" and "The Times They Are a-Changin'",[1] became anthems of the anti-war and civil rights movements. His most recent studio album, Modern Times, released on August 29, 2006, entered the U.S. album charts at #1, making him, at age 65, the oldest living person to top those charts.
Dylan's early lyrics incorporated politics, social commentary, philosophy and literary influences, defying existing pop music conventions and appealing widely to the counterculture of the time. While expanding and personalizing musical styles, he has shown steadfast devotion to many traditions of American song, from folk and country/blues to rock and roll and rockabilly, to English, Scottish and Irish folk music, even jazz, swing, Broadway, hard rock and gospel.
Dylan performs with the guitar, keyboard and harmonica. Backed by a changing lineup of musicians, he has toured steadily since the late 1980s on what has been dubbed the "Never Ending Tour". He has also performed alongside other major artists, such as Willie Nelson, Paul Simon, The Grateful Dead, Tom Petty, Stevie Nicks, Bruce Springsteen, U2, The Rolling Stones, Patti Smith, Jack White, Merle Haggard, Neil Young, Johnny Cash, Van Morrison, George Harrison, Ringo Starr and Eric Clapton. Although his accomplishments as a performer and recording artist have been central to his career, his songwriting is generally regarded to be his greatest contribution.
His career accomplishments include the Polar Music Prize, the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, Kennedy Center Honors, and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Nashville Songwriters and Songwriters Hall of Fame. Dylan was listed as one of TIME Magazine's 100 most influential people of the 20th century. In 2004, Bob Dylan was ranked #2 in Rolling Stone Magazine's 100 Greatest Artists of All Time, second to The Beatles. He has also been nominated several times for the Nobel Prize in Literature. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
yes somebody I adore when I was young. Over the photo. this one I took on iso 400, and I use a monopod by the shot. I hope you like Dylan too, have a nice weekend.

Good name for a boat. Well timed waiting for the sun to just appearfrom the cloud. A slight pity that the roof equipment is lost in the trees.

Hallo Jaap!
Besides the great note your picture is amazing too. The mood of the light in this one dominates the whole scenery. The bright cloud where sunrays come from gives an a bit mystic atmosphere here. The ripples of the water surface give a good contrast to the blue sky.
Greetings from rainy Germany - and have a nice weekend!

And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a haard, it's a hard, it's a haaaaard raaaaaiiiinnnn...who's gonna faaallll. Hi Jaap, long time no see. Just had a good time going through your note and also through some good souvenirs (namely a Bob Dylan concert to which I attended, where I got the impression, at a moment, he had fallen asleep on the scene. I guess you used some sort of HDR technique in your photograph. I'm not particularly a fan of the effect colour and tonality wise. The choice of crop is judicious though, well composed.

Olá Jaap, beautiful tribute to Dylan. Another excellent composition with an amazing sky and magical rays of sunlight coming out from those clouds. A strong foreground that is not in the dark, in spite of the light conditions and the capture against the sun. The dramatic result is fantastic. Congratulations, once more!

Hallo Jaap,

Very nice photo here, Jaap. The framing with the boat quietly resting by the waterside is well made, but I'm not telling you any surprising thing when I say that I think the lightburst effect of the sun behind the cloud is the key asset of this photo - rendering a special atmosphere and giving a good example how photography is very much about the use of light, and about being lucky to be at the right place at the right time in order to catch what you managed here.

Hello Jaap,
An excellent photo taken under difficult lighting conditions. Your photo is secondary compared to your fascinating commentary about Bob Dylan. You brought out some biographical infomation about Dylan that I was unaware of. I remember the 1960's well and Bob Dylan was a big part of it. I admire hime for still composing and touring. Your commentaries are always interesting and well written.

Hi Jaap,
WOW! An impressive informative note on Bob Dylan, I suppose that in relation with the name of the boat that appears in your photo.
An excellent photo, of course, with the sunbeams that go out behind the clouds, in a mystical image, and with a lighting and a few fantastic colors.
Yes, I love Dylan, from my youth, and it continues impressing me and thrilling his excellent musical work.

Dag, Jaap. Moeilijk om zo'n foto te maken met tegenlicht en een witte boot voorop. Ik denk dat je je hier zeer goed redt met het licht. Er is een goed evenwicht tussen donkere en lichtere zones. Hello Jaap -
The master of Dutch skies has produced a winner again. I really like the sun rays escaping the clouds in this image. The rays against the blue is the image here. There is just enough FG light to provide nice detail in the boat. Exposure, etc, etc, are spot on. Well done!

Hello Jaap,
For the son of a tugboat captain, this must be a compelling shot for the boat, but the package of the boat, the exquisite Dutch sky, the sunburst effect — all ingredients that the artist would consider ideal. Indeed, you have given us a magnificent landscape painting. Have a wonderful, restful weekend,

Hello Jaap,
