This is the Nobelpoort gateway to the town of Zierikzee. Zierikzee is the only town on the Netherlands to still have three gateways from the middle ages- they are "De Nobelpoort", "De Zuidhavenpoort" and the "Noordhavenpoort".
The Nobelpoort shown here is the oldest of the three and is on the northern side of Zierikzee. It was built from the 14th century. The gateways were built in the middle ages to protect the city, and the towers are so high beacuse it was still during the time of bows and arrows, later when canons came about it was no longer necessary to build such high towers. You can see that the Nobelpoort is the oldest of the three gates because of the type of stone and the bricklaying technique used.
The name Nobel comes from two ladies of nobility. The one was richer than the other. The richer one wanted the tower with 16 edges and the other wanted eight, that is why there are two different towers at this gate. Another story goes that one of the ladies walked with a limp and that is why one of the towers was built slightly crooked.
The original wooden gates are still there and also on the other two gates. In those days if the wooden gates would have been rammed through there would be heavy metal gates behind them lowered down with spikes. Until 1866 the gates were locked at night. When the gates were built they were measured on hay wagons and not on trucks therefore trucks are too big to enter the town.

Hello Wanda,
Beautiful photo of "De Nobelpoort" with nice green colors already for the end (?) of April. The flowering trees are a definate plus here adding more color to the photo. Well composed with nice reflections. Well done.

Hi Wanda,
Beautiful composition and almost impresive with the amazing reflection in the water.Nice and peaceful atmosphere with so nice natural colors all around!
Best wishes,
Thomas

Dear Wanda,
You have a lot of vertical frames in your gallery. You are from a photography school and so the grammar of a vertical portrait type frame are very well maintained in your compositions.

Vertical top pointed structures represent victory, dignity or strength. One such award winning black and white photo in the past was Flatiron.

If you compare you will notice that your upload has maintained all the basic elements of that "old is gold" shot and something extra is your strong foreground with reflection.

Best wishes
Dr. J

Hi Wanda,

This one is picture postcard Wanda. Superbly viewed and composed and very well conceptualised. the muted lights and pastel colours make it mystical and magical. I love the tones and textures that you have captured perfetcly. The reflections are great too in the small water body and an extremyly useful note as well. Great work.

Hi Wanda,
wonderful amusing note about the two wealthy ladies. I like this one as you did it in a simple and impressive way. The POV is very pleasant with the reflection and the tree is a great frame. The light and exposure is excellent. Where the colours in April so intensive?
Lieben Gruss, Ulf

this is like a scene from a fairytale... great architecture... a well composed superb shot... colour palette is magical... congrats wanda...

korkut:)

beautiful composition.great colors, magic atmosphere .well done
anes

Taking a few paces to the left so that the top of the reflected tower was visible would have improved this, but you would probably have ended up in the canal! Still, might have been worth getting your feet wet.
Never mind, it's a great shot as it is; the composition is well balanced and the soft, low-angled light has rewarded you with subdued but attractive colours.
Good one Wanda.

Cheers,
Ben

groet jaap

Hi Wanda,
Wonderful capture of this scenic and romantic view, much reminiscent of medieval tales. TI like the towers balanced by the tree, the "verticality" of the pov, somehow enhanced by the reflections on the water.
The little construction on the water puzzles me a bit: what is it exactly? A miniature of some building?
Regards, José.

Hi Wanda!

This is definitely one of your best pictures, so far! Great composition, perfect vertical framing, excellent reflection and beautiful colours. Nothing "missing" here. Congratulations!

Hi Wanda,

Hello Wanda,
this shot is like a fairy-tale! Very well captured and greatly framed in an elegant vertical format. The reflections are very nice, such as the colours are. The atmosphere is calm and peaceful and the willow-tree included adds a lot of beauty to the shot.
Very nice work! Tfs and have a nice day!

Hello Wanda
a fairy tale castle in a sense.
A photo well contructed in a portrait way that fits well with the vertical lines of the tree and the castle. The river makes a fine diagonal that takes our eyes to the castle.
Sadly,a noisy sky probably due to an increase in the global saturation.Try to work the saturation separately for each colors, this way you will get a berter results.
Hope you had a good WE
Charles

Hi Wanda, this is beautiful, even if sky color is strange you got so many color everywhere in this compo, the must here is for sure this gateway and its almost full reflexion.
Great !

Hi Wanda,

Bonjour Wanda,
Un endroit magnifiquement cadré, a part le format cela me fait penser aux clichés de notre ami carper,très agréable a regarder.
Amitiés Joseph

Hi Wanda,

Beautiful image, the composition is perfect, I like the light of the scene of the average part downwards, has one tones and textures very well balanced, the zone of the sky displeases a little to me, it is slightly sobreexposed and with excess of noise, but it can be corrected before taking the photography or later but of one more a more complicated form. Anyway a good work, I imagine the place and must of being fantastic. Thanks to share.

Regards
José

Great shot, Wanda. A fairy tale tower with a dreamy reflection. The little miniature castle (?) in the foreground adds further detail & interest to your photo. Good work.
