Photographer’s Note
Queen's Birthday of 1995 in Amsterdam. Here we were: my friend who lives in Germany and yours truly, walking along one of the canals in the middle of the "most liberal" city on the planet. Suddenly, I noticed a group of strangely happy individuals smiling like a "KoolAid" man for no apparent reason (or so I thought).
Upon a closer inspection, I discovered that the source of their smiles and happiness originated from this little "Pot Stand".
Since Holland is a "metric" state - the marijuana was sold by kilos (!) and fractions thereof to anyone willing and able to smoke it. Cops did not pay any attention whatsoever! Besides, they looked way too happy by my estimation.
Later (and that was my first visit to Amsterdam), I stumbled upon dozens of such "pot stands" around the city. Obviously, that's the way they celebrate royal birthdays: a bottle of Amstel, french fries with mayo and a fat joint right of off a stand...
