Photographer’s Note

This underpass is part of Rotterdam subway station Beurs and connects the two parts of the partly underground shopping mall the ‘Koopgoot’ . While leaving the basement level of a department store we saw that the underpass was almost empty – a very rare occasion in this busy station. So my love offered her shoulder to steady the camera and I took this 1/8 sec shot.
This underpass is part of the Erasmus North-South subway line. Because of restrictions in size and the location, modern subway-station design specifications such as high ceilings and daylight openings in the roof couldn’t be used. To still give the passers-by and the passenger a safe and “not caged in feeling”, the massive pillars carrying the Coolsingel above (the main thoroughfare which bisects the Koopgoot) were clad with lighting ornaments, small lights were fitted in the polished floor and the ceiling was fitted with reflective materials. Considering the father who takes the time to play with his child in this shot, these measures work well.

PS-E2 tech: skewed, cropped, levels, parts of the picture lightened with the dodge brush, saturation (master and greens & blues) boosted, sharpened (the whole pic and parts with the sharpen brush), frame layer added and saved for the web.
