Something went wrong with the sharpness, so please, visit this version.

The last couple of days, we had snow in Haarlem, just like the rest of the Netherland. We had quite a heavy snowstorm yesterday, but today, the snow is melting and the roof my house is leaking a bit.

This street is called Kerstraat (Churchstreet) in the centre of Haarlem. The building you see in the background is the back of the Nieuwe Kerk (New Church), which was built between 1645 and 1649 in Dutch Renaissance style.

The tower of the church, which is not visible here, is designed by Lieven de Key, who designed a lot of buildings in Haarlem in the 17th century. You can see the roman numbers if you look carefully.

The church is called "New Church", because it replaced the older former St. Anna church on the same location. It was the first church was special built for for protestant services.

About the photo: I cropped the tower of the church, because it was overexposed and the sky was very way too white.

This is what I did:
-rotating: 1 degree
-cropping, especially from the top
-contrasts: +3
-saturation: +5 and +15
-blue: -15
-red: +7
-resizing
-sharpness: + 40%
I am not satiesfied with the sharpness though, but if you sharpen the photo more, the snow gets grainy. And after I resized and posted the photo, the problem with the sharpness became even worse, so please take a look to the better ws-version (with higer top)

Hoi Stef

Hi Steft,
Nice picture. The snowy atmosphere is great and I like the sunny church and the two persons walking on the street.

Dag Stef,

prettig eindejaar,

Luc.

Hi Stef,
Although the WS is sharper and displays more of the building, this is still a very worthy shot and more intimate with the walking couple. I like the mood here and the dusting of snow on the bushes. The fine details of the interesting architecture are well seen. Best wishes for the coming New Year to you and your family, Stef.

Witaj Stef!
Your photo is nicely. I like the colours and light. Good composition and frame. Wonderful place.
Happy New Year!!!
Krzysztof

Hi Stef. I think I see what you are referring to but I wouldn’t sweat it too much. You've got good contrast between the shadows area and the areas in the light. The people bring the shot up a notch or two. Nice one and Happy New year Stef!

Hi Stef, nice way to end the year with this nice tight cropping, nice mood and good point of view into the small alley. Best wishes for 2006, happy shooting !

Stef this photo is very captivating. I love the lighting at the end of the walkway. Including the human element is very nice too. Excellent details throughout! A fine capture!

Bonsoir Stef,
Philippe

Hi Stef, Nice picture to show the cheerful light snow under the sunlight. A nice catch.

Hi Stef,
nice view, interesting a small street, I feel here the Xmas and New Year atmosphere. Good composition and colours. I like it.
Best wishes in New Year!

Hi Steft,
This is a lovely small street in contrast to a big church. Well seen. I don't mind softer sharpnes. Atmosphere is very pleasant.

Thanks,
Marek

Hoi Stef,
Uw jaar is excellent begonnen.
John.

These people in front of the great facade are very well in the frame. A very natural catch for this situation in this beautiful street.
I like it
jean Michel

Hi Stef,
Very nice capture of the alley, with great perspective and depth. The people add life and work fine inside the frame. Very well done!

Best wishes for 2006
Regards John

Bert

Hoi Stef,
You captured a nice wintermood.Good perspective towards to the church, the pedestrians add life and scale.
Greetings,
Hermann

Hi Stef,
Happy New Year! Nice winter picture and a nice compressed perspective and composition with the narrow street creating a nice depth and leading the eye towards the church. nice light and colours. Well done!

Hej Stefan,
Groetjes,
Lars

Hi Stef, funny that you post the two versions. In fact the soft one is not bad at all. Sharpness is such a funny thing. There are times and photos when it is necessary and others where it is better to go for softness. In the first post the light becomes the most interesting element, in the workshop it is the street below that draws immediate attention.

Tjena Stef,
//Magnus

There is much to admire in this scene. The couple are walking towards the light (symbolic as the light is on the church) There are some lovely architectural details and even the steam from someone's central heating.
The sharpness doesn't worry me at all. I think what happened as you cropped the top, you still went with the maximum size allowed and in effect stretched the image and reduced clarity. (the uncropped photo is actually smaller overall)

the other version you posted is indeed much better than this. not only because of the sharpness issue, but the frieze on the tower, combined with the green in the top left corner provide a wonderful border. the composition on that one is much better while the contrast between the huge church and the little houses -which caught my eye here- remains intact.

i'd certainly have given a 2 point happy face to that version if that were possible.
