History

Historie
Rond 1850 werden de duinen ontgraven voor de waterwinning. Hiervoor werd het duingebied nog beschouwd als ‘woeste grond’.
De duinen werden gebruikt voor de teelt, de jacht en hielden de zee tegen. Verder hielden de mensen zich niet op in het duingebied.
In de loop van de jaren kwam het inzicht, dat natuurbeheer meer is dan alleen het keurig onderhouden van het waterwingebied. Natuurbeheer stelt de bronnen van waterwinning veilig. Er bestaat een wisselwerking tussen waterwinning en natuurbeheer.
Waterwinning heeft ervoor gezorgd dat de Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen behouden zijn gebleven. Dankzij de waterwinning konden andere aanspraken op het gebied, bijvoorbeeld de aanleg van een weg, worden afgewend.
In 1990 werd vastgelegd dat Waterleidingbedrijf Amsterdam het natuurbeheer als tweede hoofdtaak heeft, naast de eerste hoofdtaak waterwinning.
