Photographer’s Note
Underpass II (Subway St XII)
The underpass between the Wilhelminaplein subway station in Rotterdam and its Wilhelminapier / New Luxor exit is displayed here. This subway station was realised to serve as public transport hub for the Kop van Zuid quarter. In 1996 it was added to the all ready existing north-south ‘Erasmus’ subway line. The exit and underpass was opened some months ago.
As said in the note of the first Underpass picture modern subway-station design applies high ceilings, spaciousness and daylight openings in the roof to give the commuters/passenger a safe and “not caged in feeling”. And, as in the case of the Beurs station, this wasn’t possible here due to the fact that it’s tunnel passing under another major thoroughfare, the Posthumalaan leading to south ramp of the Erasmus bridge, aka De Zwaan. The south ramp is on the right of Lars’ picture. The solution applied here is again almost textbook. The square lines of the box formed tunnel are considerably softened by the gentle curves of the partly perforated metal cladding which are backlit by colored light sources. The moving sidewalk is lit from within too.

Great shot Bert!
I like it alot. This one is going into my Themes of Escalators and Travelators. Good symmetry, lines and detail. The people in the shot add a nice human touch.
Nice job!

Hallo Bert! When I first saw this underpass 'in real' a couple of months ago, I was pleasantly surprised. I like the light and the curved walls and ceilings a lot. I think you caught the design of this passage very well in the picture. Nice symmetrical composition with a useful inclusion of the people. Both to give an idea of the size, but also to draw us into the picture, is if we are stepping on the moving sidewalk and following the other people to the horizon.

salut Bert,

Great interior from the subway station, Bert. The symmetrical framing works of course ideally on this one, enhancing the ultra-deep perspective. I also like the ochre color tones and the sort of butterfly shape of the tunnel. Fine handling of the exposure for this one.

Hej Bert,
Groetjes, inmiddels weer uit Kopenhagen, ;-)

Wow, what a perspective, Bert! Very strong as id you are sucked into the tunnel. And yes , of course it reminds me of a few other shots on TE, but especially Isabel’s one. The shining tunnel is beautiful and really seems endless. I like the pink and the red reflection, and I’m glad that there are some people in the shot.
Have a good week!

Hallo Bert,

Good symmetrical capture Bert. You used the shapes of the tunnel perfectly. They engage the viewer drawing the eye all the way to the origin which seems so far away. Yet despite it seeming so far away one has the feeling of reaching it in a moment as if this were some kind of warp. As if we reach the end while thinking we are still at the beginning. It's the softness of the lines that aids in that feeling for me. The new subway stations are impressive places. I was just checking some photos of Napoli's stations the other day. And though I definitely prefer them there is something nostalgic about the old "cages" of old systems like New York or Boston. A grimy grittiness that suits the smell of grease and the screeching of the wheels.

Heee Bert,
Very good catch here,
Looking in the thumbnail I thought it was a metro/subway tunnel
I like the perfect symmetry the crop and the almost monotone color here
The side light makes it for me
Well seen

Bonjour Bert
Je note ici une bonne perspective qui donne une profondeur à la composition.
La symétrie est très intéressante dans ce cas.
L'exposition en mode manuel traduit une bonne maîtrise de la pratique photo.

The symmetry here is pefect. I like how you captured the movement of the people away from you and that really can'y see where they're going.

The symmetry is almost perfect. Deep ambience. Well done.

Hi Bert
Wow - quite a view you present here - I like the fine symmetry and the presence of people to give the true perspective - too bad we didn't have time to visit this place as well.
