Photographer’s Note
I took that image many years ago, in the April 1988, during my first
visit to Amsterdam.
We travelled by train from Milano, and just outside the Main Station
of Amsterdam there are that Australian guys that played "And the Band
Played Waltzing Matilda" a famous Pogues song.
When I was a young man I carried my pack
And I lived the free life of a rover
From the murrays green basin to the dusty outback
I waltzed my matilda all over
Then in nineteen fifteen my country said son
It's time to stop rambling 'cause there's work to be
Done
So they gave me a tin hat and they gave me a gun
And they sent me away to the war
And the band played waltzing matilda
As we sailed away from the quay
And amidst all the tears and the shouts and the
Cheers
We sailed off to gallipoli
How well I remember that terrible day
the blood stained the sand and the water
And how in that hell that they called suvla bay
We were butchered like lambs at the slaughter
Johnny turk he was ready, he primed himself well
He us with bullets, he rained us with
Shells
And in five minutes flat he'd blown us all to hell
Nearly blew us right back to australia
But the band played waltzing matilda
As we stopped to bury our slain
And we buried ours and the turks buried theirs
Then started all over again
Now those
In mad world of blood, death and fire
And for weeks I kept myself alive
Then a big turkish shell knocked me arse over tit
And when I woke up in my hospital bed
And saw what it had done, I wished I was
Dead
Never knew there were worse things than dying
no more I'll go waltzing matilda
the green far and near
For to hump tent and pegs, a man needs two legs
No more waltzing matilda for me
So they collected the cripples, the wounded
Maimed
And they shipped us back home to australia
, the blind insane
Those proud wounded heroes of suvla
And as our ship pulled into circular quay
I looked at the place where legs used to be
And thank christ there was nobody waiting for me
To grieve and to mourn and to pity
And the band played waltzing matilda
As they carried us down the gangway
But nobody cheered, they just stood and stared
turned all their faces away...

I think your photographic skills have improved a whole lot since 1988 ;-) Not too excited about this image to be honest, a simple shot taken standing infront of the band, a shot that anyone can take, but I see, especially given the note, why it maybe important pic for you.
IMO the frame doesn't help either.
Peter
PS, I remember this station very well, this is where some of my luggage including hunderds of pictures were stolen.

Ciao Paolo,
You captured very well the freedom atmosphere of Amsterdam. In this cosmopolitan city we can see art or anything more. Good shot, I like it.
Have a nice weekend!

Ciao Paolo,
Indeed something different then your normal precise and high definition work, but in this image there's already somebody who has someting to say. I like the joy and concentration in these buskers and hey, ....anything concerning the Pogues shouldn't be perfect and clean cut. It just wouldn't be fitting ;-)
Thanx for sharing your memories with us and for including these punchy lyrics too.
Regards from Rotterdam,
Bert

Hi Paolo,
I think that the details and expressions of the band are very well captured, but I dont think this is the best POV to take it, I think taking a couple of steps backa and a few to the left would have a better view of the whole band less centered and with a nice backround on the right of them.
Cheers

Hi Paolo,
By posting this shot your have shown the essence of a photograph. It might not be technically perfect but the feeling and emotion that goes with it is more important than all the others. That is why we carry some in our wallet. Thanks for the lovely note that comes with it. Excellent!!! Best regards.

Paolo,
I come from the Netherlands, and during that time I also played in a band, and sometimes on the street like this, so it brings back the nicest of memories. I also traveled with my back pack (photo's are still in storage) . . . .
deep sight.
