Sint Jan, Den Bosch

Last week I showed you de Sint Jan in Maastricht, today I show you another Sint Jan, but this time in the city of Den Bosch in Noord-Brabant.

Den Bosch or more official called 's Hertogenbosch (means literally The Woods of the Duke) is the capital of the province of Noord-Brabant. It is located 80km south-east of Amsterdam and has about 135,000 citizens.
Henrik I, Duke of Brabant granted Den Bosch city rights in 1185.

The most famous landmark of Den Bosch is de Sint Janskathedraal (Saint John's Cathedral), also very well known in the rest of The Netherlands (so I was very surprised I couldn't find other pictures of it on TE). De Sint Jan dates from around 1220 and was in those days a Romanesque church. The present Gothic church was completed in 1525. The tower was destroyed in 1584 an 1830 in a fire. From 1858 to 1985 the cathedral has been under renovation almost permanently.

I took this picture today, when it was "real Dutch weather", as we call it: clouds, some sun and some rain.
Hope you like it!
